It remains a foregone conclusion that Mitt Romney is going to be the Republican Presidential nominee. The only problem is, the polls suggest something else, and there is no evidence to suggest any degree of momentum or support rallying the former Massachusetts governor.
What the polls show, increasingly, is that Newt Gingrich is solidifying his position as the anti-Romney, and in the last week, 3 national polls have come out showing that the former Georgia Congressman and Speaker of the House holds a 2-5 point lead in national Republican primary polls.
More specifically though, Gingrich is leading in a couple of Iowa polls, and in at least one New Hampshire poll has polled within a couple of points of Romney.
To be sure, most of the New Hampshire data shows Romney with a substantial lead, but New Hampshire would be the only state where Romney enjoys anything approaching a comfortable margin. And indeed, if the Iowa numbers which show Gingrich in the lead were to hold true on Caucus day, January 3rd, almost certainly it would provide momentum for Gingrich that would make New Hampshire competitive.
The South Carolina surveys show a commanding 14-15 point lead for Gingrich, and Florida is close to a statistical tie between Romney and Gingrich.
Moreover, Gingrich has recently positioned himself as a Tea Party conservative, and hence the alternative to Romney. But also, Gingrich is a fairly original thinker. He is somebody who improbably enough might even be able to get back toward the center on at least some issues in a general election against President Obama.
By speaking about the urgency of immigration reform, Gingrich took a position in the debate Tuesday night which can only benefit him going forward, should he be the nominee, recognizing the absurdity

I don’t vote based on a candidate for his ability to strategize well; I choose the candidate whose values and political views most closely match mine.
What is your obsession with Newt’s sex life?
And Herman Cain’s public record is.....?
Can you tell us what he said that changed your mind? In his debate remarks on 11/22 he advocated:
control the border
guest worker program
review board
deportation in specific cases
very severe penalties for employers
Which of these positions do you consider deal-breaking? If you would like to see a transcript of his complete remarks, it's on my homepage.
Gingrich’s position is clearly stated on his website, www.newt.org.
He does not sanction voting rights for illegals, nor any process that would grant them voting rights.
New immigrant citizens are another matter, do you want to end legal immigration?
By the way, Gingrich also has said that schools should teach American history and make students familiar with our founding principles. He wants English to be our official language and he wants newcomers to learn it. If all that went into effect, perhaps newcomers would not vote Democratic in such numbers.
In any event, he is offering solutions.
Gee, most would call that flip-flopping. I think you Newt amnesty deniers need to purchase some Deport cologne for him. It's a fragrance that covers up the amnesty or open borders scent from RINOs.

I think it is perfectly fine for people to post positive articles on their favorite candidate, but I (like you) am getting sick and tired of these constant spamming and slamming threads.
We get enough of that from left-wing media....we sure as hell don't need it from our "FRiends".
Well said!
Glad it worked for you.
Try to stick to the truth; that wasn't.
I will blame my head cold for the sentence structure garbling in that last comment that I posted.
We have them now. Had one for Mexicans during the Eisenhower years -- you remember Eisenhower, the one who's lionized on FR for that mass deportation known as "Operation Wetback." In the same administration, the guest worker program doubled its numbers to almost half a million. (Search "Bracero Program.") "Wetback" deported about a million. And they did it without computers and biometrics. I think we can match that ratio or better. Why don't you think it would work?
No real surprise. CNN is a big dem/lib network conservatives rarely watch. Though I am surprised that you would imagine that the few democrats who watch their network would be of any help to Newt.
Cut off the funds with a note saying "You Can Appeal..." giving them an address and a document checklist. I think they will beat a path to the govt office door. Don't you?
I read it.
He does not sanction voting rights for illegals, nor any process that would grant them voting rights.
He doesn't say a thing about how he would deal with those illegals that are voting. His focus is on deporting "dangerous" or "gang" illegals. I consider voter fraud extremely dangerous to this country. There is nothing about deporting illegals draining the treasury by using Medical, Medicaid, SSI, etc.
New immigrant citizens are another matter, do you want to end legal immigration?
Of course not, I'm all for legal immigration.
By the way, Gingrich also has said that schools should teach American history and make students familiar with our founding principles. He wants English to be our official language and he wants newcomers to learn it. If all that went into effect, perhaps newcomers would not vote Democratic in such numbers.
All good ideas.
In any event, he is offering solutions.
His solutions are fairly good for any newcomers, but it's still amnesty for those illegals that are already here.
Not saying, of course, if that govt door would be on American property, or on the Mexican Embassy...
I think a lot of independents and moderate Republicans watch CNN.
You are smart as well as lucky, Lady. (;
Herman Cain has a staunch Conservative view on issues that have literally been ignored by most politicians for decades, like the problem of illegal immigration which Cain takes serious. He also has an impressive education, and history of turning around a failing business, and making it a success. Does anyone really think Obama wouldn't have bankrupt that company immediately if given the same responsibility?
Herman Cain is a Conservative Republican outsider, and that's what most of the Conservative TEA party wanted in candidates, and now we have one and should capitalize on it by nominating him. At the very least it would send a message to the liberal media, and establishment Republicans that they don't have the power they once had, and their attacks can't stop Conservatives from winning the nomination. Herman Cain is the best choice for the Presidency in 2012 by far, and I hope to GOD he pulls out this primary victory. He's the best candidate on paper I've seen in my lifetime based on his staunch Conservative views, and the fact he isn't controlled by the out of touch establishment. He would be the first candidate since Eisenhower to take illegal immigration serious which has to be done for the survival of our nation.
