Hispanic Activists Urge GOP To Follow Gingrich's Lead On Immigration

Hispanic Activists Urge GOP To Follow Gingrich's Lead On Immigration Newt Gingrich's call for 'humane' approach to migrants earns plaudits from Latino voters – but propels the former speaker into an increasingly hostile debate within the Republican party

Ed Pilkington 23 November

Newt Gingrich's appeal for a "humane" approach to US immigration in the latest televised debate has propelled him into the thick of one of the most bitterly divisive issues within the Republican party, at the same time earning him plaudits from Hispanic activists battling against new legal clampdowns sweeping across the southern states.

Latino groups in Alabama and Arizona, where some of the harshest anti-immigration laws have been passed in recent months, welcomed Gingrich's comments as a sign, they said, of a changing tone in the debate. In Alabama, where police officers are under instruction to round up anyone they suspect of being undocumented, campaigners embraced his call for a new attitude.

"It's about time that we moved away from extremism and take up, as he said, a more human approach," said Gwendolyn Ferreti, a researcher on immigration who has been campaigning against Alabama's new law, HB56.

Until recently, the prevailing view among the Republican leadership was that a way had to be found to bring up to 12 million undocumented Latinos in the US into the legal fold. Both for economic reasons, to ensure a supply of cheap labour, and for reasons of political self-interest given the growing size of the Hispanic electorate, a compromise had to be reached.

This is exactly why I don’t want Gingrich to be the Republican nominee. We meed someone like Bachmann or Santorum, solid conservatives who get it and understand what we face. The last thing America needs is another RINO in the White House.

“Activists’’ my ass. They’re paid agents of the Mexican government agitating on behalf of their own selfish interests and intent on shipping their poor and under class here as a source of foreign capital— sending back billions in remittances, money taken directly from our economy. Bloody racist parasites. It’s infuriating watching and listening to these invaders violate our laws with impunity and a pugnacious pride and at the same time demand not only the protection of the law but they seek to prevent their being applied and enforced in our own country. It’s a veritable act of war.

Just the knowledge that Alabama intends to enforce immigration law in the future has sent illegal aliens packing.

Alabama reaps huge rewards from immigration enforcement bill

I'm surprised that you don't remember that all the illegal aliens that Reagan granted amnesty to in 1986, immediately registered to be life long Republicans.

It really works! Grant amnesty and and all Hispanics will vote Republican FOREVER! Legal, illegal, just visiting - BAM - new Republican voters.

Newt, since when is enforcement of existing laws inhuman ?

You’re a great expositor Newt, I’d love to hear the reasoning behind your implication that other Republican’s advocacy of enforcing the law is inhuman.

I hope this is not race politics, I thought that was more popular with the left.

First I want an ironclad clause that anyone who enters the US illegally will be permanently barred from citizenship and voting. I also want laws prohibiting people who have entered the US illegally to be permanently barred from using our social services, including using any amount of Social Security beyond the exact dollar amount they pay in. I want rigidly enforced laws that deport anyone who has entered the US illegally and breaks other laws, including traffic laws. I want anyone who employs illegals to be prosecuted, fined, jailed and made to forfeit property involved in the commission of the crime.

Is Newt serious? Nope.

But, all of this is for naught. Newt would never seal our borders, and therefore, nothing else he is proposing will ever be done. SOP.

Newt's pandering won't work. Hispanics will still vote Dem. Latino Voting in 2010 Partisanship, Immigration Policy, and the Tea Party

What is remarkable about the Latino vote for U.S. Senate in 2010 is how consistent it was with past results. It remained within a historically steady range, largely independent of the idiosyncrasies and personalities in particular campaigns. This stability reinforces the idea that the Latino vote is stable and predictable, guided mainly by party loyalty, shaped by the variable level of turnout from contest-to-contest, but mostly unmoved by issue appeals and campaign themes. In the following pages, I will lay out more evidence of this invariance, in addition to what I have written in previous CIS reports.

This Backgrounder makes three straightforward points. First, gains for Republicans as the result of Latino support in the 2010 election were, at best, modest. The gains were more notable in some races than in others, but overall the results remained consistent with historical patterns, in spite of the impressive gains made by the GOP among other voters. Latino voters, like other voters, continue to be driven primarily by party identification when they cast their ballots. Swing voting is not dramatic, though inter-election fluctuations in enthusiasm and turnout are more notable.

Second, whatever gains Republicans did make among Latinos had little to do with immigration policy, or policy positions taken for or against more generous immigration. To be sure, the recruitment of Latino Republican candidates helped marginally, as Hispanics, like other ethnic voters, often use surname cues to guide their vote when they are otherwise undecided. However, a fundamental lesson from this election is that Republicans can gain vote share among Latinos not by taking dramatically different positions on immigration policy, but when they recruit credible Hispanic candidates to run for major offices.

Finally, Hispanic voters were largely oblivious to the Tea Party movement during 2010, with a large share expressing no opinion about these myriad local groups and their issues. Overall, support for Republicans in locations with high Tea Party activity was neither higher nor lower than for Republicans in other locations. Their mixed reaction appears to correspond to research suggesting that Latinos were not particularly enthusiastic about going to the polls in 2010, with turnout running below 2006 levels (Lopez 2010a).

Unfortunately for all Republican candiates, Newt’s position of pandering to the Hispanic voting block has been made public and will influence the discourse from here on out.

The Hispanic voting block can’t help now but to compare and contrast other Republican candidate’s with Newt’s stated position.

This will wind up making it more difficult for any Republican to win the general election, since it will amplify an Obama talking point.

WHEN WILL THE ESTABLISHMENT LEARN that tacking towards your opponent is NEVER a winning strategy in elections.

It is foolish to claim that your opponent’s biggest strength in attracting their own voting base - is also your strength. It merely makes you look like a watered-down version of them.

Republicans need to attack that issue from a completely different angle - once people are in America and working - the more other people who come into the job market, the more competition they have against them for their own job.

From that perspective - even illegal aliens working here would not want MORE illegal aliens coming in.

America needs jobs, not workers.

Big business leaders who are stupid love cheap labor - so they love the idea of an enormous oversupply of workers - and having workers pay slashed to nothing. They have no clue about quality, to them it’s just a joke. But big business has gotten behind every candidate who wants to open the floodgates for cheap labor.

You are absolutely correct. We have been importing poverty and cheap labor that depresses wages and takes jobs away from Americans. There are an estimated 8 million illegal aliens holding jobs, 7 million in non-agricultural jobs. Is it any wonder why the black unemployment rate is 16% and Hispanics 11.3%?

Milton Friedman said that, “You cannot simultaneously have free immigration and a welfare state.” We have both. 57% of immigrant (legal and illegal) headed households with children use at least one major welfare program. We are importing poverty and hundreds of thousands of high school dropouts every year through our kinship system of immigration.

You can be certain they already have begun getting their ducks in a row....so what! We can fight this thru to the finish can we not?

By the time those who are eligable to remain as "legal" has been determined... the vast majority of them will have left under Newt's plan....and the border will be secured...and employeers will not risk hiring any for fear of the stiff penalties in place. So how many are actually going to be "legal" by then? Further more, the issue of any who are "legal" risking deportation if they do attempt to seek the aclu's help likely won't do so if they want to remain here

Seems to me there's something which could be established even preventing groups from making these demands for citizenship of the ones left....time will tell but it certainly is being looked at already.
