Hispanic Activists Urge GOP To Follow Gingrich's Lead On Immigration

Hispanic Activists Urge GOP To Follow Gingrich's Lead On Immigration Newt Gingrich's call for 'humane' approach to migrants earns plaudits from Latino voters – but propels the former speaker into an increasingly hostile debate within the Republican party

Ed Pilkington 23 November

Newt Gingrich's appeal for a "humane" approach to US immigration in the latest televised debate has propelled him into the thick of one of the most bitterly divisive issues within the Republican party, at the same time earning him plaudits from Hispanic activists battling against new legal clampdowns sweeping across the southern states.

Latino groups in Alabama and Arizona, where some of the harshest anti-immigration laws have been passed in recent months, welcomed Gingrich's comments as a sign, they said, of a changing tone in the debate. In Alabama, where police officers are under instruction to round up anyone they suspect of being undocumented, campaigners embraced his call for a new attitude.

"It's about time that we moved away from extremism and take up, as he said, a more human approach," said Gwendolyn Ferreti, a researcher on immigration who has been campaigning against Alabama's new law, HB56.

Until recently, the prevailing view among the Republican leadership was that a way had to be found to bring up to 12 million undocumented Latinos in the US into the legal fold. Both for economic reasons, to ensure a supply of cheap labour, and for reasons of political self-interest given the growing size of the Hispanic electorate, a compromise had to be reached.

We should tell our welfare folks that they would have a better life in Mexico if it weren’t for their inhuman immigration laws. They need to start huge demonstration to pressure Mexico to change its ways so they can come in with no skills at all and get a lot of free stuff. Get the UN on their case. That will scare them.

Why do Mexicans abandon their families to stay in US?

I know Mexico sucks, but I am hoping that they will believe that is is paradise so we can get rid of them just like Mexico is sending us their dregs. I figure we should at least try to balance some of that out.

Many people are praising him for being so smart but the Mr. Hyde side of smart is crafty. Gingrich is just another super slick, crafty politician and we should not fall for this. I started out with Bachmann and after considering all of the others, I am going back to Bachmann. She was pro-borders when being pro-borders wasn’t cool.

As soon as we do it, the ACLU will sue for voting rights.

You can be certain they already have begun getting their ducks in a row....so what! We can fight this thru to the finish can we not?

By the time those who are eligable to remain as "legal" has been determined... the vast majority of them will have left under Newt's plan....and the border will be secured...and employeers will not risk hiring any for fear of the stiff penalties in place. So how many are actually going to be "legal" by then? Further more, the issue of any who are "legal" risking deportation if they do attempt to seek the aclu's help likely won't do so if they want to remain here

Seems to me there's something which could be established even preventing groups from making these demands for citizenship of the ones left....time will tell but it certainly is being looked at already.

Lol, into the river first, huh?

I don’t post much on illegal threads much but I see more and more posts lately that show understanding of the complexity of it all. Someone living in Ohio is apt to think they know exactly how to fix it, snicker.

You need a tough CiC and tough people in Congress to deal with Mexico

Mexico has a much lower unemployment rate right now - than our (non-farm) 9.1% rate

Between Congress being exempt from insider trading laws (Congress made 25% in the last 2 years as honest voters tanked or went barackrupt) and being chummy with pro-illegals lobbyists we are importing new radical Obama voters and future voters daily and selling out America at Barack Friday prices

IKE knew how to deal with real problemos - and he did it fast

Reciprocal laws with Mexico - or move the border South

[Reciprocal laws with Mexico - or move the border South]

Neither of those will happen. Mexico is a country at war within its own borders and overlaping into ours. People are being killed at a huge rate down there, they find mass graves, caves full of bodies, etc.

We have to get the border closed, but I don’t forsee much else happening. I don’t recall all that Ike did, need to look it up.

Operation Wetback - IKE

I did some reading up on Operation Wetback and the numbers are all over the place. This was in the mid 1950’s, long ago. FactCheck, [an Annenberg site] had more figures than other sites and states that emails sent out citing so many millions deported were inflated;

Eisenhower did not deport 13 million Mexicans as emails claimed. Only one-tenth that number was ever claimed by the federal officials in charge of “Operation Wetback,” and even that figure is criticized as inflated by guesswork. Officially, just over 2.1 million were recorded as having been deported or having departed under threat of deportation.

That was a good start. Now we have many millions more.

Nappy, Holder, and Obama are always claiming they are deporting more than GW Bush did

But the now announced the policy of not deporting any illegals unless they have committed a major violent felony

That is a joke

It is amnesty without going to Congress

Obama intends to explode the vote of illegal aliens in 2012

Otherwise they would not be suing all those states for passing ID and other laws

Newt’s “legalizing” BS is bogus - and he and the ACLU know it - Many illegals have a box full of aliases and IDs - Swapping first and last names around here is common - using cousins names is too - using the names of dead uncles is another popular trick

Let’s face it - many first, middle, and surnames of hispanics is common - so the game the system
Obama knows how to do that too

[Nappy, Holder, and Obama are always claiming they are deporting more than GW Bush did]

And, as you say, they counter that with restrictions on deportations. They’ve done it to Texas too.

[Obama intends to explode the vote of illegal aliens in 2012]

Remember we said that before mid-term elections too and yet managed to do overwhelmingly good. Texas had a huge win on Republicans, and everyone claims we have so many illegals.

[ Many illegals have a box full of aliases and IDs]

Perhaps many overall, but that may be overblown too since we pay attention to the stories that come out about it and there are no stories about ones who are just working.

Every day in the newspaper you see a pretty Mexican girl and a white boy getting married, or a white girl and nice looking Mexican boy. I guess Texas has always been like that and we are used to it.
