How Eisenhower Solved Illegal Border Crossings from Mexico
The Christian Science Monitor ^ | July 6, 2006 | John Dillin

Posted on 11/27/2011 4:46:13 AM PST by BarnacleCenturion

Fifty-three years ago, when newly elected Dwight Eisenhower moved into the White House, America's southern frontier was as porous as a spaghetti sieve. As many as 3 million illegal migrants had walked and waded northward over a period of several years for jobs in California, Arizona, Texas, and points beyond.

President Eisenhower cut off this illegal traffic. He did it quickly and decisively with only 1,075 United States Border Patrol agents – less than one-tenth of today's force. The operation is still highly praised among veterans of the Border Patrol.

Although there is little to no record of this operation in Ike's official papers, one piece of historic evidence indicates how he felt. In 1951, Ike wrote a letter to Sen. William Fulbright (D) of Arkansas. The senator had just proposed that a special commission be created by Congress to examine unethical conduct by government officials who accepted gifts and favors in exchange for special treatment of private individuals.

General Eisenhower, who was gearing up for his run for the presidency, said "Amen" to Senator Fulbright's proposal. He then quoted a report in The New York Times, highlighting one paragraph that said: "The rise in illegal border-crossing by Mexican 'wetbacks' to a current rate of more than 1,000,000 cases a year has been accompanied by a curious relaxation in ethical standards extending all the way from the farmer-exploiters of this contraband labor to the highest levels of the Federal Government."

If it were a goal of an administration it would be done. Every time they are threatened, illegals self-deport. Deport a few and the rest will beat them to the border. I like the unpleasant boat rides of Ike too.

Sorry, newt. Your compassion kills our sovereignty.

A very good rationale to stop this practice is also slavery. We spent so many years in this country developing a free underclass as well as decent conditions for workers. Illegals work with no protections, are often “owned” by their coyotes or patrons, and don’t enjoy much freedom. Both sides of the aisle should be almost as ashamed of us using these people as of actual slavery.

Cesar Chavez was a bracero ‘community organizer. He hated, HATED, illegals because they took jobs from the LEGAL BRACEROS.

1-Close the border.
2-Accept PROVEN 20-25 years here, PROVEN, (and that will be darned difficult) illegals for “worker but unable to vote” status.
3-Make hiring an illegal, ILLEGAL with stiff penalty up to AND including loss (forfeiture) of business.
4-Make the punishment for any illegal caught after a date certain, forfeiture or all assets and deportation forever.
5-Same for any illegal breaking a felony after a date certain.

Good point. And what are the unions saying today about illegal immigration?

Other things that bring the US and Mexico together are oil and water. We could use their oil even though we have our own, and they need the water that flows from our rivers. We also can use fruits and veggies during the winter months from Mexico. We are very much neighbors on this connected land and it is in both our interests as people that we have safe and sound governments for ourselves.

I justify war against Mexico to take them over and start them fresh in that much of what their criminal citizens and corrupt government officals do to the US are acts of war. I’m not looking for a bloodbath war but a justification to use full military force to change that country and stop the acts of war against the US.

Just remember: I'm bookmarking this thread for the next time you repeat the lie that getting illegals to self-deport is economically impossible. I have proof that you have been notified otherwise.

I despise shills.

The New York Times can write about Mexican "wetbacks," and the Eisenhower administration can run "Operation Wetback," but Chuck Schumer thinks that John Roberts should be disqualified from sitting on the Supreme Court because he once used the word "amigo" in a memo.

The whole “do you support a fence or don't support a fence” talk amongst our R candidates is a diversion in my opinion.

The border could be shut within a week if we wanted to; with no fence.
Yes a fence is probably a good tactical thing to do in some smaller areas.
But it's not needed the whole way by any means.

The will to control the border is what is needed; and is what is missing.

My wife and I have several apartments in Compton. Compton has been overrun with illegals. We have for example one family of five, that's two adults and three children. They are illegal. And they have been here for nine years and do not speak coherent English. My wife is Mexican and was born in this country. She speaks fluent Spanish

She also seems to have taken the side of the illegals in that she speaks out against me when I explain that these Mexicans are dragging the whole country down

One problem we face is that noone will live in our building who is not Mexican. So that excludes Blacks, and anyone else. Still the pathway is clear and my wife knows it. The illegals MUST go and my wife despite her protests knows that. That's ALL illegals.

I remind her that we are Americans and that we have an obligation to drop a dime on these people in spite of the economic hardship it may cause us. Stay tuned.

Maybe you think they mean a literal physical barrier. I think the question is a euphemism for a more forceful approach to securing of the border. When you hear someone say Illegals will use taller ladders, you are listening to someone that will always find a reason securing the border is not possible.

And I agree with you, we do not need to literally fence the entire border. Drones are amazing versatile little critters.

Hello Nathan. I’m having trouble today getting on FR - don’t know why, so I’m unable to send you replies to the thread we were both on last night.

I found this one which I can access, and it is interesting.

I’ve known about Eisenhower’s actions, as President, in uprooting and deporting illegal aliens. There is a good reason why the 1950s experienced stability and prosperity - people could find jobs, somthing difficult today. But most all, it was a time when enforcing laws meant something.

This article says everything I wanted to tell you.

“Maybe you think they mean a literal physical barrier.”

Yes I believe some of them were saying this; a actual physical fence the whole way. That is what made me cynical. The ones saying that are just posturing in my opinion; they know it would probably never happen.
And by proposing one; they are not serious for that reason.

A serious proposal to close the border would involve getting the right people in place and would happen very fast.
I honestly am skeptical that any of them would really actually seal the border.
They will say the right things in debates and other formats; but if elected would they actually do it?

In 1954 you are right the GIs were back and many, like my old man needed jobs; Operation Wetback was put in place to fix a problem that had been 15+ years in the making from a loose socialist inspired immigration policy. Can you say Roosevelt and Truman?
