The UK is to expel all Iranian diplomats following the storming of its embassy in Tehran, Foreign Secretary William Hague has announced.

He said he had ordered the immediate closure of the Iranian embassy in London.

Tuesday's attack by hundreds of protesters followed Britain's decision to impose further sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme.

Iran's parliament had previously voted to reduce diplomatic ties with the UK.

Mr Hague said there had been "some degree of regime consent" in the attacks.

He said all UK diplomatic staff in Tehran had been evacuated and the embassy closed.

So, there were no Brits taken captive after all?
If so, that’s great news.

Pity the UK didn’t seize the Iranian embassy workers. Arrange a hostage swap.

Its hilarious how the US media is avoiding this story - they're obviously worried about comparisons to Carter.

I only heard about it via yesterday's talk shows.

Some embassy staff had been trapped for a while, some sympathetic Iranian police helped them escape. All are accounted for and safe now.

Guess the "let's be friends" diplomacy doesn't work in the Middle East.

Diplomatic activity like this, yes, in the past has tended to indicate impending attacks. If it steps up, particularly if some neutral nations in Iran who have embassy or consular services in Teheran start emptying them out, or sending non-essentials and family members home with no explanation, you will know something is up. I watch what the Japan Foreign Ministry does, but if it indicated something was immenent to me, I could keep it to myself and would certainly not post it here in open forum where Iranian intelligence or their friends could lurk. The element of surprise is going to be very important, not that they would not be monitoring the foreign embassies themselves though. This latest twist with UK-Iran, and the explosions, makes it get very interesting. Especially for the month of December.

About time. The United States has done fine without any direct diplomatic relations with this crowd. Glad to see the UK trying it.

It seems to me that the situation in Iran for the leadership is getting so precarious that they feel the need for an outside bogieman to distract and unify the Persians.

This could result in a regional war so fast...

I think some element of the police, and some element of their regular military could for sure be flipped in our favor. Many cannot STAND the mullahs or their President. The elite forces would be a hard nut to crack, though, they are sworn to suicide to protect the Islamic Republic.
