At a campaign stop in Des Moines, Iowa Thursday, GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said children in poor neighborhoods have "no habits of working," no one around them works and they get cash illegally.

Classic Newt. He is a smart man with some brilliant ideas, but he doesn’t think before he speaks and stuff like this comes out. I understand what he meant by the comment but the way he said it was stupid. He does this over and over and over. He did it in the 90s. He did it in the 2000s and he’s doing it now.

Guess what, Newton, THERE ARE NO JOBS IN THE HELLHOLES IN WHICH THOSE KIDS LIVE.

And a lot of the jobs that used to be available have been taken over by illegals.

There is some level of truth in Newt's statement, but it is far too sweeping a generalization, and has the added burden of a bad economy and Newt's past lack of support for measures to combat illegal immigrants taking lower-tier jobs.

If these places are such hellholes with no jobs, what’s to stop the residents from saving up a few bucks for a bus ticket to a place with a job or two?

The illegal aliens have all those jobs.

We have a winner! That is the REAL reason behind what Newt rants about - too bad Newt himself is too phony to get it. Under his immigration plan, the illegals who work those jobs would never be deported, and the teen unemployment disaster would continue, and worsen.

A good piece on how illegals are taking the jobs U.S. teens used to do here:

Two words: Welfare Checks

Newt just agreed to build a double wide border fence.

Actually there would be a lot less criminality among the poor if we weren’t so restricted by laws that are designed to create revenue for federal, state, and local bureaucracies.

Hell I “broke the law” when I built my porch without a permit and I “break the law” every time I make under the table cash. I broke the law for several years when I worked full time on a farm for cash.

I’m a poor person who will continue to break the law because its the only way to come out a little bit ahead.

I think his point might be, that current government policies have destroyed whatever jobs or opportunities might exist in those places.

In the 1950's black teens were employed in wage paying jobs (as opposed to paper routes or shoveling snow) at higher rates than white teens. Black kids hustled and did whatever kind of work they could find. The "Great Society" has been an unmitigated disaster (is there any other kind?) for the black community.

No, Newt is not responsible.

Those who do not - and will not - work are responsible.

Oh, sure, there are circumstances which raise kids to not work, circumstances where jobs are hard to come by, etc. ... but it still comes down to “he who shall not work, neither shall he eat.”

I’ve known of a permanent bedridden chronic convalescent operating a, um, successful pharmaceutical distribution operation out of his gurney.
I’ve known healthy bright capable young adults who were given every d@mn opportunity to succeed and just sat there doing nothing, wondering why they fail.

If you live in a he11hole, either create your own job (yes, you can d@mn near anywhere), or MOVE to where one is (yes, you can move).

YOU are responsible for YOU. A complete stranger living in another state is NOT.

A couple grand in moving expenses by the time you figure in rental and utility deposits? That, and places with a job or two are in pretty short supply - unless you're talking about picking up and moving to Asia.

I agree! Not 100% of them but a vast majority. My brother in law is a stay at home “artist” and has never worked a day in his life. His son is 21 and neither has he. He majors in french in a college that his grandmother pays for.

Our newspaper recently had an article featuring a woman who has lived in section 8 housing for 40 years! They celebrate her as a “woman of dignity”! AND they bragged that she raised 3 generations of kids in that free house! Think any of them work?! Other than the street corner?!

And in poor neighborhoods, nobody drives in the snow, nobody mows their lawns, nobody reads newspapers, nobody fishes and nobody golfs.

Good point - or picks up garbage.

Gingrich said they don't have "habits of working". That means having good work habits and a work ethic. Arguing that they don't have that because they don't have jobs means you started from the premise that it's their employer's repsonsibility to teach them that. It ain't.

Look, YOU KNOW Democrat cities are just big donuts with nothing but agony and devastation in the middle. I suppose every now and then there is one that manages to get out. I know a couple. But it ain’t easy, esp when they accuse one another of abandoning their culture etc. I know one guy WHOSE GRANDMOTHER CRIED when he said he was going to law school and wouldn’t be a tattoo artist any longer.

Listen, these people have been wrecked, they can’t think straight and they have no God to rely on. Because the Democrats have delegitimized God in every way they can, and there is no religious instruction anymore and one is regarded as a FREAK if you have standards. So Freepers going “uh they are lazy, we were so much better”, guess what, when you were growing up, we still had our country. No one walked on the flag, no one said “Happy Holidays” there was still Easter vacation.

Now, nothing is sacred except people’s “right” to sexual gratification, which makes me want to throw up.

Welfare, food stamps, drug dealing, and theft make them a good living right where they are. It's not a job problem, it's a culture problem.

I cut grass for money as soon as I could push a lawn mower. By high school, I had income from several small businesses. Even my first car produced a profit by having a rider that paid for the ride to school.

Most kids now are too busy with other things to work. I have looked for a young person to handle several small jobs for us around the yard. No luck.

Why is he responsible? Democrats and their urban planning policies have destroyed the family and the neighborhood. Just look at all the urban hellholes in this country and look at who runs them. Whatever happened to accountability? Aren’t city councils responsible?

on what lawn, what golf course, what fishing hole? These poor kids are living in a concrete maze with parents who are children themselves.

Ever seen “Blind Side”? sheesh.
what a bunch of self righteous fools. The social programs (ineffectual and foolishly administered) are not what is breaking the economy.

The poor are too easy a target. The real target is the corruption in government and the feeding at the public trough by these insidious rip off artists, and the graft.
