Aside from its football program, I know very little about Virginia Tech. It's a state-run university, right? If so, am I correct in presuming that it's a typical ultra-liberal government institution?
No, they don't. Please remember that Newt Gingrich was a big supporter of the Criminal Safezones Act which prevents armed citizens from defending themselves in certain arbitrary locations.
I prefer a more common sense approach: There are already guns on campus. All too often they are illegal, Republican Gov. Rick Perry said. I want there to be legal guns on campus
Disclaimer: Perry's statement is not in response to today's shooting. It's always been his stance.
It was just on the radio here in virginia.
No reports yet on cop’s condition; just saw a report of a possible second victim.
Sorry about that. I had several windows open from different news sources. Here is one that mentions it:

Depends on the department. The Liberal Arts tend liberal, but the school is known for its Engineering, Agriculture, Vet Science, and Business/Architecture programs (not to mention an excellent ROTC program), which are not known as liberal hotbeds...
Police officer dead
Twitter is reporting, one police officer dead and another victim wounded. Everything is on lock-down. They may have the suspect in custody just now.
Why not? There’s a sign over the main campus entrance that reads: “Gun Free Zone! Come in and Bag Your Fill!”

Person outside performing arts building surrendered with hands up. yfrog.com/mnvumoj
Otherwise I hope they catch the perp and blame her/him only.
Now they are saying at least two dead..and the person who surrendered might NOT be the shooter
Per WDBJ: two confirmed dead. Shooter still not located.
My exact thought.
What is it with that campus?
UPDATED 1:50 p.m.: This is a statement from Virginia Tech.
“Shortly after 12 p.m. today, a Virginia Tech Police officer stopped a vehicle on campus during a routine traffic stop in the Coliseum parking lot near McComas Hall
During the traffic stop. the officer was shot and killed. There were witnesses to this shooting.
Witnesses reported to police the shooter fled on foot heading toward the Cage, a parking lot near Duck Pond Drive. At that parking lot, a second person was found. That person is also deceased.
Several law enforcement agencies have responded to assist. Virginia State police has been requested to take lead in the investigation
Status of the shooter is unknown. The campus community should continue to shelter in place and visitors should not come to campus.”
Classes ended yesterday, which is a very good thing. No suspect in custody as of yet. Tech officials are planning a press conference.
UPDATED 2:18 p.m.: Montgomery County Schools are on a lockdown right now.
Sad stuff.
Maybe the criminal used one of Eric Holder’s “Fast and Furious” gins! That would at least perhaps be some positive aspect of this.
