8 weeks to the Florida GOP Primary, Newt Gingrich resoundingly defeats Mitt Romney, with no other candidates worth discussing, according to a SurveyUSA poll of 500 likely Republican primary voters conducted for WFLA-TV in Tampa.

Gingrich gets 45%, Romney 23%, no one else is above 6%.

* Among those who describe themselves as moderate, Romney leads 3:2. * Among those who tell SurveyUSA they are "very conservative," Gingrich leads 3:1. * Among Evangelicals, Gingrich leads 5:2. * Among members of the Tea Party, Gingrich leads 5:2. * Among pro-life voters, Gingrich leads 5:2. * Gingrich leads by 20 or more points in every region of the state except Southeast Florida, where Romney runs 3 points ahead of Gingrich. * Gingrich's Favorability among likely Florida primary voters is now an extraordinary Plus 54. * Romney's Favorability among likely Florida primary voters is now Plus 30. * By contrast, and as a point of differentiation, Ron Paul's favorability is Minus 11, Rick Perry's favorability is Minus 9.

Anticipating that by the time the Florida primary is held, after Iowa, after New Hampshire, and after South Carolina, that some 2nd-tier candidates may have dropped out of the race, SurveyUSA asked likely primary voters who they would vote for if the only two remaining candidates, at the time of the Florida primary, were Gingrich and Romney.

In a two-man face-off, Gingrich defeats Romney 57% to 30%.

Lots of old people in Florida. Old people that remember when we had a great country (pre-1992).

I think at least some of them are, but I suspect most of them are the annoying followers of Ron Paul.

It will be such a breath of fresh air in 2016 not to have Ron Paul and his rabid followers mucking up the process and rendering most straw polls meaningless.

Gingrich - 45%
Romney - 23%
Undecided - 9%
A conservative - 8%

This does not bode well for America. The Republican Party is no longer the conservative party.

It is becoming clear that the posters on here dumping on Newt day after day are not what they claim they are, and may be agents for other interests trying to sabotage his candidacy.

I am one! Yep. No to immoral Newt. Conservatives are definitely changing their minds on social issues by supporting Newt. I guess the moderate Republicans are thrilled. I am not. Bachmann/Sanotrum is the only ticket that is 100 percent conservative!!!!!!

Gingrich is a person to whom it would hard to be committed on a simple emotional level, but there are a lot of people on FR who are looking for exactly that: somebody they’d want to go to church with, go to a movie with, eat dinner with, etc. or see as a standard bearer for all of their personal positions.

Unfortunately, no such candidate exists. You have to pick the one with whom you agree on most points (even if you don’t agree on the exact specifics of his approach) and who you think has the most possibility of being effective on carrying them out.

The minor candidates are minor for a reason. I thought Perry might be good, but he’s too inarticulate; we’ve already had that once with GWB, an excellent president in many ways and very conservative at heart, but somebody who couldn’t explain anything to a hostile audience and ended up backing down on his initial correct impulses just to appease his critics.

I wasn’t sure about Gingrich at first, but now I’m pretty certain that he could stand up to the attacks. I’m also pretty certain that I’d feel good about working for him (since I usually work everything from phone trees to headquarters set-up on campaigns).

I worked for GWB, although I knew his weaknesses (he was great when he addressed a friendly audience, useless when he had to speak to the rest of the world, just like Perry). After McCain chose Palin, I worked on that campaign, although with some embarrassment. Everybody I called said, ok, I’ll vote for him, but only because the alternative is unthinkable. Unfortunately, that wasn’t convincing to enough people...

But I think I could even be enthusiastic about working for Gingrich, not because I think he’s anybody I want to meet or anybody I care about personally, but because I like his ideas and I think he could achieve them. I hope.

Well, Gingrich and Obama are a good ego match for one another, but Gingrich still loses on personal popularity.

I'm not sure what's more amazing to me, that Republicans are prepared to make Newt Gingrich their 'conservative' standard bearer (if Gingrich is a conservative, than so is Romney), or that they'll do so knowing that Obama will win if they do. If this is just about not settling this time, and going over the cliff with the conservative flag flying, why not just go with Bachmann, or Santorum, who are clearly more conservative? Gingrich is neither conservative nor electable in my estimation. If you want a conservative plain and simple, go with Bachmann or Santorum, if you want to win, go with Romney...Gingrich in so many ways is the worst of both. Puzzling to me...

Interesting that evangelicals are big supporters. He’s flawed. But who else do we have?

Flawed? FLAWED??? PLAYOFFS!!!???!!! Flawed?

On his very best day he is “flawed.” On his worst...

Well, but, um, who else do we have?

NO! Say it isn't so!

I am shocked, yes shocked, that such a thing can actually happen here.

Now I am beginning to wonder if other candidates are suffering the same fate at the hands of fake poseurs.

"if Gingrich is a conservative, than so is Romney"

How soon they forget.

Romney hated Reagan. Denied being a Reagan conservative. And went about proving it. Aligned himself with Ted Kennedy. Saddled Massachusetts with budget busting RomneyCare, taxpayer funded "safe and legal" abortion, gay marriage, gun control, leftist judges and a completely destroyed Republican label in Massachusetts. And RomneyCare DID become the model and impetus for ObamaCare. And Romney still brags about it being a conservative free-market solution. Give me a break! Forget about the tax reaper pointing that gun at your head if you fail to comply. RomneyCare is free-market!! Myth says so.

At least Newt DID align himself with and support Ronald Reagan and the Reagan Revolution which brought down the Soviet Union. We win, they lose. He DID build a successful Republican majority. He did cut taxes, did reduce the deficit, did balance the budget, did block HillaryCare, did reform welfare, did allow us to reap the whirlwind of the two decades long Reagan economy!!

The tea party conservative Palin didn't run. Bachmann stumbled out of the gates. Perry quickly ran out of gas. Cain shot off like a rocket then crashed and burned. Santorum never even made it out of the gates. Huntsman can't find the gate. Paul doesn't have enough flaming spam monkeys in the polls and not enough money to buy them all. Thank God we don't have electronic voting.

Can't sit back and let Romney have a open field to run in.

Who you gonna call?

I didn’t think Newt had a prayer.

Ryan was my guy....I hoped and prayed right up until the part where he broke my heart.

Obama it is then. Gingrich can’t win a general and you know it. If you want to make a statement while losing, might as well go with Bachmann or Santorum. Gingrich is a compromise all the way around from the conservative standards put forth on this forum.

I’m calling it for Gingrich.

At this point I agree with JR’s logic. The other conservatives are either irrelevant or have shot themselves in the foot.

That said, I’d still love a Gingrich/Perry ticket.

Could you possibly elaborate on that?

Who do they claim to be?

What are their real motives? I would assume they are very specific motives.

I know no such thing. I sincerely believe that Newt will crush Romney like a bug in the primaries and then with the ObamaCare-hating, Marxism-hating tea party and the vast majority of Republican conservative and moderate voters and like-minded independent voters will go on to defeat Obama and save or nation from falling off into the socialist abyss.
