Gingrich admits Romney would be on his short list for VP

Newt Gingrich tells CNN's Wolf Blitzer he would consider Mitt Romney to be a potential running mate (VIDEO). The interview is very much in keeping with Gingrich’s “keep it classy” campaign theme so far — and he treaded lightly, sounding neither overly enthusiastic about a VP Romney nor overly displeased with the idea.

But why did he take the bait at all? He could just as easily have remained indifferent, have answered with a simple, “I’d have to give it thought.” He won’t win over Romney supporters — and he significantly owes his own surge to the appetite for an anti-Romney. To praise Romney as “competent” and “serious” might be true as far as it goes — but it also reminds voters that, in some ways, Romney and Gingrich are very much alike. They’re both ambitious, intelligent and susceptible to switching positions.

Fear Not!

He won’t pick Mitt. There is no formulation that results in Mitt Romney bringing in any new voters. None.

You want a V.P. to do that (also to be the attack dog).

Newt will go with someone who brings new voters to our table (Rubio, Martinez, Bachmann, Ayotte, Jindal). Mitt brings nothing we don’t already get.

Heck, with Perry as an option, Mitt backers can’t even use the fundraising excuse. We can have money AND a Conservative at V.P. with Perry.

Mitt isn’t really on the radar; Newt is just being “above the fray” here, and making Mitt look small by comparison. Don’t worry.

I would rejoice at a Gingrich/Perry ticket.

I will not support Romney in any form at any time for any reason.

Santorum could step in as president immediately if needed

No he couldn't. Santroum is the least qualified candidate. Whining is not a leadership skill.

Romney can do less damage as vice president than in any other office.

***

No, No Romney in the VP slot. That could position him for the presidency in 2016, or if Newt all of a sudden has a stroke or something.

No way. Too many other great and wise choices out there. I would hope Newt would realize that and work it to his advantage.

Then again, I fall back on my original plan: ABO.

Nathan Bedford Forrest would probably have called you out for that.

It’s just a ploy to get Romney voters to come to his side when they see that he has no chance of getting the nomination.
