My premise is that this was a very stupid thing to say. If he thinks the GOP is evil why is he wasting money in IA?

Establishing electability which is the achilles heel for all third party candidates. If he wins or comes in a strong second, he’s established his creds. He’ll lose in NH and will probably be out of the race shortly after super Tuesday.
Or maybe not.
