Teenagers who found girl, 5, sleeping in abandoned stolen car are arrested THEMSELVES...
Daily Mail (UK) ^ | 18th December 2011

Two teenagers who spotted a five-year-old girl sleeping in a stolen car have told how they were arrested for 'doing the right thing' when they called police.

Tyler Thompson and Connor Roderick were held in custody for four hours and had their DNA and fingerprints taken.

Their clothes were also kept by police following the incident in St Helen Auckland, near Bishop Auckland, County Durham.

Now Tyler,16, and 18-year-old Connor plan to submit a complaint to the authorities about their treatment.

The teenagers were on their way to a shop to buy milk at about 10.15pm nine days ago when they found the abandoned red Skoda Fabia with its engine running.

It had been stolen from outside the Royal Chef Chinese takeaway in nearby Manor Road.

The driver had left his keys in the ignition while he went in to place an order and three youths were spotted driving the car away shortly after 10pm.

The friends recognised the car and while Connor ran to find the owner, Tyler spotted the young girl on the back seat and guarded the vehicle.

Connor then brought the police and the girl's father to the car where officers arrested them.

'We couldn't believe what was happening,' said Tyler. 'We hadn't done anything wrong. We thought we were doing the right thing but the police just didn't believe us. We were gutted.

'If we had left that car, I never would have been able to forgive myself if something had happened to that girl.'

I had two large metal safes at the same house tho they were kept in the nearby outbuilding. I noticed them stolen and it would have taken at least two people a lot of time to have moved them.

When I reported it the deputy came out, took my information and said they would all keep an eye out for then as they were unusual looking. This one was friendly and simply took what info I gave him. He never even hinted at wanting to see my drivers license etc.

We're dealing with estate properties as well. Mom passed in September, and Sis is in the primary estate house. I'm in a former rent house to keep those 2 from getting copper stripped. We're hoping to get the commercial property rented soon, so it's occupied.

That's the sad part. Even if the cops were following procedure, they could have explained it, instead of treating the kids like they were felons.

A little good PR would go far.

That’s certainly possible. I know Britainisn’t as freedom minded as Canada or the US.

We went ahead and sold Mother and Daddy’s old place. It was sold at a pretty big amount under it’s normal value as the market is dead right now.

We were probably lucky to sell it at all right now but a guy made us an offer which was ridiculously low we countered with an amount which was still way below normal value but we wanted to go ahead and get if sold.

Yeah sounds really suspicious to me too. No school age kids would EVER be sent down to the corner store by mom to get milk at 10pm. Much more likely they would get up extra early to go get it in order to have breakfast before school. /s

“That’s always a possible scenario. One of the first things they teach at cop school is that anybody is capable of anything.”

I would have thought the next thing they teach is to question the victims. Like the five year old? “Did these two boys kidnap you?”

****From this article, it sounds reasonable.****

Reasonable is the cops get their address, contact information and let them go. If these kids were involved and had a change in heart, how does treating them like criminals get them any closer to the instigators? If they were part of the gang that was at fault and turned them in, both excoriate and praise them in public.

This country has stood against much worse and used both hands to deal its way through.

Cops don't care if the people they convict are actually guilty. A conviction is a conviction, and it shows up as a gold star on their record.

That's why you should NEVER TALK TO POLICE.

By any chance did you mean this link? Never talk to the police! (48 mins long, but well worth it)

One of the first things they teach at cop school is that anybody is capable of anything.

Well then the two cops should have arrested each other. Can't be too careful, you know. Furthermore, anybody is capable of anything.

Please note the article dated the 18th said the incident happened 9 days earlier which would have been a Friday the 9th. When I was 16 or 18 I could go to the store at 2 am. In this small village in England on a Friday night, if the store is open, it seemed reasonable for older teenagers to go to get milk at 10PM.

They are taught that, so they don’t overlook possibilities, people who don’t fit the part, despite the evidence, like kindly grandmothers or women with angelic dispositions.

Never talk to the police.

Sadly, true. I will never call the police or speak to an officer without an attorney present. No matter what. There is no point in reporting a crime any more in most cities in the US. The police will just harass you and cause you grief and make no attempt whatsoever to apprehend the perpetrator. A stolen car might be an exception for liability reasons but I do not own a car.

The story doesn’t make it clear who the girl was - the daughter of the man who owned the car, of the thieves, of someone they fenced the car to...
