Gingrich says he personally made 35K from Freddie Mac

DAVENPORT, Iowa - Following a barrage of attacks from his Republican rivals that have led to sagging poll numbers, Newt Gingrich on Monday addressed one of the issues that's generated some of the most controversy for his presidential campaign -- his consulting firm receiving $1.6 million from mortgage giant Freddie Mac.

During an appearance at a security firm in Davenport, Gingrich said he personally received "about $35,000 a year" from his firm's contract with Freddie Mac, which he said was less than what he had charged for giving a speech.

He also said he talked to House Republicans about the mortgage lender's troubles "as a citizen" but that former GOP Reps. J.C. Watts and Rick Lazio have said their former House colleague never lobbied them on the issue.

Shame on Bachmann, Romney, Paul for inflating the figures that Newt was paid as a PRIVATE citizen. Shame on them for accusing Gingrich of lobbying. What Gingrich made is less than chump change. The media KNOWS Newt had expenses including maintaining 3 offices and over 30 staff and the money was paid out over a period of years.
If the Iowa voters believe the attack ads...shame on them as they are voting uninformed on the facts.

vetting the candidates is one thing...out right lies are another. Bachmann and Romney have gone way down in my eyes.
“It reflects badly on other Republicans that they haven’t got anything positive to say for themselves and they have to rely on their consultant trying to tear down a fellow Republican,” Gingrich said. “So they’re in effect doing Barack Obama’s work. I think the average Republican is going to be very unhappy with candidates whose entire campaign is negative.”

Politicians feel no shame!

For them the ends justify the means.

yeah, well,a lot of us “citizens” don’t get $35,000 for a years work, much less an hour or speaking.

No wonder so many are fed up with ALL the “people in charge”.

The huge disparities in wages or salary are going to lead to a French-stlye Revolution eventually. The 1950s era of 50 or 60 to 1 ratio between the new kid in the mailroom and the company president was also an era of American prosperity;todays 600 or 1000 to 1 pay ratio is not.

Yeah, well...people educate themselves and use their education to make a living. That is called “free enterprise,” Newt did not approach them..they came to him. There is NOTHING illegal about being a consultant. What he made is a lot less than other consultants make...it is much ado about nothing

I say let them keep playing the poor victimized Newt card. People outside the echo chamber aren’t buying it.

3 offices and 30 staff, perhaps...all of this crapola from romney and Bachman needs to be put in it’s place. (throwing what sticks on the wall..)

Newt didnt make all his money as a consultant. He sold books, he gave speeches, he gets a retirement. IF he wants to buy his wife a pricey present that is HIS business...not the publics. It is HIS money.

“And the rest went where ?????”

Didn’t read the article? Offices, overhead, 30 employees...and this was a total over years. Just won’t give it up, huh?

“Tiffany’s for jewelry for Callista?”

You seem to be against earning money in the private sector, entrepreneurship and now you are against people owning property, too? You on the right board, Pal?

Ah, but we don’t all resent others making it. That’s usually the lefties department. They’re down the hall...

Newt was hired as a private citizen to consult. Just like a tax consultant or broker. It is his area of expertise. He said they did NOT follow the advice he gave them. Newt is right. Shame on the ignorant that are playing the class envy card.
