Oakland's Quan doubts city can stop port closure
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 12/22/11 | Matthai Kuruvila, Audrey Cooper, Chronicle Staff Writers

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan said Wednesday that the city probably would be unable to stop future Occupy demonstrations from shutting down the Port of Oakland and that attempting to do so would require at least 500 police officers, which the city would deploy if the port paid the $1.5 million cost.

In a meeting with Chronicle editors, Quan said that even with that many officers, a handful of protesters could sneak around police lines and shut down the port.

"I don't know what you know about the port, but with the longshoremen it only takes one person with a bike getting through a fence and getting to the gate. Then they (stop working) and call a mediator," the mayor said.

so the people of Oakland are in good hands. Oh I don’t know what we would do if there was a riot we’d just let them take those pampers. This is a leaderless city.

So that means you’re not even going to TRY?

Your police have many tools at their disposal, Quan. Tasers, night sticks, rubber bullets, tear gas, and more.

USE them all!

This guy is a freaking leftie, but from what I've heard, he may be right about the Longshoreman's Union.

Maybe they need another port somewhere else. Unfortunately, California isn't big on sheltered harbors.

I don’t know if I’m more appalled by her demanding tribute (see: Barbary pirates) or by the complicity of the unions. And Mayor Quan’ s snide little smack at the union to boot!

Just call the Union thugs whose jobs are threatned. they will take care of the problem, especially if there are no police around, and the power fails to the survalence cameras.

I think a few civilians might want to give stopping them a try.

This is a leaderless city.

You're just NOW realizing this? After David "Where's Waldo" Dinkins, then Jerry "Moon Bat" Brown and now "Clueless" Quan, it's no wonder anyone with half a brain is running away from that hell hole of a city, including the sports teams!

So then, why does Oakland even have a Police Department if enforcing the law is too darn much trouble?

Wow. Those guys sound like real wussies. Union guys of course will stop “working” at the drop of a hat I guess.

The mayor should be recalled, she is a laughing stock.

If the mayor and governor weren't in sympathy with the Occupyers, it would be a matter of mobilizing the State Guard and authorizing them to use whatever force necessary to keep the port open.

Soon an expanded Panama Canal will accommodate larger container ships and shippers will find it faster and cheaper to use Gulf and Atlantic ports. One more nail in the coffin of the California economy.

David Dinkins was NY Mayor. You’re thinking of Ron “Red” Dellums.

Humboldt harbor has a couple of large docks. Might be time for some shippers to consider alternatives.

Water cannon is a nice idea.

Water cannon and some butyric acid mixed in... and high entertainment will ensue.
