BREAKING: Perry disqualified from Va. primary ballot

Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry failed to submit enough valid signatures to qualify for the Virginia primary ballot, state GOP officials said Friday evening.

Perry’s campaign told state election officials it had submitted 11,911 signatures, but a Virginia Republican familiar with the situation said that the Texas governor did not submit the required 10,000.

Earlier Friday, the Republican Party of Virginia certified former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and Rep. Ron Paul (Tex.) to appear in the March ballot.

Four candidates — Romney, Perry, Paul and former House speaker Newt Gingrich — turned in thousands of signatures by the deadline. State party officials are spending the day certifying the signataries.

They have not examined Gingrich’s signatures yet, but expected to do so by late Friday night.

Candidates had until 5 p.m. to collect 10,000 signatures from across the state, including 400 from each congressional district.

Republican presidential candidates Michele Bachmann, Jon Huntsman and Rick Santorum did not submit signatures, according to state GOP officials

.
Make them fill in an application form, and check their voter registration, and criminal history.

That is what Reagan’s organization did way back in ‘66.

Jerry Kilgore is a big name in Virginia politics, and a good man.

I am shocked that he was not able to get these signature collected, and frankly I think he needed to get the local bloggers and committees more involved.

Of course, I haven’t been in a committee since 2008, but I still get invited, and I am on the RPV mailing list and on the Perry campaign list. I am surprised because nobody from the campaign ever asked me for help even though I told them I could do signatures. Neither did anybody from the Bachmann or Santorum campaign.

I will wait for official word before I speculate what happened, because i don’t see how you can think you have 11,000 signatures and only have 4000.

On the other hand, I’d rather see them miss by thousands than by dozens. I could have done something about dozens. I could do anything about thousands.

(VA Lieutenant Governor)

http://billbolling.com/news/article/1755

Just as Virginia Democrats did earlier this month for President Barack Obama, Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling Friday will submit the documents necessary to get Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on Virginia’s March 6 primary ballot.

State law calls on candidates to submit 10,000 voter signatures — at least 400 of them must come from each congressional district in the state — for a candidate to qualify for the presidential ballot.

Bolling, the state chairman of Romney’s Virginia campaign, and Del. Chris Peace of Hanover County will deliver the Romney paperwork to state election officials Friday afternoon.

We’re hearing Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s surrogates will file his paperwork tomorrow and we’ve asked the campaign for comment. The state filing deadline is Thursday at 5 p.m.

In a crowded primary field, Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, is a leading contender for the GOP nomination and the right to challenge Obama for the White House.

He visited Richmond earlier this month for a fundraiser attended by Bolling.

(that is funny that they mentioned Perry)

I have only a SINGLE data point for Newt. One person who was verifying signatures said she had a 75% success rate for Newt signatures. That would not be a good sign.

Apparently, we have a lot of non-registered people signing. I’m not surprised — I thought sure the rule was that for the signatures, you only had to be OLD ENOUGH to vote when the election took place. I didn’t think you had to be registered already.

In fact, you can vote in the primary if you will be 18 at the general election. So if you drop off non-registered people, you could be cutting out people who will be eligible to vote in the primary and the general election.

But I have to think they know the rules.

Didn’t Obama win Virginia in 2008?

(from article above)

"Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling Friday will submit the documents"

Friday? Today? Deadline was yesterday. Typo I guess.

We debate that regularly. The opposing view is that the signatures rarely indicate support, they just indicate you had money to hire someone who could collect signatures. People sign petitions just to be done with it. I collected signatures for multiple candidates in 2008, and signed for many of the candidates.

There have been suggestions to use donations as an alternative — show you have $100,000 in hard-money donations from the state, and you are on the ballot. Or let people pay to get on the ballot.

I don’t know. If someone paid me $10,000, I’m sure I could have gotten them 1000 signatures from my district. But I would be surprised if my district was a problem for any candidate, we are solid republican and it’s easy to get signatures.

Honestly, if Perry really wants on the ballot I am sure he can sue to get on it.

How hard he fights to get on it will tell us everything we need to know about how long HE thinks he is going to be in this race.

And they also have the at least 400 per congressional district rule as well.

To be honest that sounds irrational and capricious. It means that, if in one congressional district every person hates Rick Perry, and, if in every other congressional district every republican in the state loves him, then he can’t be on the ballot in Virginia.

10,000 votes sounds arbitrary and whimsical as well, and it requires time and manpower that every candidate has in limited supply.

I’m betting this could be challenged legally if someone really wanted to do so.

Newt likes to claim credit for a lot of things he didn't do. He is an idea man, not a manager or executive. It was one of the reasons the members forced him out. He was also the only sitting speaker to receive a reprimand. The ethics committee voted 7-1 to reprimand him and fine him $300,00. The House voted 395-28 to uphold that recommendation with 90% of the Reps supporting the reprimand.

It remains to be seen what kind of ground game he can organize and how much money he can raise. His profligate spending on himself on the campaign trail is not exactly what donors like to see.

Suing over VA’s voting process is a losing proposition.

Though it would be nice if Mitt and Ron’s signatures were examined and found not to have enough valid signatures too he he.

It’s just one person, and I have no way to know if it’s typical. I’m just cruising all our local blogs, looking for people who were involved in the counting. Not much to tell. We all assumed Gingrich and Perry would be fine.
