Anti-whaling activists use drone to track Japan fleet

Anti-whaling activists said they had intercepted the Japanese harpoon fleet far north of Antarctic waters Sunday with the help of a military-style drone.

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society spokesman Paul Watson said the unmanned long-range drone, launched from the anti-whaling ship the Steve Irwin, had located the Japanese fleet and relayed the coordinates back to the activists.

Watson said Sea Shepherd, a militant activist group which annually shadows and harasses the Japanese whalers, had caught up with the fleet at 37 degrees south, 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometres) above Antarctic waters.

No whales had been killed so far, he added.

"This is going to be a long hard pursuit from here to the coast of Antarctica," said captain Watson.

"But thanks to these drones, we now have an advantage we have never had before -- eyes in the sky."

Though three Japanese security vessels were now tailing the Steve Irwin to prevent it from following the Nisshin Maru factory ship, Watson said the activists had the upper hand with their two drones, donated by a US port security firm.

"We can cover hundreds of miles with these drones and they have proven to be valuable assets for this campaign," he said.

While the Steve Irwin was being tailed by the harpooners' security detail Watson said Sea Shepherd's other vessels the Bob Barker and Brigitte Bardot -- which can travel faster than the whalers -- were free to chase the Japanese south.

Who finances these pirates? What is the name of the port security firm donating the drones?

My bet is they don’t have permission to use Steve’s name.

Can someone name another island nation that has inflicted more damage on the world in more ways than one?

At some point in time I would think a Japanese whaler would call upon a Kongo class Destroyer of the Japanese Navy to defend their legal rights. We might get to watch some Mk 45 5’ gun practice on the tree/whale huggers. Let’s see that one on Discovery/History channel Whaling Wars...

Ah, Whale Bacon, I would like some more!

Too bad I do not expect to return to Japan again.
Maybe I can get Trader Joe’s to carry it? LOL!

They have his wife’s permission to use Steve’s name. Apparently the Irwin’s donate money to these pirates. Bob Barker has also given them a couple of million as well.

These environazis need to be shut down. The whalers have permits these whales and there is no longer a shortage of them. They have become a pest on the west coast.

Merry Christmas

I applaud what they do! They fight for what they believe in. The Japanese have no right to kill whales in the Whale sanctuary. It’s a big world, let them kill whales elsewhere, if they must. There is no legitimate reason for killing whales. I hope they stop Japan from killing a single whale.

Merry Christmas

Remember when we “accidentally” shot down that Iranian airliner, or when the Russian’s “accidentally” shot down that Korean airliner?

Certainly the Japanese Navy, while performing testing, training or some kind of activity could “accidentally” send a ship to ship missile off course or something.

... As long as they don’t pick a slow news day.

Drones, eh?

I would consider that a challenge for skeet practice.

Wrong. The whaling they do is protected and perfectly legal.

Efff the Japanese. Just like Efff the Chinese.

The Japanese Navy “accidentally” bombed the crap out of Pearl Harbor and killed my grandfather almost exactly 70 years ago.

Now you think it’d be great if the Japanese Navy bombed some more American ships so that their worker drones can eat whale blubber while they scheme to put hard working American out of jobs????

Isn’t that a kick in the pants.
