Thanks Salamander and stockpirate. The only way to get a carbon date from this would have been the organic materials caked on the outside, but it appears that they cleaned the whole thing off first. The guess in the article -- gargoyle from a demolished medieval church -- sounds like the source of the date given the artifact.
