Law Would Prevent Parents From Giving Kids 'Weird Names'
Arutz Sheva ^ | 31/12/11 | David Lev

Posted on 12/31/2011 2:00:16 PM PST by Eleutheria5

A new law proposed by MK Zvulun Orlev (Bayit Yehudi), who is chairman of the Knesset Children's Rights Committee, would prevent parents from giving their children “weird” or strange names that other children were likely to make fun of. The law would forbid parents from naming their children with names that “hurt their welfare or their feelings.”

The law, to be presented Sunday for the approval of the Ministerial Law Committee, would establish a “public names committee” which would include experts such as social workers, psychologists, and educators, that would confer with the relevant government ministries on “unacceptable” names that were likely, in their opinion, to cause children damage. Names that could hurt the social standing, feelings, or welfare of children would be banned, and the Interior Ministry would be instructed not to accept them for registration. The law states that “a person's name has an important influence on how society and those around him look at him. A name is the most important asset that a person has. Judaism places great importance on a person's name, and many people consult with rabbis before deciding what to name their children.” Orlev said that while the law may at first glance seem somewhat invasive, it was by no means unique; a number of countries around the world, including Sweden, Portugal, Norway, and Peru, to name just a few, had laws preventing parents from giving their children “negative” names.

Shouldn’t legislaters be legistlating on more important legislation? Let me start with a suggestion: How about, say, make it mandatory that if one were to pick one’s nose, it be done with a left-hand digit? Or, instituting a fine for walking on a sidewalk line (US $25/line).

Stupid law. Although there are people out there who are even stupider. A psychologist friend working for a hospital was called in a number of years ago to try and persuade a new mother not to name her child “Meconium.” She just liked the sound of it. And she persisted.

I was almost 3 years old when my little sister was born and after seeing a Billy Graham special, I was sure that my parents had given her a boy’s name, having watched George Beverly Shay sing.

No, they didn’t name her George.

Not the first time they tried this:

LUKE 1

59 And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.

60 And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.

61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.

63 And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.

64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.

LOL! Love that!

I think this video caused some controversy in India a couple of years ago. The news articles kept talking about some video about a Ghandi character that wasn’t a pacifist nor a vegetarian and the Hindus were just all up in arms about it. I willing to bet some one translated the narration of this video, posted it, and it went viral there.

Come to think of it, weren’t some kids taken in by CPS a year back due to naming their son Hitler? I think it was in the Lehigh Valley.

I wondered where that came from. Rush used to us that as a commercial filler during his early years.

“A new law proposed by MK Zvulun Orlev (Bayit Yehudi)”
Geez, I couldn’t imagine why someone named Zvulun Orlev (Bayit Yehudi) would ever want to propose a law like this.

Actually, all the countries of (at least) northern Europe (Holland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany etc.) have the same laws forbidding weird names (actually making a local official sign off on them) or the same exact names from the same places and times.... This both prevents “Moon Unit” names and 10 “Hans Jacobsens” in one village all the same age....

No, it wouldn’t work in America. Seems to work over there though—as they’ve had these laws for generations.
