~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base adjacent to Tucson, Arizona. The installation is primarily an Air Combat Command (ACC) base with the 355th Fighter Wing (355 FW) as the host activity. The base is also home to Headquarters, 12th Air Force (12 AF) and the Air Force Material Command's (AFMC) 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (309 AMARG), previously known as the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center (AMARC).

The 355th Fighter Wing is the host unit at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, however, other units also call D-M home. Twelfth Air Force, the 563rd Rescue Group and The Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG) are all based out of D-M.

After the execution of Operation Enduring Freedom, eight A-10s from the 355th Wing were called to Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan to fly close air support missions supporting multinational ground forces.

In September 2002, the 48th, 55th, and the 79th Rescue Squadrons (RQS) transferred under control of the 355th Wing, equipped with HC-130 aircraft and HH-60 helicopters. At the same time, the 41st and 43 Electronic Combat Squadrons were realigned under the control of the 55th Electronic Combat Group (55 ECG).

While personnel and aircraft remained on Davis-Monthan AFB operational control of the 55 ECG was assumed by the 55th Wing at Offutt AFB, Nebraska. Another major wing realignment occurred on 1 October 2003 with the activation of the 563 Rescue Group on Davis-Monthan AFB. Control of the 48th, 55th, and 79th Rescue Squadrons (RQS) was passed to the new group with the 23rd Wing assuming operational command of the unit.

Good Evening to The Canteen.

Always enjoy these visits to our military bases.

I was born and raised in Spokane and we had two Air Force bases just west of town... Fairchild Air Force Base and Gieger Field. When I was a pup, we also had an Army Base, Ft Wright. Ft. Wright became a community college campus in later years and Geiger Field became the Spokane Airport (GEG). I think the Air National Guard still utilizes Gieger Field. Fairchild once was home to B-52’s but is now a KC-135 base.

With all the Army and Air Force bases, I still joined the US Navy and my twin brother joined the US Marine Corps.

Thanks for the tour.

Oh, yeah! And believe me, the nose needs as soft as possible! Hubby has allergies as well but not nearly as bad so he is only allowed the regular...lol.

That’s pretty much what it’s like. Only good thing about it (if there is such a thing) is I didn’t develope them until I was 40 so at least it hasn’t been for my entire life.

Hi, Ma and company!

Ahhhhhhhhh... Davis Montham. ‘The Boneyard’. Home of countless
obsolete airframes. Visited the base many, many times in the late 80s and throughout the 1990s. To procure (beg, borrow, steal) several C-141 cargo floors worth of conveyor roller panels, wenches and lots of loose Aero-Medical equipment.

The arrangement of Maintenance Stands in this photo reminds me of many an afternoon spent with my arms being soaked with JP-4 Jet Fuel while removing and replacing the engine’s Fuel Control. Lots of gas in that plumbing. Even with the Circuit Breakers pulled.

It’s nice to see that things never really change.

Jack.

Jack...good evening/morning...((HUGS))

Sounds like you have had quite the time there. Was your mission just to go to Davis-Monthan and see what you could find? Do you go anywhere you want?

Hope you and your furbabies had a good holiday season. Still hunting?

Hi, Ma!

When I was at Andrews, AFB with its 12 Reserve C-141s. Every six months or so, a half dozen of us would visit The Boneyard on TDY status for a week. With a Shopping List of needed parts. Our mission while at Davis Montham was to bring whatever wasn’t nailed down.

I have a Midnight Mom Cat and her three variation of Growing Midnight Kittens roaming around the back yard. Also a tan and black striped Tabby. They like to chase and learn as Mom teaches them to kill and nibble on moles.

Haven’t seem much of larger intruders.

An interesting way to “shop”....gets the job done.

Glad you have the crew to keep your mole population in check.

Good morning, Dave....lots of military around you. It is funny about you and your brother going to 2 different services than those right near you.

Hope New Years and your birthday celebrations were fun. All those fireworks displays just for you. LOL!
