Rand Paul: My father is misunderstood on Israel
Jerusalem Post ^ | 1/4/12 | HILARY LEIILA KRIEGER

DES MOINES, Iowa – Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul’s views on Israel and Iran have been greatly misunderstood, his son Senator Rand Paul said in a conversation with The Jerusalem Post just hours before Iowans voted in the first caucuses for the GOP nomination Tuesday night.

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, who like his father espouses libertarian views, said his father’s positions on the threat of a nuclear Iran are in line with those of Mossad head Tamir Pardo and other prominent Israeli figures, who he suggested has questioned the wisdom of using a military option against Iran.

Pardo was quoted by Haaretz as telling Israel’s diplomats in a closed-door meeting that a nuclear Iran was not necessarily an existential threat to Israel.

“Nobody wants Iran to have nuclear weapons. It would destabilize the Middle East,” Rand Paul told the Post following a campaign event in a Des Moines high school, where hundreds of students cheered at his father’s appearance.

“And yet, we have to ask, would it be worse to have a preemptive war with Iran or better? Or can we contain them? We contained the Soviet Union,” Rand Paul said.

" I was begging your pardon in case I was dealing with someone who completely understands something. Knowing that not to be the case, please allow me to enjoy my sarcasm while you enjoy yours. Or would you like to spread the guilt around instead? "

Understand ? what is your point in all this ? to defend someone who has no love for Israel and the Jewish people ?
Ron Paul has made it very clear to many that he has no intentions to help Israel in time of need or defend Israel.. so ? what's your point again ?

And I assume you know that about 20% of Israel’s population, its citizens with a vote, are Arab.

Here is what I *think* a Zionist is: Someone who will go to any expense/effort to prevent anyone other than a Jew to reside in territories currently defined as the State of Israel. I welcome any correction you or the reader might offer. Suspect there will be some divergence of opinions/defiintions on this one. So what?

If that was correct, the term would only have existed after the creation of the nation state of Israel but it has existed long before that. Its usually used in various ways, but generally its a more politically correct term used to describe jews (usually in a negative connotation).

Famous anti-semetic literature like the "Protocols of the elders of Zion" don't even make references to Israel, and (at the risk of invoking Godwins law), the Nazis used to use the term "ZIonist" quite often, without any reference to a future existence of Israel.

Note, Martin Luther King, described anti-zionism as anti-semetism, he did not draw any other distinctions and saw the 2 as interchangeable terms.

That said, around 1/5 of the Israeli population is not of jewish decent.

He seems to be consistent in suggesting we don’t help Isarel’s enemies, either. If I lived in the ghetto and decided to police it, would you gladly lend me some cash for a bazooka, and shed blood for me too?

I did not know that. Shall I not assume there are those in Israel who will go to any expense/effort to get them out and keep them out, just as there are people in our country who, for whatever reason, hate all Mexicans and want them to leave?

Is Zionism an extreme or not? A poster above says the word brings negative connotations in many/most contexts. Like a sort of name calling.

Took a quick read through your link. Article points to a wide-ranging definition. But says it, “in its broadest sense, has supported the self-determination of the Jewish people in a sovereign Jewish national homeland.”

May I ask what part of meddling on the part of the USA invites self-determination on the part of Isarel?

I have a feeling Rand is more dangerous as he hides his beliefs better.

I think the day we cut all aid to Israel, the moslums will crap their pants in fear, knowing that the leash that had held the Israeli Military in Check had also been cut.
