Hours after being robbed at work, Cumberland Farms cashier fired for having too much money
The Republican ^

Three nights before Christmas, Douglas Moore was at his job at the Cumberland Farms on West Street when a man stuck a gun in his face and told him to empty the cash register.

The next morning, Moore’s boss called him at home to ask him to come to the store for a talk.

“I thought she was going to see how I was doing,” he said.

Hours after being surprised by a gunman, Moore, 24, of Springfield, was surprised again – he was fired.

“I didn’t think I’d be fired,” he said. “Right before Christmas doesn’t seem right.”

Moore, who worked there for about 18 months putting in 40 hours a week for just less than $9 an hour, was let go because at the time of the robbery he had more than $75 in the register drawer.

The amount of money taken in the Dec. 22 robbery was never disclosed by police, but anything more than $75 is a violation of Cumberland Farms policy, he said.

Moore said management told him they could tell from the overhead surveillance tapes that the robber made off with more than $200.

He does not deny that there was more than $75 in the register, but said it was not much more. It might have been $100, or maybe as high as $150, but he disputes it was more than $200.

Good people that show up for work are a dime a dozen in the cumberland farms world.

Ya know what? It's the same with 95 percent off all companies. Trust me.

These greedymart chains are all the same. They do not care if their help gets their brains splattered all over the big gulp cups...At that point, it's all about PR and paying off the dead clerks family, hoping they go away quietly, after they pay for a 3rd rate funeral.

You've got to be really desperate or stupid to work at the robbery level in todays America.

I could show you pics of clerks with half their heads gone...But I won't.

The fatcorps could simply care less.

What else would you have Cumby's do? Have armed security personnel on the night shift? Be open only 9-5?

Loyalty means nothing anymore....from the employer and employee standpoint. And it hasn't for at least 20-30 years in many, many companies.

I'd blame lawyers for much of the mess...that we are in these days.

Companies have combated that litigation fever with H.R. rules and regs. With retained legal chihuahuas...to do battle with other legal chihuahuas.......

Regardless of a company policy, you do realize that the *biggest* losses a retail employer faces is from employee theft?

If that Cumby's has gas pumps, it's from drive-offs.

Often, the quicki-mart is the only available place that inner city people have to grab a gallon of milk, or pack of smokes. Many of these denizens do not have a car, and cannot take bus, late at night to Whole Foods, in the 'burbs, where you live, to stock up on the necessities. They provide a valuable service to the 'hood.

You obviously have a hard-on for Cumby's. Don't work there. Work in a place that has no policies/rules. Don't shop there. Don't own their stock. Write to corporate: http://www.cumberlandfarms.com/StayInTouch/default.aspx. Grow up!

>>I couldn’t help but notice you evaded all the questions above.<<

As have you, not answered any of my questions. I presumed that since *you* set up the *style* of this argument, ignoring your questions was merely another way saying *musta been rhetorical*.

So far, you've managed to punch holes in all your own arguments. Swiss cheese is in the reefer case at the end of aisle #4. Self-immolation has a long history and does make a point. You live up to your tagline well. Congrats.

You’re way out of your league here Daffy. But I’ll play.

List your specific questions by number, and I’ll do the same.

Lets see who is up to it.

He didn’t crawl out from under a rock. He knows something about retail money handling.

The money should be put through the slot in the drop safe. The store wouldn’t accept a $100 dollar bill. That customer would have to buy elsewhere or use a credit card.

The employee has no access to the drop safe and in many locations, the manager doesn’t either. The manager has one key and the armored car company that picks up the money has the other.

I ran a gas station during the last gas crisis (Jimmy Carter). The armored car company would often pick up more than $20,000 daily from the safe. Every $50, I or my employee on duty would put the money in an envelope and push it through a slot in a floor safe that we couldn’t open without the armored car company.

Not every buisness has a drop safe and not everybody in Wyoming accepts plastic.

You're a fairly stupid person, the kind I used to unapologetically tell to shop somewhere else.

You can set any policy you wish for any operation you run or own. The same is true of anyone else.

The facts:

---The more money in the till, the more likely a store will be robbed.

---The more robberies, the greater possibility that someone will be hurt or killed.

---Stores with this policy post it clearly for all to see.

---Funds in excess of the limit are dropped into a drop safe, the contents of which are not available to the clerk...that's where the "real" money is.

---The policy of limited cash didn't have the effect of increasing store sales, obviously, but of increasing clerk safety.

--To be effective, any policy has to be enforced. It appears that management was lax in this case.

As I told one indignant would-be customer many years ago, yes, sir, it is inconvenient for you. But I have no interest in calling Maggie's husband to tell him his wife won't be coming home.

You put a lesser value on your employee's lives. That is your choice...but it is hardly something to brag about.

CF is brutal to their workers. They do not care about their safety...

The story contradicts that statement.
