Hours after being robbed at work, Cumberland Farms cashier fired for having too much money
The Republican ^

Three nights before Christmas, Douglas Moore was at his job at the Cumberland Farms on West Street when a man stuck a gun in his face and told him to empty the cash register.

The next morning, Moore’s boss called him at home to ask him to come to the store for a talk.

“I thought she was going to see how I was doing,” he said.

Hours after being surprised by a gunman, Moore, 24, of Springfield, was surprised again – he was fired.

“I didn’t think I’d be fired,” he said. “Right before Christmas doesn’t seem right.”

Moore, who worked there for about 18 months putting in 40 hours a week for just less than $9 an hour, was let go because at the time of the robbery he had more than $75 in the register drawer.

The amount of money taken in the Dec. 22 robbery was never disclosed by police, but anything more than $75 is a violation of Cumberland Farms policy, he said.

Moore said management told him they could tell from the overhead surveillance tapes that the robber made off with more than $200.

He does not deny that there was more than $75 in the register, but said it was not much more. It might have been $100, or maybe as high as $150, but he disputes it was more than $200.

You too....This guy needs to sue this F’d up company for total mental stress, for failing to provide adequate security and safety of their employees.

He needs to hire the very best attorney possible.

Safety does not have to be a gun.
Two employees is safety. Safety in numbers.
Either that or do not keep the store open overnight.

It's not the employee who needs training...it's the customer...they need to show their *Miss Manners* course completion certificate, three personal references and have the precisely correct change at all times. In some cases, their parole officer, therapist, court appointed attorney, social worker should be present.

Bad things just happen I guess.

They aint seen nothing...Sticking a gun in someones face, threatening to blow their brains out, can and does cause significant mental/stress issues.

Seems the company was only concerned with their profits than employee safety, since they did not provide any degree of safety for their employees, who are clearly subject to armed robbery and possibly murder.

Haw haw. If the guy had been shot that would have been a real laff riot for you.

Actually it wouldn't Brian but since that wasn't the case, I'm calling this guy an accomplice to a crime......

As P.T. Barnum once said "There's a sucker born every minute..."... Happy Birthday Byron!

You don't think that his claim that he had to discontinue his on-line education because he had to look for another job wasn't another red flag? Gosh, one would think that he's hiking the street 16 hours a day looking........

You don't think that his claim that he had to discontinue his on-line education because he had to look for another job wasn't bla bla bla...

That has zip to do with nothing and this f'd up company's attorneys know that too well.

Sticking a gun in someones face, threatening to blow their brains out, can and does cause significant mental/stress issues.

Sue them into next year!

...you don't think that his claim...

No, because I don't automatically infer the worst possible motive from a person's actions under stress. Given your unwarranted snark it may be time to review that policy.

The sole employee. CF has only one employee at night who has to do the work of two. Can you do that without messing up?

Hard to say, never tried it. But having in excess of the money demanded by the store in the cash register and then being robbed, that leads me to believe he may be an accomplice.........

That's my opinion, go ahead and shoot me if you want but I'm sticking to it.......

There is a positive side to this, it now gives him full time to pursue his on-line degree in accounting rather than just the hours at home when he wasn't working..............

Oh wait, he had to discontinue the program so he could look for work.

Yea, that really makes sense too........

Over reaction, is over reaction, suspend the man for a couple of days. No one in their right mind should work for a company that is that harsh.

Their policy was stated.

I work for an outfit...that is just as "harsh". But when you know the rules, policies...you follow them or you suffer the consequences. You have basic "rights"....but they employ you at their pleasure.

My company has a no smoking rule at work...In fact the whole facility has the same rule. If you are on their property and smoking in your vehicle and caught doing so...you are subject to being fired. Everyone knows this....But I've seen folks fired for it.

I don't agree with it. But they can dictate what they want..on their property and on their "time".

BTW, I work 3 days a week in a very large hospital.....

And...fwiw- I enjoy a premium cigar about once a fortnight...but not at work.

Good people that show up for work are a dime a dozen in the cumberland farms world. Loyalty is what keeps people honest, not harsh rules.

Don't matter a whit what their stinking policies regarding their profits or hiding their cash are.

The question is, why did they fail to provide their employees with adequate safety and security?

Would the CEO's of this corporation put their sons and daughters behind a counter where cash, safes and other valuables are located, with zero safety and or security from armed robbery?

Hell no they wouldn't.

They'd laugh in your face, and tell ya to get lost.
