Climate change issue slows analysis of extreme weather

At the end of one of the most bizarre weather years in U.S. history, climate research stands at a crossroads.
Scientists say they could, in theory, do a better job of answering the question "Did global warming have anything to do with it?" after extreme weather events like the drought in Texas and the floods in New England.
But efforts to put out prompt reports on the causes of extreme weather are languishing. Chief among the difficulties scientists face: the hostile political environment for new climate-science initiatives and a shrinking federal budget.
And so, as the weather becomes more erratic by the year, the public is left to wonder what is going on.
A typical year in this country features three or four weather disasters whose costs exceed $1 billion each. But in 2011, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has tallied a dozen such events, including wildfires in the Southwest, floods in multiple regions of the country and a deadly spring tornado season. And the agency has not finished counting. The final costs are certain to exceed $50 billion.
"I've been a meteorologist 30 years and never seen a year that comes close to matching 2011 for the number of astounding, extreme weather events," said Jeffrey Masters, a co-founder of the popular website Weather Underground. "Looking back in the historical record, which goes back to the late 1800s, I can't find anything that compares, either."

I’m just loving this warm winter since we didn’t get any global warming last winter.
The year I lived in Virgina, my homestate of NY had one of the nicest, warmest winters on record.

Some of the reason we have bizarre weather is an effort by the warmists and MSM to make weather seem odd. Yes there were some standout events, but none are presented with any perspective.
Yes, 2010 was warmer than 2005- but I think the difference was .015 C, which implies that they can measure global temperature to fife significant digits and tiny error bars.
It was in the 50s here in southern Michigan yesterday. About 45 degrees here today. However, last year they were out ice fishing two weeks before Christmas.
We’re all enjoying the no snow, no boots here in Upstate NY. We had plenty of rain so I’m not worried about lake/stream levels. If this is the result of global warming....bring it on!!
In 1975 I had a discussion with a fellow engineer. He had read that climatologists had concluded that the last several hundred years of weather in North America had been extraordinarily mild and stable compared with the rest of history. My reply to him, at the time, was that during that same period there had been a large amount of prayer over that continent as believing farmers turned to a providential God for good weather conditions.
If you measure the effects of weather in estimated dollars of damage, it will surely get worse every year, which says less about the weather than one would think.
My explanation for this warm winter: I bought my first snowblower last spring.

The AGW Scientist are stupid. It is the Sun that drives weather variability. It has been a know fact for 100+ years. Sunspot Cycles indicate the variability. Sunspot Minimums and Maximums are when weather is the most variable. We just came out of the longest, deepest and quietest Sunspot Minimum in my lifetime. And we just had the worst drought and hottest temps in the history of any living human in Texas. Oct 2010-Oct 2011
Now since the sunspots are returning, we are having a pretty normal rainfall & temp years.

I love that point. I’ve been thinking about the first century spread of Christianity along the same lines recently. Can you imagine that a pagan world fell for “Jesus is God, the only true God?” Not by human design or effort for sure.

Did those idiots factored in inflation. The cost of property which is most of the dollar damage skyrocketed till the real estate implosion in 2007.
If anyone wants a good website that often posts examples as to just how not extreme the weather is, in comparison to previous decades and centuries.....here it is.
He can be a bit of a smartarse in his presentation....which lends well to the subject matter.
Take AGW with a grain of salt, but be serious in opposing the impact that this Gaea based science/hackery can have on your life, liberty and sanity.

I suspect you are right. I live in Wyoming and have yet to plant a palm tree....or even an orange tree. Surely after all of these years of “warming” I should be able to.
