black Democrat activists will play up the fact that blacks were not allowed to join the Mormon Church until the 1980s.

I'm neither a Romney fan nor a Mormon booster. But for the sake of accuracy blacks were always allowed to join the Mormon church. But it was not until 1978 that they were allowed to advance to the Priesthood and participate in Temple work -- very important parts of the Mormon belief system.
