62 Year old grandfather on vacation dies in Florida police custody
The Daily Mail ^ | 01/12/2012 | Lee Moran

A mentally ill grandfather died after police officers strapped him naked to a chair, smothered him with a 'spit hood' and pepper-sprayed him 10 times during a 43-hour ordeal, it has been claimed.

Nick Christie, 62, was allegedly tortured in the 'Devil's Chair' at Lee County jail after being detained by Florida police officers in March 2009 following a 'mental breakdown'.

The hood, designed to stop him from spitting at officers, meant he could not escape the noxious spray's fumes - and he was never allowed to clean the residue from his body.

His family is now suing Lee County Sheriff's Department for 'wrongful death'.

If this happened in March why are we talking about it now?

Can't speak for Holder I'm not up on Marxist theology.

But, my daughter did work for the FDLE for a couple of years and they are the best of the best.they are the highest law enforcement agency in the state. They get all the cases that locals can't handle or where local law enforcement would be compromised such as this case.

There is no better law enforcement in the state I can assure you.

-——The hood, designed to stop him from spitting at officers-——

Since the hood did not come with a warning label, the manufacturers are liable and toast.

Henceforth if the kids don’t get all the hood manufacturing companies money, the hoods will carry three or four warning labels.

The same may be true for the manufacturer of the spray stuff. although it likely contains warning labels, it likely doesn’t have a label advising not to spray in conjunction with a spit hood. The spray maker is also toast.

The county is likely broke and hard to sue. Best to go after the deep pockets and easy pickings.

Except, if the hoods and spray were purchased with law enforcement grant money from the Feds, then the feds might be liable and they have big deep pockets

Somebody with diabetes, low or high blood sugar can also be interpreted as deranged.

There is a more basic underlying problem here.

Our freedom is premised upon respect of legitimate authority.

Even LEOs must respect legitimate authority.

They are given authority by the state to use deadly force where the situation justifies its use.

Those LEOs who rebel from the legitimate authority of the state might simply live by the power of their commission, but if they also commit criminal behavior, are not above the law.

The family is bringing a lawsuit.

So where are the good guys in the FDLE that you vouched for?

Am I correct in assuming you are a law enforcement officer?

It is better to post a partial title in such cases, and acknowledge the full title elsewhere, not to reword the title.

British or Asian press?

The Canadian press does a better job than the NY Times on US stories. Ottawa Citizen is very good.

My idea of liberty doesn’t involve armed agents of the STATE beating and killing unarmed citizens.

It’s long past time for the good cops to deal with the bad ones. They’re going to get lumped in with the bad ones by the citizenry if they don’t.

I’ve been reading the Economist for over a decade. That’s when I finally had enough of Time/Newsweak/US News and World report... as they are nothing more than advertisements for liberal newspeak.

Though, even they are quite libtarded on some issues, like ‘gore-bull warming’.

If you set your web browser to refuse cookies, you can prevent most of those problems.

That said, if you need to logon to a site, you won’t be able to with all cookies refused. So you’d need to be selective as to which cookies you accept and which you don’t.

Good thing he was an American grandpa and not a terrorist. If he was a terrorist, the DOJ'd be suing him for torture. Oh, American citizen? Christian? Move along, nothing to see here.
