The Republican Party is beefing up its minority outreach nationwide and preparing to put its rising Latino stars on the campaign trail amid concerns that tough immigration rhetoric in the presidential primary is taking on an increasingly anti-Hispanic tone.
But immigrant-rights groups and some political watchers say the damage may be irreversible. They argue that the GOP has severely hampered itself as it looks to woo the critical Latino voting bloc that could decide who wins key states like New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado and Florida next fall.

Oh Yeah, Tough shit.
I'd rather see more headlines like:
Anti-Welfare programs tone alienating Minorities
Anti-Terrorist tone alienating Muslims
Anti-Crime tone alienating Criminals
Anti-Homosexual tone alienating Sodomites
I'd rather be right than allow myself to be extorted by the enemy for their vote. It's way past time to put our line in the sand. Screw them all.
Maybe its because you are in a border state with a large legal historical Hispanic population. But move into the interior of the country like Memphis, TN and almost all of them support illegals.
25 years ago, there was very little hispanic presence in Memphis. Now we have Spanish language radio stations and they are everywhere. A large percentage speak no or little English.
Do I need to mention how far from the border Memphis is? Tens of thousands live here now. Most are from Mexico and tell you they don’t want to assimilate. Hell, at my job, we had so many who couldn’t speak English (illegals) at one time, that to get a promotion you had to be bi-lingual. WTF???
We later got raided by Social Security 3 years in a row over fake SS numbers and now the percentage has dropped from 75% hispanic to 25%. I haven’t seen the bi-lingual requirement in the past 5 years, as most now speak some English.
I think it’s because most of them where you live ARE illegal aliens. The ancestors of the Hispanics who live where I currently live came here with Francisco Vásquez de Coronado and stayed.
“and those same white liberals live in affluent white neighborhoods..liberals are not only evil, they should be put to pasture”
Make that “put under the pasture”
Geez, how slow some people are getting it!
They mention a few key states, but the fact is that most states have a lot of illegals and some don’t want to get rid of them. When there was plenty of fed & state aid, there were a lot of reasons to keep them (imported pork, so to speak); now, they’ve proven to be a huge drain on local governments that are flat-out broke. Last week someone posted a story about California trying to root out its underground economy; guess someone let the cat out of the bag that illegals don’t pay state income taxes, often live in housing units on which property taxes aren’t assessed, and oh yeah, they cost billions of dollars and shut down your emergency rooms.
“And I guess we should just ignore that 90%+ of the illegals are hispanic, mainly Mexican.”
Here in NJ it seems most of our “Hispanic” illegals are South American (Brazilian, Peruvian, Ecuadoran), while many others are Asians. Until a few years ago I’d never met a Mexican; they started showing up just as the demand for them was drying up (either the Americans started cutting their own grass, or the bank took the house from them anyway).
First started seeing the Mexicans in NYC around '94, with the peak influx being 94-01. Many of the folks you see in North Jersey were priced out of NYC.
BTW: My Brazilian wife takes umbrage at being called "Hispanic," and will sic her paisanos (same word) in Kearny on you. ;)
This comes out every 4 years: the Republican Party is commiting significant resources to “reach out” to Hispanics, Eskimos, native Americans, blacks, etc., etc.
When are they going to “reach out” to conservatives? We want a “seat at the table”, too. (To throw in just one more hackneyed phrase.)
Study after study has shown that the Republicans win when they increase their percentage of the white vote, regardless of how the minority vote breaks out; when their percentage of the white vote decreases, they lose. But because they’re the Stupid Party, they haven’t quite figured that one out yet.
Doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result . . . .
A lot of my Portuguese classmates in high school became “Hispanic” when it was time to apply for colleges. I think the only phrase for describing Brazilians other than “Brazilian” is “South Americans” (which includes Hispanics, as well as Guyanese - from all 3 “Guyanas”).
My wife was born in Montevideo (she’s a Spaniard); ask your wife about the “Maracanazo”.
: )
