South Carolina Primary (email from Senator Jim DeMint 1/16/2012)
Team DeMint Website; My email ^ | January 16, 2012 | Jim DeMint

Posted on 01/16/2012 6:02:16 AM PST by snippy_about_it

Fellow Patriots:

The presidential primary in South Carolina has intensified and my name is being tossed around a lot.

I have complimented several of our candidates when they spoke out on conservative issues, but the media has suggested that I favor one over the others. I'm writing today to make sure you know exactly where I stand.

I do not have a favorite in this race and I will not endorse a candidate.

I've gotten to know each of the candidates over the past year and they are all far superior to Obama. My view reflects what I've heard from Republican voters across South Carolina who remain divided in this race.

For those of you in South Carolina, I encourage you to watch the Fox News debate tonight and vote this Saturday for the candidate you believe will fight the hardest to stop the massive spending, bailouts, and debt that are bankrupting our country. We need a president with the courage to tell Americans that our government must do less, not more.

The 2012 elections could be our last chance to restore America's greatness so we must defeat President Obama and elect more conservative leaders to the House and Senate.

Please continue to pray for our country and the year ahead. Our future depends on it.

For Freedom,

Jim DeMint United States Senator

I’m pretty sure she was talking about the Fox News national poll that shows Romney at 40%, and Gingrich at 14%.

RCP has that poll on their list.

[I’ve heard from Republican voters across South Carolina who remain divided in this race.]

Why doesn’t he just finish his quote by adding...”I’ll let you know when they have made up my mind for me”

Good Lord, I’m getting so sick of the ‘political lap dancers’ in the Republican Party who stand by the side of road and watch the Romney parade march on by to victory in South Carolina.

South Carolina is going to be, as it has been, the bell weather state and it’s going to determine if a moderate or a Conservative is chosen to be our nominee.

The ‘self proclaimed’ Conservatives who don’t have the courage to get behind a proven Conservative BEFORE the voting starts in South Carolina should be sent to political wilderness where they belong.

I should have added that in the Fox poll, Santorum has 15%, so it is a national poll that suggests Santorum is leading Gingrich nationally, in case someone wants to argue that the 3rd-place guy should drop out now and support the conservative with the most chance of winning.

Depressing thing about Fox poll is you believe polls: You add up all the conservatives AND the quasi-conservatives (Santorum/Perry, Gingrich/Paul) and you don’t get to 50%. You do barely beat Romney/Hunstman though.

There’s also a recent Gallup Tracking poll that closely mirrors the Fox News poll:

ROmney 39%, GIngrich 13%, Santorum 14%. Again in that poll, all the “conservatives” together don’t hit 50%, and they only beat Romney/Huntsman by 3%.

The conservatives have managed to destroy each other. The village is burned, where is the hero that was supposed to stand on the ashes and save us?

Now that we have taken EVERY conservative, and every substitute for a conservative, and pushed them to the heights in the polls, and watched them crash and burn — explain again why we don’t support Rick Perry, who has executive experience and a 10-year record of conservative principles in action?

Sure, he’s not polling well, but NOBODY is.

What is the relevance of a national poll to the South Carolina primary?

Romney 29%; Gingrich 25%

Whatever happens in South Carolina will determine Florida and then the national polls.

Charles please. Just admit it. You are very happy to see Willard in the front of any poll.

He may not have endorsed a candidate, but he didn't reject Romney either.

Bad sign.

DeMint has been concentrating on his PAC supporting conservatives for Senate seats . . .

This is exactly what we need. Even if the GOP ends up as a RINO as presidential nominee and even if said RINO edges Obozo, the strongest defense at this point is a more conservative Senate which won't rubber stamp RINO or Communist left appointments.

If Romney hits 39% in a six-way race in SC (maybe 5 if Huntsman pulls out), you can cancel the rest of the primaries. I’ll also eat my hat in front of the BiLo Center.

Who ran this poll anyway, Baghdad Bob Polling LLC?

And methinks CharlesWayneCT is a troll.

I didn’t say it was relevant. I was pointing out the possibility that Laura wasn’t referencing the internet poll.

On the contrary, I’m disgusted with how conservatives have discarded one conservative after another looking for their “perfect” conservative, only to settle on Gingrich, a guy nobody thought was a good choice back in May, when we still were thinking.

Not that it matters, it seems Gingrich has no more luck hanging on to support than anybody else — live by the sword, die by the sword. In fact, Gingrich HAD a chance, because he had managed to come to the front by a positive message and attacks on Obama. I can’t say he could have maintained his lead that way — he’s not recently a very conservative candidate. But clearly becoming the attack dog didn’t help him keep and grow his constituency.

Sad thing is, we had a solid conservative with a decade of executive experience who was LEADING ROMNEY in the polls nationally, and competing in dozens of states. But he wasn’t “sufficiently conservative”, so he was trashed mercilessly, and attacked viciously at the debates, and mocked when he couldn’t give answer for trivial items of no importance.

Not saying Perry was the right choice — just that many of the arguments for Gingrich now applied equally to Perry in August — he was beating Romney in the polls.

You could justify the difference in treatment by the late hour — we “didn’t have time” to keep looking. Except then Santorum won Iowa and beat Gingrich in NH and was coming on strong in South Carolina, and he certainly was more conservative than Gingrich, so the argument used for Gingrich should have applied to Santorum. instead, we went back to trashing conservatives for imperfect fealty to the conservative cause.

Which is fine if Gingrich can actually WIN. Makes no difference for me — I can’t vote for Perry, Gingrich, OR Santorum right now. But I’d be happy to vote for Gingrich for President if I could, if that is what we pick. I just don’t see Gingrich winning a nomination. I could be wrong. I also don’t see him beating Obama. I could be wrong.

As to “happy for Romney to be ahead in polls” — that argument became stale the moment I watched dozens of Freepers cheering when Perry lost his lead over Romney in the polls.

THose are national polls, not south carolina polls. I said that in the comments. SOmeone thought Laura was making up poll numbers, and I was pointing out she was likely referencing the Fox national poll, not a south carolina poll.
