Nancy Pelosi: GOP knows Mitt Romney can’t win

By: Seung Min Kim January 17, 2012 10:51 AM EST

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday launched political grenades at Mitt Romney, arguing that Republicans haven’t coalesced behind the GOP frontrunner because they don’t believe he can beat President Barack Obama in November.

The House’s top Democrat repeatedly jabbed at the former Massachusetts governor during an hour-long interview hosted by POLITICO and taunted the GOP for a slate of presidential contenders that she said was “not exactly what you would call the first string of the Republican Party.”

“If the far right thought that Romney could win, they might be more enthusiastic about him,” Pelosi told POLITICO’s Mike Allen during Tuesday’s Playbook Breakfast. “But they question what he stands for and they don’t think he’s going to win. So what’s the sell? I’m not sure he knows what he stands for, and that makes it harder too.”

“I don’t know who knows him,” she added of Romney. “Does he know him?”

When asked about Romney’s vow to veto the DREAM Act if he were president, Pelosi said that showed he lacked an “understanding” of policies that would not only help young illegal immigrants but bolster the United States’s competitiveness in a global economy.

“He’s not going to be president,” Pelosi said. “But I think it’s indicative of a hard line that doesn’t seem consistent with who he was as governor.”

Don't be fooled. You only attack the one you fear. This is the Dems trying to interfere in our primary and help goad us into supporting a more vulnerable candidate with little to no appeal for moderates and independents in the General.

...appeal for moderates and independents in the General

McCain 2008 was supposed to appeal to moderates and independents too.

Romney is the strongest against Obama. Every poll shows this. The Dems know this. They want Santorum or Gingrich. I can’t believe some of you are buying this.

That’s a fair point, but McCain had several things working against him. George W. Bush was hugely unpopular, so the left was motivated like never before, the economy was undergoing severe trials, McCain didn’t attack his opponent, Obama was a novelty candidate (first AA), etc. There are huge differences in the political climate. This may not change our analysis of who we would rather represent us in terms of ideology - perhaps we’d rather go to battle with Gingrich at the helm anyway - but I don’t think it can be reasonably argued that Romney isn’t the stronger candidate in the General, and the Dems know it.

And Nancy proves that she’s Not actually as Stupid as she wants us to Think she is. With her kind, it’s all about Plausible Deniability. They’re not actually responsible for the damage they do because We’re supposed to Think it’s a matter of incompetene.

What this pronouncement from her proves, is that their Sgt Shultze defense is BS.

They’re Not that stupid after all. They’re EVIL.

Swamp, Mitt is WAY, WAY worse than John McCain. Romney is legislatively a more successful version of Bill Clinton !

1. Clinton could only get a 10 year assault weapons ban passed, ROMNEY SIGNED A PERMANENT BAN IN 2004 !

2. Clinton could barely get "Don't ask don't tell" instituted, ROMNEY WAS GOVERNOR OF THE FIRST STATE TO LEGALIZE GAY MARRIAGE !

3. Hillary's health care summit failed. ROMNEY CHAMPIONED COMMIE ROMNEYCARE AS GOVERNOR !

The list goes on and on.

I won't vote for Romney any more than I would vote for Clinton....EVEN MORE SO, COME WHAT MAY !!

She and the Dems know the reason we have not supported Romney is that he is NOT A CONSERVATIVE.. He is closer to Obama than a conservative. This by Pelosi is actually meant to help Romney..

Pelosi may not be lying. She may just misread us or simply does not understand conservatism. After all, liberals have no core values and will do anything for power. She is simply projecting her values onto us.

However, you are right. We don't support Romney because we think he would be like Obama in some areas. He is not conservative enough for us. In the last debate he seemed very conservative but we don't trust him to mean it.

I agree with her, too. They know he can’t win and that’s why they want him as their nominee. They sure don’t want some guy supported by the tea party. They might lose some of their perks.

The opposite is the case. That Obama would beat Romney is at the moment my only consolation for the immanent disaster of a Romney nomination. A Romney presidency would be worse than four more years of Obama for the conservative movement. And please don't lecture me about the conservative judges that a president Romney would never appoint anyway, or the ObamaCare legislation that a president Romney would never repeal.

Yes, I think all of our candidates will be far more aggressive this time around. All of them have shown themselves willing to take on their opponents, unlike McCain.
