Gingrich Daughter's Teen Work May Have Violated Law

By Eve Tahmincioglu During the Republican presidential debate this week, Newt Gingrich shared a story about how his daughter worked as a church janitor when she was only 13.

“I was actually proud of my clean bathrooms,” Jackie Gingrich Cushman said in an telephone interview Tuesday, referring to the janitorial job she held at the First Baptist Church in Carrollton, Ga., in the early 1980s. “I learned work has value.”

But that work may have been a violation of federal child labor laws that her father has denounced as “stupid.”

Cushman was 13 when she took the part-time, minimum-wage janitorial job, scrubbing bathrooms two days a week using cleaning supplies and a bucket. She said working as a janitor was a "great experience." Asked if she was working legally as a janitor for the church, Cushman said, "I certainly hope so."

But based on child labor laws in effect now and in the 1980s, 13-year-olds are not allowed to hold janitorial jobs, said Michael Hancock, assistant administrator for policy in the wage and hour division of the U.S. Department of Labor.

Newt’s moving up in the polls.

Yep. And if he gets the nomination, whoa baby. While Hussein hides his history, Newt will undergo cavity searches.

Personally I don't think there should be any such lawa!!

I violated them 60 years ago working on construction but I was smart enough to keep my mouth shut!

Government shouldn't be allowed to deny a person the right to make a living at whatever they want to do.

If I want to jeopardize my life it's my business and no one elses.

I've always lived by the premise if it saves time and I have a 50% chance of survival I do it government be damned!!!!!

These odious rats remind me of the "do-gooders" in Babylon who couldn't wait to rat out Daniel for violating the king's decree, the decree they suggested in the first place, in order find excuse to heave Daniel into the lions' den.

>>>assistant administrator for policy in the wage and hour division of the U.S. Department of Labor<<<

Good Lord. Exhibit A for bloated government leech positions. This guy needs real work. Toss him a toilet brush.

I reread it also....Read Brave New World next. It is all coming true-—and they have the little kids all preforming sex acts by age 5 or maybe younger and we now have the disgusting Jerry Brown trying to sexual 5 year olds and putting anal sex into their minds to destroy their morality and corrupt their thinking.

Very disgusting. Egalitarianism is totally disgusting-—and has to be complete slavery to keep everyone equal. People don’t know how sick Marxist ideology truly is-—they think it is “utopia”.

Nope—it is vast boredom and destruction of all biological connections. Think of it-—children don’t have a loving mother-—and father-—they have no humanity. They are owned by the state. They are like ants.

Think about your happiest memories....it is always about people you love and freedom.

I BEGGED to be allowed to walk beans when I was in first & second grade. You see, the crew Dad hired was composed of HS Cheerleaders...I thought they were so cool with their bikinis & suntans! He finally complied, and allowed me to walk, assigning me one row..and of course no sharp knife like the older girls carried to cut down the big weeds.

By the time I was a little older we (me and several friends) were riding on seats on a bar on the front of a tractor (no seatbelts), and spraying the weeds with Round-up. It was colored with a purple dye so you could see that you had hit the weed with enough agent to kill it. By the end of each day, we had ever better tans and completely purple feet (CALL HAZMAT!!).

Of course, the major danger was from Dad who was driving the tractor. After a few hours, we had a tendency to nod off a bit...he took care of that by throwing empty pop cans at our heads.

Excerpt:

Mortimer, author of Working and Growing Up In America...

"... In addition to displacing adult workers, it would “likely expose teens to difficult, and possibly hazardous, work conditions, lots of bending and lifting... etc."

So some young football aged kid is more likely to strain his back than a 67 year old nearing retirement?

Have the schools outlawed school wrestling too? We don't want Little Johnny hurting himself...

This is just another example of outlandish, mindless, and gratuitous Federal overreach. What provision of the Constitution’s enumerated powers could possibly be stretched to cover who can and can’t clean out a bathroom in a church?

Now that they’re going after Newt’s family members, he could be home free on Saturday.
