Showing real bottle: The extreme training endured by China's first female bodyguards

With her face grimacing in unbearable discomfort, this is the moment a trainee bodyguard has a bottle smashed over her head.

Amazingly, the recruit has to stand there and take it if she wants to qualify as one of China's first female bodyguards.

The training session, which took place in Beijing, involved 20 women, most of whom are university graduates.

Extreme methods: An instructor smashes a bottle over a female recruit's head during a training session for China's first female bodyguards in Beijing

The four-week programme is run by trainers from Tianjiao Special Guard Consultant Ltd and is the first open group training for female bodyguards in China.

Each trainee goes through ten months of instruction to develop her skills in reconnaissance, anti-terrorism training, martial arts and business etiquette.

The best individual from the class is also invited to study further at the International Security Academy in Israel.

With the booming economy in China and increasing wealth sparked by high demand for Chinese goods and materials, demand for bodyguard services had risen dramatically on the Chinese mainland.

Graduates of bodyguard courses can look forward to a well-paid career if they are recruited by wealthy businessmen.

That is especially the case for women, who are in high demand because they are less visible than their male counterparts and because they can assume roles such as secretary or nanny.

Female bodyguards are often paid far better than male counterparts - up to $100 a day - because they can adopt these different roles. The average annual wage in China is just $1,500.

Why does the Chinese trainee (brakee?) have a German flag insignia on the right arm of her cammies?

I would rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

That's a damn good question.

You know what? I THINK I now know the answer.

Looking at the other images from the articles webpage, I see Chinese girls in Norwegian camo with Norwegian flags on the sleeves, in addition to the German flags on the girls wearing German desert camo.

In short, looks like someone forgot (or neglected) to cut out the national flag insignia from surplus cammo uniforms.

Notice how these girls are all very pretty? They aren’t really being hired for protection.

Where are all the anti-waterboarders to scream “This is torture!”?

I’m pretty sure hitting someone with a real bottle would kill them. A million westerns not withstanding.

Well, I see where you're going. Maybe. But here's the rationale per the story:

That is especially the case for women, who are in high demand because they are less visible than their male counterparts and because they can assume roles such as secretary or nanny. Female bodyguards are often paid far better than male counterparts - up to $100 a day - because they can adopt these different roles. The average annual wage in China is just $1,500. The boom in China has also seen a rise in the growth of wealthy women, who prefer female bodyguards because their presence does not raise questions of potential relationships.

You are proving my point. NO one would pay these little girls more than a real body guard. What these girls really are is playthings for rich guys who have wives that don’t allow mistresses. They have training and they are hired as bodyguards and that is their cover story.

I disagree. If they were just being hired as mistresses, they would not need the training.

They need to look like a secretary, aide, or mistress. It defeats the whole purpose if they obviously could not be anything other than a bodyguard.

The Chinese probably make the bottles made of thin candy used in Hollywood Westerns. Ditto the clear candy Hollywood "windowpanes" that actors get thrown through with no injuries.
