Gingrich lead expands on final night (Newt up by 9)
PPP ^ | January 21 2012 | PPP

Raleigh, N.C. – Newt Gingrich heads into South Carolina election day as the clear front runner in the state: he's now polling at 37% to 28% for Mitt Romney, 16% for Rick Santorum, and 14% for Ron Paul. Gingrich's lead has actually increased in the wake of his ex-wife's controversial interview with ABC. Although one night poll results should always be interpreted with caution, he led the final night of the field period by a 40-26 margin. One thing that continues to work to his advantage are the debates. 60% of primary voters report having watched the one last night, and Gingrich has a 46-23 lead with those folks. The other reason his ex-wife's interview isn't causing him much trouble is that there's a lot of skepticism about it. Only 31% of voters say they think her accusations are true while 35% think they are false and 34% are unsure. 51% of voters say that they have 'no concerns' about what came out in the interview. The skepticism of Republican voters toward the media is helping Gingrich as well. Just 14% of likely voters have a generally favorable opinion of the media, while 77% view it negatively. Gingrich's attacks on the media have clearly played well with the party base. Gingrich is leading with pretty much every key segment of the Republican electorate. He's up 41-21 on Romney and Santorum with Evangelicals, he has a 52-18 advantage on Romney with Tea Partiers, he leads Santorum 44-21 with 'very conservative' voters with Romney at 20%, and he's up 39-26 with men. “Newt Gingrich looks like the clear favorite now in tomorrow’s primary,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “There was a thought that his ex-wife’s interview could stop his momentum in South Carolina, but instead it seems to have reinforced his support. He’s winning with all the key groups that determine the winners and losers in Palmetto state GOP politics.” PPP surveyed 1,540 likely Republican primary voters from January 18 th to 20th. The margin of error for the survey is +/-2.5%. This poll was not paid for or authorized by any campaign or political organization. PPP surveys are conducted through automated telephone interviews. PPP is a Democratic polling company, but polling expert Nate Silver of the New York Times found that its surveys in 2010 actually exhibited a slight bias toward Republican candidate

My apologies :-)
I did know it was a fair amount of books but not almost two dozen.

btw, the area you grew up in IL used to be my old stomping grounds. I worked in Arlington Heights for fourteen years ('86-2000) and patronized some of the 'finer Lounges' in those suburbs after work ;-)

I suggest you read my comments again. I said we don’t have a pure conservative. Never have, never will. We’re all human with human foibles. If purity was my goal, I sure wouldn’t be supporting Newt.

Never underestimate the power of the Republican establishment to steal elections as well as the Democrats. In the 1996 primaries, when Pat Buchanan was running against Bob Dole, Pat was leading in the polls in S. Carolina, and the exit polls on all the networks had him winning. But when the votes were counted the count showed Bob Dole as the winner. The networks were scratching their heads as to how their exit polls could be wrong. Pat Buchanan later commented that the primary states where you voted by voting machine, there was chicanery in the vote count. In the states where paper ballots were used, he won. I wouildn’t be surprised to see that happen here again tonight.

[What is Rush’s take on the race and the candidates?]

Rush has been a mixed bag lately. Win Newt got out in front in Iowa, he was loud and proud that the conservatives were beginning to coalesce around Newt. He had a real good program about the “long knives” coming out for Newt.

Lately he has been uncharacteristically muted with respect to some of Newt's progress, and actually seemed to be defending Romney against some of the callers. Some have accused him of being reined in because Bain has a significant investment in Clear Channel.

I personally haven't made up my mind what is going on with Rush, but the last 2 or 3 weeks, he's been off his game.

Don't you love it when you hear a line about a Republican in a movie that has nothing to do with politics? For example, in the movie "You've Got Mail," Meg Ryan says to her soon-to-be ex-boyfriend, "Wait... don't tell me she's a Republican??" (sneer of disgust) Greg Kinnear, laughing and shaking his head, "I know. I can't help myself!" Ryan, "Oh God!"

Or at the beginning of the movie "Hanging Up," Meg Ryan (what is it with her?) is having a conversation on her cell phone. "Well, you know, he's a Republican..." Person on other line, disgusted, "Oh jeez...." Ryan, "Yeah, I know."

So just substitute the word "Turd" for "Republican" or "Conservative" in any Hollywood movie and you get the gist of it. Then they have the nerve to tell us we're just too sensitive.

I have such a hatred for those scumbags it is borderline unhealthy.

If by work the system you mean he can get coporations to support Newt's earmarks and crony capitalism then yes that is what I mean. Heck I know loads of guys who run comapnies, me included and a $500,000 line of credit at the bank would be assume, but at a jewelery store?

What private sector did he do? Think Tank Newt, give me a break. The buyers are folks seeking insider deals with government, not citizens buying Newt at the grocery store or asking him to repair thier plumbing>

Well I have been a fincancial contributor at FR for years, a vet that served and I think speaking my mind in a sensable way is not the same as being a troll. Thanks for your warning

As of this date I have no dog in the fight, not because someone is a great candiate and I am waiting for them or anything else, I am like Rush, let the primaries do their job. As a Texan I was proud to dislike Rick Perry and folks called me a Perry hater, but he was a terrible candidate, he was when he ran in TX but his competition was worse.

Now, if Santorum also moved up as Romney fades, that would make it a perfect day.

Looks like you get your wish! Santorum DID move up! Do did Mr.Newt!

Current count - 73% counted

Newt 41%
Mitt 27%
Rick 18%
RonP 13%
It seems likely the final will be very similar. Major difference is that the percentages for Santorum and Paul are reversed in the actual count. Probably some self-selection going on there that favors RPaul (similar to the internet "polls".)
