PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (AP) — Rick Santorum is tired, almost broke — and going home.

The former Pennsylvania senator is taking a pause from Florida campaigning just days before the Tuesday primary that even he expects to deal him a third consecutive loss.

If Santorum drops out, I doubt he will make an endorsement.

I also wouldn’t be all that sure his 12% would go to Newt.

So why press him about dropping out?

Problem we have is that the two frontrunners share some of the same flaws. When they go after each other it only magnifies what those flaws are.

What a mess.

I just watched the first hour of the CNN debate last evening, but I thought Santorum had an excellent debate. He didn't sound so squeaky as in previous debates. If I had to select today [my state primary isn't until late May, so it is probably moot], I would lean toward Santorum. Romney is too much of slickster and Gingrich is too erratic and 'grandiose'. Paul has some good domestic policies, but his foreign policy is completely unrealistic.

I don't see Romney or Gingrich or Paul or even Santorum being able to defeat the MSM/Dem/Obama machine. They still have several months to make Obama look good. [I haven't seen any polls to see whether Obama got a bump after the SOTU. But, his popularity is still in the mid-40s, so he is within the 'win' range after polishing and manipulating things like job numbers and the economy.]

I know if someone wanted my tax return I'd have to open the safe to get it out so I don't find it unusual or a sign of a bankrupt campaign that he is going home to get his tax documents.

You might need to do it. I would ask my wife to go get it. Somebody like Santorum would just need to phone his accountant and ask him to FedEx the returns. Don't buy it, lame excuse for why he's leaving.

I’ll tell you what Newt stands for.. the only chance in hell of Romney not being the nominee.. Santorum’s record is never challenged in debates because he is a threat to nobody including Ron Paul who will beat him in Florida

you can’t do worse than coming in 4th out of 4

Why would any conservative ever want this guy on the ticket?

Why would any Republican want this guy?

Rick Santorum lost his home state in a landslide. This guy would not even be able to deliver Pennsylvania in 2012. Rick Santorum is not only a loser, he is a BIG loser. He lost re-election in Pennsylvania by 20 points! If a 20 point loser is your best hope, then you are in trouble.

On a cost per vote received, Santorum blows them all out of the water. Romney spent $132 per vote in Iowa versus Santorum’s $15 per voter, and Santorum still won. Gingrich spent $29 per vote in Iowa.

More would go to Newt than would go to Romney, which would be a net gain for Newt.

I agree!

Get out now, Rick. Have the courage that Perry has and put your country before yourself!

I wish it were so. I saw a poll the other night that had Obammy's job approval at 50+%, "personal approval" at 70+%. This is ridiculous. This bum has spent the country into bankruptcy yet a majority, perhaps a sizable one, of our idiot fellow citizens still like the guy. After the media finishes its suck-up job, my guess is Obama will be in the 60+% job approval range. No one is going to beat him then. We're so very, very screwed...

It’s not going to happen.

“He pledged to continue his campaign regardless of the Florida outcome.”

Santorum is in this for himself, his sweater vests, and referring to himself as “we.”

Actually, Rick Santorum won the crucial debate last night, making both Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney look small and petty for their continuing childish bickering against each other!!! I could care less about what Newt or Mitt did in the past!!! It means nothing!!! Why should Santorum withdraw??? Both Gingrich & Romney are making fools and butt heads out of themselves, while allowing “America Hater/Destroyer” Obama to lie, without serious challenge, unfettered!!! Our country is at stake, as is the future of our children and grandchildren!!! I want “our” candidate for POTUS that does nothing but beating the living daylight out of “Destroy America” Obama and his “dirt bag” Democrat Party!!! So...IMHO, Santorum should hang in there, at least until the other two “Idiots” come to their senses and get inot the real world!!!

This advice for Florida Republican Primarty voters. Please.....turnout and vote on Primary Day next Tuesday in Florida. Who you cast your ballots for, matters not a hoot to me, be it, Gingrich, Romney, Santroum or Paul. Believe me, it is your voting that counts!!! In 2008, you turned out to vote to the tune of 1.9 million voters. Please make that number this year between at least 2.5-3.0 millions votes, if not more (Four Million Eligible Primary Voters)!!! THANKS!!!

I wish I would have kept a scorecard of how many times he went to Mr. Romney / Governor FIRST. It was way too many times.

Your wife couldn't do that for you? You wouldn't trust her with the combination to that safe?

If you're a serious candidate, you don't stop campaigning in the state where the primary is just days away unless there's no point in staying.

What a BS “news” article! It sounds like it was written by a member of GOProud. It claims he is broke in the title then says almost broke. It claims he is heading home but then admits he is coming right back. It claims he lost 3 states in a row when he actually won Iowa. It claims he is way back in the polls in Florida but does not mention the latest NBC poll out this morning showing him pulling ahead of Paul and only 10 points behind Romney. Poll also shows he does better head to head against Obama in Florida than Newt does.

I have a feeling this “reporter” is the type who throws glitter on conservatives and licks their doorknobs to try and get them sick.

tired and broke from doing what?

handing all the psuedoconservatives in the party a strawman victory and likely helping reelect Obama?

Were the roles reversed I would be urging Newt to drop out

We must stop Romney

Ultimately Newt has to save himself. If Romney wins it won’t just be because Santorum split the vote but because Newt allowed such an opportunity to open up.

LOL. Santorum wins the debate, and so the media trashes him with “tired and broke” the next morning. He sure didn’t look tired last night.
