Across the river in Illinois, it's that time of year again--time for the push for extremist 'gun control' laws. Right on schedule, three were introduced yesterday.
First, we have HB 1294. This bill would ban so-called "assault weapons," .50 caliber rifles and ammunition, and magazines capable of holding 11 or more rounds of ammunition. The ban extends to possessing, buying/selling, and manufacturing--so long to the tax revenue and good jobs provided by companies like Rock River Arms, Armalite, D.S Arms, and probably others. What's more, the law would be confiscatory:
Provides that these provisions do not apply to a person who possessed a prohibited weapon, device, or attachment before the effective date of this amendatory Act if the person has provided proof of ownership to the Department of State Police within 90 days after the effective date of this amendatory Act.
Who keeps sales receipts for every rifle, magazine, and round of .50 caliber ammo? Representative Edward Acevedo (more on him in a minute) has introduced identical legislation for years now (at least as far back as 2005)--he is passionately anti-rights.
Next up is HB 1599. This one builds on HB 1294, by making an Unlawful Use of Weapons charge more serious (making a crime "more illegaller," as we gun rights advocates like to say), if the offender is in possession of an "assault weapon" or "high capacity ammunition(?)" at the time of the offense. What, pray tell, is "high capacity ammunition"? Good question. The answer, on the other hand, is not so good:
"High capacity ammunition" means ammunition of 50 or more caliber.
Not only is that bizarre use of the term "high capacity," blogger Thirdpower notes that the definition makes no distinction between rifle and pistol ammunition on the one hand, and shotgun shells

It is crazy to set up a huge expensive bureaucratic system, require everyone to jump though hoops and prove that they are *not* criminals in order to try, ineffectively, to prevent the few individuals who are not responsible, from having legal access to guns. This is a failed paradigm, and it should be abandoned. To accept the idea that the all gun sales should be monitored by the government, and only allowed to those it deems satisfactory is fundamentally wrong.
The entire idea of the enterprise has always been the death of a thousand cuts, where the restrictions on who can buy, and where, and how and what are continually increased until the number of gun owners is reduced to political insignificance.
.50 cal..... that is for pikers... I just saw a video with a guy that made and was firing a .94 cal. rifle..... now there is a nice little squirrel gun!!!
Lack of Constitutionality aside, the Bill appears to have been written by an imbecile.

California banned .50 caliber rifles a few years back - thank you, Arnold Kennedy...err, Scwerzenemall.
Why? Because someone might shoot down an airliner with a single shot from a .50 caliber rifle.
That doesn't just exclude the big .50 BMG round. It also bars the Desert Eagle .50 Action Express handgun round, and the Smith & Wesson .500 S&W Magnum revolver cartridge.
You forgot .50 caliber black powder muzzle-loaders.
Why? Because someone might shoot down an airliner with a single shot from a .50 caliber rifle.
The best part of that whole fiasco was that Ronnie Barrett made a public statement that Barrett Firearms would no longer sell to, support, nor service any Barrett rifle owned by any municipality or state law enforcement agency in CA as a result.

I was watching History Channel and they were covering the Pacific War and there were numerous scenes of Japanese kamikaze planes attacking the American fleets.
Thousands of guns were firing thousands of rounds of ammunition at these relatively slow moving planes and, tragically, to little effect.
But I’m supposed to believe that a modern airliner with multiple redundant safety systems on board can be shot down by a single .50 caliber round.
Yeah, right.

BTW, it would be a .50 BMG necked down to 49.5 with a 500+ grn bullet.
Yea. Deer slugs can do a lot of damage.
