Gingrich Maintaining Grip on New Lead [Gallup national daily tracking poll]
Gallup ^ | Jan 27, 2012 | by Lydia Saad

"Romney slumps to 24%, his lowest level since before Iowa caucuses"

PRINCETON, NJ -- Republican registered voters nationally continue to prefer Newt Gingrich over Mitt Romney for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination, with no sign in Gallup Daily tracking from Jan. 22-26 that Gingrich is giving back any of his recent gains.

The 32% of Republican voters now choosing Gingrich as the candidate they are most likely to support for the nomination is his highest level of support since the 2012 primary voting began in early January. The 24% supporting Romney is his lowest. Despite the heavy media focus on the two front-runners, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum are each holding their own at just under 15%, putting the two men in a statistical tie for third.

Bottom Line

As the Jan. 31 Florida primary nears, Gingrich remains at the top of the GOP field in national Republican preferences for the nomination, and his eight-percentage-point lead over Romney, in second place, is his widest since mid-December.

Gingrich's latest eclipsing of Romney occurred in Gallup Daily tracking from Jan. 19-23. That interviewing period spanned the South Carolina debate, as well as the South Carolina primary, which Gingrich handily won. Since then, Gingrich has not only maintained the lead but expanded it slightly, indicating that Romney's sharpened rhetoric, combined with various attacks on Gingrich by such major Republican Party figures as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Bob Dole, hasn't been particularly harmful.

Santorum has a bee up his arse and won’t drop out.
He honestly thinks he can still win this!

I wish Newt and his team would call Little Ricky and ask to sit down with him over the weekend for a little “talk” for the sake of ..oh, Let’s just say: THE COUNTRY!!! FREEDOM!! OUR FUTURE!! What’s the harm in trying?

Time to take one for the team, Rick. Please.
You can be H and HS Secretary.
Okay, Sec.of State... but that’s our best offer.

Florida can no longer be considered a “Southern State”. Way too many north transplants that that have taken over the state. Newt would still win there if he had the money to compete and may still pull it out. If Palin endorses him before primary date that would be a big plus. With Santorum out of the race Newt would beat the liberal Romney by 15 or more points.

But, with that said, Romney the liberal WILL NOT WIN ANY SOUTHERN STATE. Aint gonna happen. If he does buy the Florida primary with his negative ads, he still has not won a Southern State and never will. Payback for Newt will be the REAL SOUTH.

-- Romney ads are still going on today about Gingrich being GUILTY, fined & kicked out of his speakership in disgrace. --

Do those ads conclude with Romney saying "I'm Mitt Romney, and I approved this ad."?

Santorum was on fire last night. Is it known who he'll throw his support for?

I really hope Gingrich begins talking more about cutting government spending and what the American people can and will do with less government. He's alluded to these ideas including a mention last night. But if Gingrich really means to basically privatize the space program, for instance, he needed to put Santorum and Paul in their place and serve notice to the American people that he's talking about CUTTING NASA in particular (which seemed a reasonable implication) and GOVERNMENT in general.

-- I don't think Santorum has any intention of bowing out. --

I do. The questions are when, and whether he'll throw his support to a specific candidate. He won;t bow out before the 31st of January, I don't think, but he might on February 1st.

I can't stand that idiot slimy smile!

None of the other candidates look like that when one of the others is talking.

We just have to get this country destroying Marxist out of office. He's killing us! We just found out he's cancelled another Northrop Grumann contract that will cost more jobs (in favor of an inefficient manned, WWII aircraft). Times are getting desperate!

I’ve seen no evidence of Santorum bowing out. In fact, all of his statements say otherwise. He’s going to caucus states, like yours.

UGH. Sorry to hear about that. CA is all but done and finished. I finally gave up my CA voter registration to vote in the personhood election here. I despise Romney. Refuse to vote for him. This state votes on Super Tuesday. I’m certain Romney won’t win this state.

His public statements aren't useful as a guide. All the candidates say they are "all in" until one day, they are suspending campaign activity. The evidence that he'll suspend within the next 2-3 weeks is basically embedded in his ballot performance and his campaign's financial condition. He's leaving FL before Tuesday, for non-emergency reasons.

Ron Paul is planning to come to Maine before next Tuesday. I haven't found any statement of Santorum intent or schedule.
