Beijing Customers Can Buy Knives Only With ID Card

Customers in large supermarkets of Beijing has to show their ID cards to buy knives from Saturday, Chinese Fachi wanbao newspaper reported.

The requirement to register all knives' buyers has been initiated by city's public security agencies. From now on a customer who wants to buy a knife or any other blade has to tell supermarket's special officer his or her name, ID card number, home address and purposes of knife use.

Supermarkets are prohibited to sell knives to teenagers and people with 'unusual and abnormal' behavior. If such categories of citizens want to buy knives, supermarket managers must call the police.

The requirement has been already in force in city's largest supermarket chains, while owners of small shops in the Chinese capital do not register the customers, the paper said.

The reason to tighten knives sale procedure is unknown. Previously ban on the sale of knives was introduced in Beijing during the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China in October 2009.

There is already a thriving black market in China. This law is probably there just so they can throw disfavored vendors into the clink, it will have zero effect on who can buy a knife.

I guess no one owns a grinder or metal files.

It is easy to make a decent knife.

Even with very soft steel it well work well for a short time .

bluntknife
Style of table knife introduced by an English lord in the late 17th century. He didn't want his dinner guests to get any bad ideas while handling sharp pointy things at the table. Govt. simply can't go far enough when it comes to protecting us from ourselves.

Given that the ChingChongChicom regime is no longer concerned about hiding its deep paranoia, one wonders what proportion of the red army and the various security forces can be relied upon to resist the mass uprisings which are just around the corner. Once those uprisings spread through the littoral provinces and cities, it’s going to be Katie bar the door, particularly when a few high profile army commanders refuse to slaughter civilians. And once it starts, even visits and cajolery from Joey Biden won’t stop it. Pass the popcorn please.

And toothbrushes!

Some of the best shivs are sharpened toothbrushes.

And ice picks.

Get poked by one those and you’ve got about 15 minutes to get to a hospital.

Don’t ask me how I know that. My lawyer has told me to not talk about it.

Since they are making most of the cheap knives in the world, I doubt this is enforceable. It does give an excuse to arrest people if they want to like even the vague knife laws in the USA do. If I have a locking 4 inch blade it is a pocketknife to most officers for I don't pose a threat, if some crackhead has one in his pocket it is a concealed weapon charge.

Do they require IDs to vote? I’m trying to calibrate this news by analogy to US practices.

They don't vote the way Americans do. There is no general election. However, they all have ID’s. It would be strange if a communist country does not issue national ID to everybody. It is the foundation of state control.

Call it a harbinger.

I've heard, from conspiracy theorists who believe that China is a testing ground for government control experiments, that if they work they get exported.

When I was there it was very common for people to lay out a blanket with various things for sale on city sidewalks. It was common for me to walk by people selling knives, not eating knives, weapons, along with those ninja throwing star things and other type weapons.
