Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Wednesday that he's "not concerned about the very poor" because they have an "ample safety net" and he's focused instead on relieving the suffering of middle-class people hit hard by the bad economy.
In comments likely to become fodder for his critics, Romney emphasized, "You can focus on the very poor, that's not my focus."
He brought up the subject of the poor in a CNN interview marking his big win in Florida's GOP primary Tuesday night, a major step toward becoming the party's challenger to President Barack Obama in the fall....

In comments likely to become fodder for his critics, Romney emphasized, "You can focus on the very poor, that's not my focus."The establishment wanted him. The establishment can have him. Were Romney to get hit by a meteor while standing knee-deep in water trying to blow-dry his hair during a thunder storm I would not observe a moment of silence.
Well talk about self destruction. What was that “they” have been saying about Newt again?
This is what he said:
“I’m not concerned about the very poor.” he said Wednesday. “We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I’ll fix it. I’m not concerned about the very rich. They’re doing just fine. I’m concerned about the very heart of America, the 90-95 percent of Americans who right now are struggling.”
The entire statement was fine. You just took a small part out of context.
Well shucks, he’s just lost the very poor republican demographic vote.
The statement was clearly taken out of context.
But then that is Romney’s MO when dealing with Newt and other conservative candidates. This sound bite will be used by the Obama team in the same way that Romney has used sound bites to defeat Newt.
So stupid. He should have said that he cares about the poor and he is acutely concerned that they are being forced into welfare dependency which leads to an unhealthy, unproductive and unvirtuous life.
Wow. This guy does not get conservativism and it really shows.
We are going to lose with mittens as nominee because too many conservatives will stay home.
Anyone notice or is is just me, that every Romney defender who has called Limbaugh goes on and on about how conservative he is, then adds “those people who don’t like Romney because he is mormon” and it always comes out that they are also mormon.
Yeah, and we know that the Democrats will be fair between now and November if he’s the nominee and put it in its proper context, instead of playing the statement in the headline over and over again. Right? Hahahahahaha! ARE YOU HIGH?!
****We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, Ill fix it.****
Exactly how would that ‘fix’ work - without taking more money from the working tax-payers? Conservatives call that unconstitutional income redistribution - Marxists call it ‘from each according to his ability to each according to his need’.
Romney - another food-stamp president
Suggested ad for Gingrich to high-light Romney’s true color -
Start - ‘Romney - another food-stamp president’
Next - sound clip from Romney: ‘I don’t care about the very poor. They have safety-nets...’
Voice: Yes! Romney, just like obama, will keep and expand all the ‘safety nets’ for the ‘very poor’, rather than create jobs for all, inluding jobs for the ‘very poor’, so they can take care of and feed themselves, instead of relying on government and taxpayers to take care of and feed them.
Vote for Romney and you vote for another food-stamp president.’
Message sent - Romney = obama.
This should also take care of the preceived racial element in the ‘food-stamp president’ language.
Good grief. Another brilliant quote, to go along with “I like to fire people,” “corporations are people, my friend,” and all the other examples like the proposed $10,000 bet with Perry. And what was the thing about Romney telling an unemployed gent something like “I know what it’s like to get a pink slip?” And how his $350,000 speaking income “isn’t a lot of money.” Even if some of these things are taken out-of-context, they are still a vivid window into Romney’s mentality.
And THIS is who the loathesome GOP-E think is electable, whom the voters will flock to? The one person they’ve firebombed the whole grassroots/Tea Party in order to push? This aloof, arrogant POS??? The whole Republican Party will rightly deserve to be obliterated to dust for putting this guy up as nominee.
Bingo!!!! Winner, winner, chicken dinner!!!
Palm to face....
as will Obama and minions.....
He should be. If they become extinct, he’ll have to eat chicken.
Seriously, send that to Gingrich!
No the entire statement was NOT fine.
~It is also not fine that he moved tax money to santurary cities while Govenor of Mass.
~It is NOT fine that he ONLY attacks other nominees while not talking about why he should be the nominee.
~It is NOT fine that he flip flops on abortion, taxes, immigration and everything else.
~It is NOT fine that he gets caught in ‘misrepresentations’ and doesn’t even have the decency to take responsibility for them (Rick S. winning Iowa and Rommney unwilling to admit, or Romney’s ad attacking Newt that he said wasn’t his, but when pointed out on live Debate that it was- still wouldn’t accept responsibility).
For the above and many other reasons~ Romney is NOT fine. Not as the GOP nominee, not as a representitive of the US, and certainly not as POTUS. We already have one lying, thieving, scam artist in the WH, I for one am not ‘fine’ with helping another just like him in.
This statement is only possible from a Mormon point of view.
You would not hear a Christian word it like that.
I do not have the animosity to Mitt that many do. But he makes a major mistake by not looking at how truly rotten is the so called "safety net," today.
The “Safety Net” should be other members of ones’ extended family.
Bumper Sticker Fodder
Nope, he’s not conservative, and that’s why he can’t articulate it.
I do... sympathize? with his position, in a way, though.
I’m sick and tired of the left trotting out “the poor” as an excuse to raise taxes, grow government, and reduce our freedom,
when they already have so many “programs” that there is no excuse for any single one of them to be homeless, hungry, thirsty, cold or hot. They get all their needs taken care of at our expense. We have to forego our “wants” to take care of their needs so that they can spend their money on their wants.

Except Mitt, instead of saying we should improve the economy so they can get a job if they want to improve themselves, instead said we should make their safety net even better if 'needed.'
I said Im not concerned about the very poor that have a safety net, but if it has holes in it, I will repair them,” he said.
Obama is for keeping the poor on the (taxpayer funded) safety net rather than providing an environment that allows economic growth resulting in jobs for the poor so they can pull themselves out of poverty. Is Romney capable of articulating a conservative thought? Conservatism raises the standard of living for everybody: poor, middle class, and yes even rich!
Obama is a statist who is just fine keeping the poor enslaved on the government plantation!
If you want to attack Romney, go ahead. I don't care.
Mitt doesn’t have the fire in the belly to take it to the left in a manner such as I stated in that post.
If you want to talk about the safety net part of the statement, that’s fine with me. I said the “don’t care about the really poor” was taken out of context and that wasn’t what he meant.
Poor Willard - he was born with a silver foot in his mouth.
He is a fraud!
A real conservative, like Allen west, understands that the safety net is to be used as a springboard that propels you back onto the economic ladder, not a hammock, used to keep you at the trough for the explicit purpose ensuring your loyalty in the next election.
His comments were spot on. Romney was dead right about this.
I know this wasn't posted to me ... but, do you think Obama's campaign is going to run the whole quote or the "I'm not concerned about the very poor" part. Ya think they might tack that statement onto "I like to fire people"?
What do you think the Obama campaign is going to do with: "I bet you $10,000"? Huh?
Seriously, enough with the "out of context BS". Who cares. The Dimms almost have their dream come true--they're going to run Obama against not only a rich elitist, but one who supports Obamacare, too!
I just read your post. Wow. Great minds really do think alike! :^D
The establishment wanted him, because they knew they could destroy him at will.
I was not defending Romney’s positions on abortion etc. I was merely saying that the statement was taken out of context and that was not what he meant.
The problem you have is with Romney himself, and on many points I agree with you. I was referring to this statement and the complete statement is fine and small part in the title was taken out of context.
I don't get it...the GOP wants Obama to be re-elected????
No, it is not out of context. I am a conservative. I care a lot about the very poor. That is why I am a conservative. Liberalism destroys everything it touches. The Great Society welfare programs do nothing to help the poor get out of poverty! Neither does Obamneycare!
More proof that Romney is a big goverment statist.
Mitt represents the ‘Marie Antoinette’ wing of the republican party.
It will not enhance his electability when the chips are down.
agreed- not a Romney fan but he hit the nail on the head with this one-
its those of us suckers that live within our means, work 5/6/7 days a week, 50/60 hours a week, pay our bills on time, pay or taxes on time and make ends meet that pay for the “poor” many who have ipads/iphones/ithis&that all along getting free health insurance and checks from the gov’t and won’t/won’t work because getting the free stuff is easier...free stuff which i, you and the rest of the middle class pay for....
This was the main thing he was saying:
“Im concerned about the very heart of America, the 90-95 percent of Americans who right now are struggling.
He said he wasn’t concerned with the very poor because they have a safety net.
I said that taking a small part of the statement out of context did not reflect what he actually said. If you want to argue he communicated the point poorly, that’s fine.
