Conservative opponents of Mitt Romney are nervous. If Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich continue to battle for the primarys non-Romney, non-libertarian slot, the former Massachusetts governor could coast toward the GOP convention as the indubitable front-runner....

Not surprising. NRO is full of RINOs, and Santorum is a RINO. They’re the perfect fit.
I went to see what all the hoohah is about. I don’t see much to get excited over.
I suspect they wanted shots of each man facing the other. I actually think the photo of Newt is pretty good. He has a slight smile that makes him look about as friendly as Newt can be without looking goofy. I don’t see a sneer at all.
I will agree that the photo is a little dark and that may be intended as a subliminal image, but that’s politics, my man
Gingrich... dark, evil, ominous. Threatening.
Santorum... happy little puppy dog.
That’s what those two pictures say to ME.
You are correct, some people have discovered what happens in a primary. People get to vote for who they wish.
Thats what those two pictures say to ME.

And that's the latest strategy of the GOP-e. They can't positively add to their support in red states, so they need to split the conservative vote in those states to allow Mitt to win those states with a plurality. Right now, Newt represents the biggest threat to Mittens and continued GOP-e control of the party, so the GOP-e will continue to use overt AND SUBLIMINAL attacks on Newt.
But I guarantee that if Santorum were the bigger threat to Willard and continued GOP-e control of the party, you would be seeing stories shrieking about "What kind of father subjects an extremely ill child to unhealthy situations on the campaign trail??" or "What kind of father wastes his time on a doomed and quixotic presidential campaign when he could be at home spending quality time with a terminally ill child???"
Santorum looks worse.
It'll be Chris Christie's "turn."
Bank it!
Perhaps, but Palin not running didn’t affect anyone else. SHe didn’t prevent anyone else from doing the legwork and laying the groundwork. Didn’t stop anyone else from running or preparing. Besides, all the experts and those in the know said from the moment she resigned in July 2009 that she wasn’t running and would never run, so it’s not like her decision was unexpected or a surprise or anything. Everyone knew or should have known for 2 years that she wasn’t going to run. She gave them enough of a warning.
I also think Huckabee not running was a factor. Huckabee would have won IA easily and likely won SC easily as well. He’d have been less of a target than Newt and I think conservatives would have gotten behind him to stop Romney. He’d have won in FL and been the heavy favorite right about now. I bet he’s kicking himself that he didn’t run.
And, we also have to admit that we need candidates to run good campaigns or at least campaigns free of huge blunders and gaffes. We can’t have candidates that we find out had multiple sexual harrasment settlements and were giving money to a “mistress” for years including well into the campaign itself. We can’t have a guy who struggles at putting sentences together, insults the base on a major issue, and then can’t even remember the 3 agencies he wants to eliminate and has the worst debate gaffe of all time. We can’t have someone whose last political act was getting blown out in a key swing state by 20 pts despite being a 2 term incumbent(the worst loss by an incumbent Senator in US history) and who is on record as being against contraception among other positions. We can’t be reduced to pinning all our hopes on a guy who has been out of office and hasn’t campaigned/run in an election for 15 years, not to mention never ran in an election outisde his home district in GA, who has been married 3 times and has a record as an adulterer/cheater, and has all the other baggage Newt has.
So, finding a solid candidate, and having him or her start preparing right away to unify the base and prevent situation like this year and in 08 where the base is split 4 or 5 ways for too long, is really the key going forward

Unless you live in one of the 46 states that have primaries after February 1, then you get a choice of the Establishment's pre-selected candidate and nutjob Ron Paul.
Whooopee!
And if that's my primary choice in April, I'm voting for the nutjob to protest against the Establishment.
I’m convinced that Santorum is in the race to prevent Newt from winning. I think he’s made some behind the scene deals.
Correct ! Vote for whom you wish.
Adding Huckabee to the race would have split the social conservative vote with Santorum, making Romney the big winner in Iowa. In South Carolina the evangelicals could have followed Santorum, but didn't and stuck with Gingrich. Huckabee's presence in South Carolina would have had little effect other than splitting or absorbing Santorum's 9%.
You know I didn’t really pay much attention to Santorum in the pictures, but that is my usual stance on Santorum anyway.
He’s always reminded me of the school nerd, thirty years later.

But it's hardly a "choice" then, right?
Other than the obvious Geddy Lee/Alex Lifeson line - "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice."
Which of the candidates is a phantom fear and which one is kindness that can kill?
As Canadians - what do they know anyway?

Which of the pictures did you think was sneering? GIngrich looked presidential and thoughtful; Santorum had a kind of half-smile expression that seemed more off-putting to me.
Of course, Gingrich is never going to look “as good” as Santorum, even if you run a picture of him from 20 years ago.
“Theyre just trying to stir up trouble between Gingrich and Santorum, in order to help Mitt.”
It seems to be working, sadly.
I agree. They should have used the muffin picture; it’s so cute.
P.S. It’s not like Gingrich himself didn’t “stir it up” by demanding (twice) that Santorum drop out of the race.
