Yes, it is wrong. The ONLY EMP susceptible devices are those connected to very long wires that can transmit the pulse over time. An EMP pulse is extreme short in duration and relatively weak, therefore it takes a very long wire to gather enough voltage from an EMP pulse and transmit it to a connected device. Hence, the ONLY EMP victims have been long wire devices.

Here’s a puzzle for you: If EMP “kills all thing electrical and electronic” (As EMP prophecies claim) how, years before the discovery of EMP, did we use electronics and electrical devices to gather information on nuclear events? We had seismographs, cameras, nanometers, voltmeters, ammeters, Geiger counters, X-Ray spectrometers, naval ships with RF radios, electrical generation systems, light bulbs, you name it, there were all kinds of sensitive electronic equipment, yet, … they worked. They recorded all kinds of nuclear and non-nuclear measurements. How was that possible since EMP is supposed to destroy all things electrical and electronic?

Well we are starting to get technical here but I'll play.

On the surface of the Earth the EMP effects are limited to a few radius of the blast for several reason. First there is lots of atmosphere at the surface so free high energy photons (gamma rays) and the high energy electrons they generate are quickly absorbed by collisions with atmospheric molecules. Second surface blasts are not focused and directed along the Earths magnetic field lines. Eargo because of 1 and 2 and the line of sight thing the EMP affects are limited with surface blasts.

Except for things connected only to batteries . . .

isn’t everything connected to long wires?

Code, the EMP devices (the ones geared for EMP attack) work not simply by the convention broad-spectrum pulse of a nuclear warhead, but by preferential dissipation of the energy into gamma rays, which cause induced currents via Compton scattering in the upper atmosphere.

Quoting from myself on another thread, and tracing back:

Please reconsider.

As I wrote on this thread:

Read this and associated links.

All you need is a small fission device: it is the gamma ray flux which causes Compton scattering (electrons knocked out of the atoms / molecules in the upper atmosphere) which travel at relativistic speeds, and interact with the Earth's magnetic field.

The design of the bomb, and the casing, can enhance the proportion of the weapon's energy which is released as gamma radiation: and by designing the case properly one can focus the gamma rays "downward" to the ground.

A fission weapon, according to these sources, will still be quite a good source of EMP: it is not directly a function of notional yield.

Cheers!
