GOP voters belie Gingrich’s claim to conservative mantle
Washington Times ^ | 02/05/2012 | Seth Mclaughlin

Newt Gingrich says he is the conservative choice in the 2012 presidential race, but five states into the campaign, Mitt Romney has won more self-identified conservative voters, according to an analysis by The Washington Times of entrance and exit polls.

Mr. Romney capped off that showing with a win in Nevada that included support from a majority of self-identified conservatives, a feat neither Mr. Gingrich nor the other two remaining candidates have been able to accomplish.

“He may be more conservative than Romney, but that does not mean that he is winning over more conservative voters,” said Mark Rozell, a political science professor at George Mason University. “The primary voters are not aligning themselves solely on the basis of ideology. They are looking as well to electability, character, leadership ability, among other factors. So being to the right of the front-runner is not enough to convince conservative voters to pick a Gingrich.”

They think he’s the one with a measure of “electability.” Like I mentioned on another thread, on election night, Romney will be giving his concession speech before the polls close in Mountain Time Zone states.

It won’t even be close.

Then the “fun” really begins.

I don’t believe anything that comes from the media during this election cycle. It’s another attempt to sell Mitt, nothing more.

Mitt Romney: Thank you. Thank you, my friends. (Cheers, applause.) Thank you for coming here on this beautiful Massachusetts evening. (Cheers, applause.)

My friends, we have — we have come to the end of a long journey. The American people have spoken, and they have spoken clearly. A little while ago, I had the honor of calling President Barack Obama — (boos) — to congratulate him — (boos) — please — to congratulate him on being reelected the president of the country that we both love.

In a contest as long and difficult as this campaign has been, his success alone commands my respect for his ability and perseverance. But that he managed to do so by inspiring the hopes of so many millions of Americans who had once wrongly believed that they had little at stake or little influence in the election of an American president is something I deeply admire and commend him for achieving.

I think the good professor is just slinging propaganda but I will say this, I was amazed that more Evangelicals in SC voted for LDS Bishop Romney than for Gingrich.

It is not for lack of trying not to. Conservatives bounced from candidate to candidate...anyone but Romney. Ultimately, when it was down to the final 4, some are choosing Romney out of practicality...and realism that the other guys probably aren’t best suited for the general election. You have the entire media, RNC Party elite, and tens of millions focused on getting votes for Romney. Those have an impact.

IMO, when Perry went down for the count in the FL debate, it was likely Romney’s for the taking. Only Perry had the resume to be most electable, except he proved he was incapable of campaigning and debating effectively.

I’d say!!!! Correct me if I am wrong, but didn’t he just win 2 primaries that he was supposed to win? Didn’t Santorum beat him in one he was said to have won but actually didn’t? This doesn’t really sound like a “slam dunk” to me. I think you are on the right trail but I believe that the media is trying to pick our candidate for us (with the blessing of the RNC) and at the same time are testing their impact on us.( since we caught on to them during the 2008 Obama campaign)

There is NO excuse for a “Conservative” to support Romney.

Mitt Romney LOOKS more Presidential than Newt Gingrich.

That’s it.

Newt is a brilliant guy, but he holds WAY too many grudges, like Nixon.

Mitt Romney is more like Thomas E. Dewey, who thought that simply because he WASN’T a Democrat, he would be the easy winner in 1948.

So Dewey stopped even trying to campaign a couple weeks before the election, thinking he could coast home.

Mitt has already started coasting.

The Mormons who were polled said they considered themselves as strong conservatives so that should be in the mix.

You're right! That's it!. Mitt the twit will win because even though he'll never go after obama, will ignore any issues that he can slam der Fuehrer on, and isn't in any way a conservative; HE HAS EXECUTIVE HAIR! He can buy the nomination and looks good doing it so he is the one. What a load!

I don’t think “conservatives” are selling out. The problem is what true conservatives are trying to sell. Newt.

Newt is a known commodity and too many people out there don’t particularly have a very good view of him.

If we had a really good conservative candidate, Romney would not be in the lead.

It isn’t really that people are jazzed for Romney. They just hate Obama and aren’t very happy with any of the choices on the GOP side.

It is a darn shame.

I started thinking this way when ABC dropped the supposed Maryanne Gingrich bomb the night before the SC debates. I don’t know if Romney or the RNC had anything to do with it ( can’t say either way). Same thing happened to Cain. It sure looked like the liberal media was flexing it’s muscle and don’t think they won’t do the same to anyone running against Obama. I would imagine that they have already spent a lot of money on attack ads on Romney under the assumption that he will be the nominee. All that is left now is to make it so.

Just BRAINWASHING 101. Politics for DUMMIES.

After Super Tuesday, things will be different. Newt will emerge on top, and the milk-toast voters will go along, (man I hate those types).

Newt knows what he is doing, I have no doubt about that. Evidence being that just this morning there have been numerous articles out about how "Newt is quitting", this one, and I read one other I can't think of, all to DEPRESS us.

Mitts camp is PANICKED now, no more easy pickings states, now he has to actually try to sell his ILK to the BIBLE BELT voters, who by the way detest the lying mormonISM.

I'm sure MITT will try another method for us (flip-flop). lol
