Navy names USS Gabrielle Giffords
The Hill ^ | 2/10/12 | Daniel Strauss and Jeremy Herb

The Secretary of the Navy announced on Friday that a new littoral combat ship will be named after former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).

The announcement comes the same day that President Obama signed the last piece of legislation sponsored by Giffords, a bill aimed at reducing drug trafficking along the American borders with Canada and Mexico.

Giffords, who recently stepped down from office, was the target of a shooting rampage in early January 2011.

“The name this ship bears and the story represented by that name will inspire all those who come in contact with her,” said Navy Secretary Ray Mabus at a naming ceremony at the Pentagon Friday.

Giffords appeared at the ceremony with her husband, former Rep. Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) and Roxanna Green, the mother of Christina Taylor-Green, the 9-year-old girl who was killed at the Giffords shooting last year.

Mabus said that Green would be the sponsor of the USS Gabrielle Giffords.

The ship named after Giffords is a littoral combat ship, a smaller ship designed for operations close to the shore. The USS Gabrielle Giffords is the Navy’s 10th LCS ship.

If you think the other branches are more than just a step or two behind the Navy in this respect, think again.

If anything, it should be named for the little girl who died taking a bullet meant for Giffords. If Giffords was a decent human being, she would refuse this “honor”.

How politically correct can you get.

A libtard extremist gunman shoots a liberal congresswoman because in his opinion she’s not liberal ENOUGH for him, and so we name a ship after her?!?

How effing ridiculous. And not to mention milking her condition.

Man who would ever want to serve on a ship named for her?

all the military has gone like that.
We now have Generals etc getting promoted not based on merit but based on where they stand political wise.

We have far too many in the supply lines in the army who only join to get VA loans, free school etc
We have far too many joining the Navy, who want their freebies like free school.

When don’t ask came up the Marines stood up for what was right.

We had a couple of years ago some Navy ships and coastguard come in to JAX

I have never seen such utter crap than when saw some of those sailors, they had dirty boots, uniform not pressed, unshaven

That should have been sending to the brig offense when on public duty.
We were on a ship and one sailor did not know what a prism compass was and had no clue that it was on the bridge where my kid asked what was that.

There was the rights printed on the board, WTH

Some sailors and soldiers were so fat, and all the women were too.
When I asked a group of black overweight woman couple of questions about the ship I got, hur hur for a reply, what happened to yes sir

One elderly guy walked away disgusted and this group of women just muttered about him and then all laughed

This was all on public duty

Get rid of PC first and foremost and if those who want their free school etc want to join then let them but they have to do a longer service to earn it

Post of the decade!

Oh it is! Such a good post, I was about to put in a DING, DING, DING.

But an equally good rejoiner is Kozak's point:

That would have to be a submarine.

Really? Really? They couldn’t find a heroic war veteran to name it after? This dog and pony show is about taking our guns. Gifford is the new poster girl for their cause. Make no mistake about it.

thought this was a joke at first.
Imagine being the others who lost loved ones. How will they feel that this woman who sadly took a round in the head feel that they lost loved ones and are not mentioned like Giffords.

Anyway the way we’re going we’ll be lucky if any new ships are built.

Of all those who have risked their lives flight 93 to those serving and have died saving lives to the border agent they choose her and for what, what did she do that was so heroic?

It is high time we got rid of PC because it is destroying this country

we heard swearing, saw hands in pockets, it was not too long ago I served and we would never have been allowed to act like that or dress like that.

On public duty we had a brass shined, boots like glass, uniform pressed really well and we were all inspected before the public saw us.
Everything we had looked shiny and clean.

However we did go on one small coast guard ship and they were excellent, very well mannered, very professional

Doesn’t surprise me. Todays sailor might find themselves sailing into harms way on the USS Cesar Chavez.

There was a USS Boxer aircraft carrier. The current USS Boxer (LHD-4) is the sixth U S warship to carry that name.
