The Whispers in the Loggia blog (WITL) has obtained a bishops-only internal briefing that was circulated soon after President Obama’s announcement of his HHS regulation “compromise.”...what follows “is the text of tonight’s internal, bishops-only briefing, obtained by Whispers and signed by the aforementioned quintet: the conference president, Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan of New York, and the bench’s committee chairs for Pro-Life Activities, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston; Doctrine, Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington; Domestic Policy, Bishop Stephen Blaire of Stockton, and the newly-formed arm on Religious Liberty, Bishop William Lori of Bridgeport.” Here is the briefing:

President Obama called our USCCB president, Cardinal-Designate Dolan, to tell him that significant changes would be made in the final federal rule in an effort to accommodate our concerns about the religious freedom of our institutions. He outlined these changes, and said the Administration would be in further dialogue with religious organizations to work out the questions that remain unanswered. He said White House officials were willing to meet with us to discuss the issue further.

Now the muzzie in chief is calling the Church and letting them know how magnanimous he is.

The Administration has indicated it is retaining the narrow, four-pronged exemption for “religious employers” such as churches and houses of worship. There is a serious concern that the four-pronged exemption would become a precedent for other regulations. However, it will also offer a new policy covering “non-exempt” religious organizations such as charities and hospitals. Our concern remains strong that the government is creating its own definitions of who is “religious enough” for full protection

Not only NO, but HELL no.

Folks, we have a full blown communist DICTATOR in the White Hut.

I can happily report that throughout history, the Church’s true and supernatural strength rises when she is most challenged and weakened.

To the extent the personal sins of clergy and bishops has contributed to this HHS showdown (as well as any other crisis in the Church), we can also note that where sin abounds grace abounds all the more.

May we all accept the Divine Mercy He offers to us!

If Obama wasn’t against religion, he wouldn’t be spending his free time on Sunday playing golf.

It remains to be seen how many prominent Catholic clerics and lay people Obama will be able to suborn. If history is a guide, he will succeed well enough to have the names trumpeted by the media and undermine Catholic resistance. This has been the pattern on the healthcare legislation and elsewhere when he picked off institutions such as AARP and corporations etc.

It might just be different this time. One can never be sure which outrage will finally awaken the latent core of decency slumbering in the American soul.

It is well understood by most of us that this is an argument ultimately over abortion which is the ultimate moral question confronting America. And it is equally understood by many of us that abortion is but a metaphor for the final Stalinist solution sought by this administration over our purses, our bodies, our brains, and our souls.

“Glad the fundamental issue is not being overlooked: “free exercise” is MY INDIVIDUAL RIGHT and it trumps some invisibly penumbral “right” to have sex without its natural consequences (as if that promise was even possible, btw).”

When sex becomes something that is considered a base biological necessity akin to eating & breathing - this is where we wind up.

The notion that sex is a behavior that can be controlled has become “outdated”

When you take away the consequences, you don’t have to deal with the underlying problem that attitudes towards sex have degenerated to such a point that the fabric of our society is unraveling.

Read post 10 carefully.

Obama is counting on the Catholic religion to get to single payer healthcare. The last thing he wants is for the bishops to comply. Getting a few hospital workers to take free contraceptives or get abortions would be such a trivial victory as to almost seem a loss.

Now comment.

Abortion is secondary.

See posts 10 and 26 for the REAL agenda.

While the Bishops are screaming to keep Catholic organisations from having to pay for Birth Control and abortificents they are forgetting that the rest of the country will be paying for it.

I say No.

I should not have to p[ay for Birth Control for anyone. If they want it they should pay themselves.

The Bishops are not doing their jobs to stop Catholic organiations from paying when they should be trying to stop anyone from paying.

Obamacare is Socialism.
You have to pass the bill to see what is in it.

Bullshyt

This wasn’t written in the bill, this came out of Sebellious’s office. What else can she put by making a regulation?

You are misinformed; see comment 12, which quotes from the bishops’ letter:

Abortion is secondary.

Abortion is primary.

It is the poison in the well.

I disagree with the summary predictions contained in replies number 10 and number 26.

First, I am convinced that Obama unquestionably wants our religious liberty because that is the core of the leftist philosophy. It is the core of The Frankfurt School whose spawn is Cloward and Piven and Saul Alinsky. There can be no socialist utopia if there are dissenters from the collective and since colonial days the Judeo-Christian heritage in America has meant the unequivocal recognition of the individual.

Second, I think the regulatory mandate is a blunder not a calculated power grab. No reasonable observer can believe that the Catholic Church will simply walk away from the vast infrastructure of hospitals and senior care etc. and abandon them to the state and not even the ideologues in the Obama administration could have been angling for that. We are talking about billions and billions of dollars worth of infrastructure at stake. I believe the bureaucracy simply didn't think much about it and assumed that the repercussions would be overridden. I do not believe they anticipated a grab of so much wealth because it would be simply abandoned to them by the Catholic Church and many evangelicals as well.

Third, we cannot clearly predict the fate of Obamacare either in the Supreme Court or in the Senate after the election. It is probable that there will not be 60 Republican senators but that does not mean that a way cannot be found to eviscerate Obamacare. Funding can simply be withheld. If Obamacare is nothing more than an unconstitutional relinquishment of article 1 congressional responsibility to legislate to regulators, it is a creature of regulation. Therefore, it can be undone by regulation.

If they cannot be explicitly repealed by legislation, four or eight years of regulation purgatory can render it impossible to revive. Equally, four or eight years with no money can render it impossible to revive.

Certainly, a substitute piece of legislation can be crafted which will give a few Democrat Senators cover to vote for a substitute healthcare reform which effectively repeals Obamacare.

No one today can predict with certainty what will happen.

What I want to know is why aren’t the insurance companies - indeed all businesses - OUTRAGED at the president ordering a private business to provide a product or service for free?! What power does the president or government have to do that? NONE!

Let me suggest that the government order movie producers to provide their movies to the public for free. Or the car companies provide their cars for free. It’s the same thing!

The government doesn’t have the power to do that and somebody has to stop them and this DICTATOR obama!.

“Catholics walked away from adoption without a fight.”

I agree. They should have stayed their ground during this mandate. An adoption agency can decide that you can't adopt because you are too old, in poor health, etc, but they can't refuse because you are living a homosexual lifestyle.

There was a case in England where the grandparents were not allow to adopt because of their age. The child was given to a homosexual couple, not related to the child. I'm sure there are cases like that here. There were two homosexual men who worked at Duke University who adopted two black kids. The police found out at least one of them was having sex with the five year old, and offering his fellow homosexuals the young boy's services on the Internet. I don't know what happened to the children. The last I heard the other man kept the children. He claimed he didn't know anything about the sexual abuse. Duke University professors never signed a petition against these men. This happened after the notorious wrongly-accused LaCrosse case.

How about this:

WHERE IN THE CONSTITUTION IS THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT GRANTED THE POWER TO LEGISLATE THE TYPE OF INSURANCE YOU MUST PROVIDE?

Sheesh - everyone is missing the point.

Exactly! He started violating the law when he took over the car company and put the union at the head of the line and gave them the company. Our laws guarantee unsecured debt holders go to the front, but instead the Obama administration put the unsecured debt holder at the front and told the courts which auto dealerships to close.

The Republicans did nothing about this outrage. Where did Santorum, Gingrich, Romney, and Paul stand on this early outrage? Now we have a car company making a product no one wants and being subsidized by the tax payers.

We, courtsey of the American voter, now have a dictator in the White house. Congress and the media are merely his puppets. Else why have they stood be silently while he shreds the Constitution time after time? If Bush had done any of the things this guy has done, Congress and the media would have howled so loud it could be heard in the outer edge of the Milky Way.

Other than this issue the bishops are for Obamacare.

Actually, the bishops are for affordable health care for all. It's not just bishops who are this naive. I find a lot of people in high-level positions -- business executives, lawyers, etc. -- tend (apparently) to use all their time and mental energy in their work and often just swallow whole the MSM take on things and consider themselves informed. Individuals, of course, may explore government, political philosophy, etc. as a personal interest in what spare time they have, but others don't.

(This probably applies to the general public, too -- but nobody goes after them for quotes.)

If journalists did their job (or even admitted openly that they are advocates rather than honest reporters), maybe there'd be a broader understanding.

After all, the conservative view seldom makes it into the MSM coverage, and when it does, it's distorted.
