The Washington state Senate has passed a bill to charge electric car owners a $100 annual fee to compensate for the lack of gas taxes they pay. Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen, the Camano Island Democrat who sponsored the bill, says while electric cars are good for the environment, they put the same wear and tear on the state's roads that gas vehicles do.
The same bill passed in the Senate last year but failed in the House.

When they came after the smokers....
Are they gonna turn around and pass a $100 fee on the drivers of gasoline-powered cars for the lack of extra electricity taxes that they DON’T pay because they DON’T have electric cars and DON’T charge them up?
They will now.
Of course - but not for road use, like motor fuels are. I'd rather see a case-by-case taxing of the fools that buy these plug-in electrics, rather than a blanket increase in everybody's utility taxes.
Yes, but the money doesn't go to any sort of highway fund like gas taxes are supposed to.
Power is somewhat fungible, but in that state hydropower probably powers them more than coal.
For God's sake stop! You're going to give them more ideas!
I think most of the power in Washington State is hydro based.
So these are salmon killing water powered cars.
ROTFL
If the average entitled dem, getting food stamps, unemployment, and a big check due to "negative taxes"...
How about a $10,000 fee to this entitled dem to compensate for the lack of payroll taxes that they would have paid if they had been earning, say, $80,000.
And what about Oregon, isn’t self-serve gas still banned there? What about gas-pumper unemployment caused by greeeeen cars?
“Here in California they fine us if we use too much water...but then when people start conserving, they raise the rates.”
And now when they are in the bag for electric cars, they are trying to get federal funds ( because California is basically broke) to remove all hydroelectric dams on the Klamath River because they are “tough” on the fish. So, less electricity in a state that doesn’t have enough, more floods because that’s what the dams control, and less water for us po folks. It all makes perfect sense doesn’t it. Sorry, gotta go now and wash my loincloth in the creek!
Wow-socialism in action!
I am sure the average driver pays much more than that in taxes.
This is just the nose of the camel under the tent.
In 5 years, it will be 1,000 a year.
And the electric car industry will be dead in WA.
Never thought about this but,
100 bucks is nothing. People pay way more than that for gas. They should charge these electric car people by the mile. The Same amount as the effective tax on Gasoline per mile. Why should they get a free ride.
The Gov't just collects them and uses them as they see fit.
Roads are low on the list, as you can see how well they are maintained.
There can’t be much electricity generated in the Klamath,
and there is something to be said for helping out the salmon.
A nuke plant sitting in Arcata could supply a lot of power.
Do plug in Hybrids pay $50?
Do people who own cars that only get 10 MPG get a Gas Tax Rebate?
That's specifically why I ended my post with the words "are supposed to".
