Pro-Romney Group Buys $500,000 In Michigan TV Ads (Newt Targeted)
NY Times ^ | February 13, 2012 | Jeremy W. Peters

Posted on 02/13/2012 3:48:30 PM PST by red flanker

Mitt Romney is getting some heavy air support in Michigan — the state where he was born and raised — as the “super PAC” supporting him invests almost $500,000 on television ads there.

According to someone who tracks Republican media spending, Restore Our Future has committed just over $470,000 for commercials starting Tuesday and set to run through Feb. 20. That marks the group’s largest purchase yet in Michigan, where it will have spent more than $700,000 on ads by next week.

The group said Monday that it would continue for now to run an ad called “Risk” that targets Newt Gingrich using images and attacks that have by now become familiar advertising fodder. It cites the proliferation of earmarks during his tenure as House speaker and shows a shot of him sitting with Nancy Pelosi on a couch in front of the Capitol, a shot taken from a public service announcement on global warming.

What’s wrong with you? Where do you get I’m trying to convert anyone? But that’s the mentality of rick supporters - just looking to be ‘charmed’.

Frankly I think you're the one working for Romney.

Horse pucky!

If Santorum was a genuine threat, the ads would be targeting him.

Newt was never a consideration for the Michigan vote so where's the rationale in running a massive campaign against him there and not the surging Santorum?

The establishment have you all right where they want you.

Romney and Santorum are their guys.

Remember Santorum was the 3rd ranking Republican when fired by PA voters. Given a choice, he chose the later traitorous Spector over conservative Toomey in the PA Republican senate primary.

Learn from history! Vet this guy inside and out before you leap on his bandwagon.

Look into his vote for Sotomayor's Circuit Court confirmation (even McCain didn't do that!), his uncharitable charity that doled out only a third of donations before folding when he lost reelection, his leadership PAC that spent more than $4 of ever $5 on itself rather than candidates, his suspect half million dollar mortgage from a major donor's private bank, his toothless proposals, his personal hypocrisy on tort reform and healthcare, his building party ties to lobbyists and his own lobbying, proposed and voted for an extra $550m in Amtrack funds above the $900m budgeted, his immigration record, his abuse of PA education tax dollars for his kids living in VA, his love of earmarks and crony capitalism, the $100m federal loan for an energy plant that was never built, his Medicare Part D and ties to GlaxoSmithKline, his interventionist foreign policy, his attitude towards working women.

Rick Santorum is a target rich environment from the Right, the Left, and in between.

Constitutional Conservatives, Tea Party Patriots, and all others should heed Sarah Palin's CPAC call to vet all the candidates.

Good summary. I’m really puzzled as to why none of this is being addressed or even mentioned. There is a certain dishonesty about Santorum that I find very disturbing, and both he and his supporters act as if it is unfair to ask any questions about him and also as if he has a special exemption from being held to normal public ethics standards.

I even saw one poster who defended Santorum’s lying about his residence so that his kids could take advantage of the home-schooling program in a PA school district while his residence was in VA (and then letting the state of PA pay the $50,000 fine assessed by the district) by saying that as a “Senator he deserved this.” I think Santorum suffers from that strange entitlement attitude that only the self-righteous (and many elected officials) have that permits them to ignore certain ethical and even legal requirements as being “for the little people,” and if he is examined more objectively, a lot more of this is going to come out.

This makes no sense. Spending money to go negative on a guy not even campaigning in Michigan who trails Romney by 15 points and leaving untouched the guy beating him in the polls by 15 points and nationally as well. His PAC should be spending money to convince folks he is “severely” conservative but then again there is not enough money in the world to make that case.

You people are simply childish little cowards who don’t have the simple courage to admit that your pathetic little hero has fallen right back to where he started.

What ads?

The fact is that you pathetic cowards are throwing another tantrum about something that isn’t even happening and is a pure rumor.

You people are dumber than particularly stupid democrats.

Its not even real. If you look at the story they never quite get around to proving it. Their source is “someone who knows”

Are you sure? Isn’t there something subliminal in things like this put out by Santorum to indicate his main target is Newt?

LOL well some apparently think so. All those pictures of Romney must hide something about Gingrich.

And for those who have the stones to watch.

I cannot find Santorum’s record of leadership in any public or private entity.

He is a blank canvas for social conservatives with his pro-life positioning and an empty vessel for fiscal conservatives who disdain his ‘earmark’ history in Congress. A mixed bag to be sure.

Most importantly, what, when and where are his leadership credentials?

——Most importantly, what, when and where are his leadership credentials?———

He has stood firm in defense of human life and against sodomite “marriage.” Remember that sodomite “marriage results in sodomites legally adopting children.

If you’ve been involved in the pro-life movement, you know that you’re battling the devil himself. Rick has courageously fought the most important battle of our age, in season and out. He can be trusted because his fundamental beliefs and priorities are sound.

His fiscal record is less stellar, but I’m confident that he will sign whatever Congress proposes, even if he doesn’t lead on economic issues.

Santorum has written one book (mostly about himself). Piggy backed on Newt’s leadership in Congress. No military experience. No private sector job creation. He has not offered any bold ideas for correcting the current crises - just parroting what he has learned from Perry, Cain, Bachmann and Newt.

He talks and says what conservatives want to hear and he’s not Romney.

Its up to us to make him a great president. This story is nothing more than another NY Times rumor anyway.

Neither Slick Willard, Rick the bleep (rhymes with Rick) or Obama will ever get my vote.

It’s either Newt or I sit this one out.

“This will force Santorum to get even tougher on Romney or be accused of being in the tank for Romney.”
____________________________

To the contrary, this does not force Santo to do anything. Santo needs to continue telling the people that freedom is on the line in this country and that That is THE issue of this election. Rick needs to keep talking about the real intrusion of govt. into people’s lives and don’t give a rat’s rear about what Mitt does or says.
Peace.

It is dejavous again -
obama, empty suit whom no one vetts, anything you want can be placed in the vague ‘hope and change’ thing.
Now, St Rick, the pro-life can-do-no-wrong whom no one will allow any vetting, whom many are struggling to project what he/she wants onto this yet another empty suit...

It is indeed tragic that the herd mentality, the need to put someone with no substance on the pedestal rules the day!

Not having learned the lesson, the herd is trying to hold on to their own version of obama - the seemingly pure saint Rick - to replace the first black Messiah.

I totally agree and there also will never be a merger (or “marriage”) of Santorum and Romney. They are water and oil together. Then, too, whoever believes what is printed in the NY Times?

"I will not vote for Romney or Santorum.
I will vote for Newt Gingrich... or I will not vote at all.
Good luck with another 4 years of Obama."

I want Newt, but still waiting for his post-SC surge. I will vote for Rick Santorum, with ease. I will NEVER vote for Romney, under any circumstance. Newt/Palin or Rick/Palin Team would be unstoppable, imo.

I’d add:

#3 - Romney (no matter if you buy it or not) is attacking Newt from the Right and it helps promote the idea of Romney as a conservative. As well, Newt won’t spend the time/$$ to hit back in Michigan so it will go unchallenged.

#4 - It’s too early to hit Santorum for the Michigan/Arizona combo. How many days did it take to pummel Newt for the FL vote? We’re two weeks out and and Santorum could fight back and have a strong counter cycle. As well the debate is on the 22nd. I’d look for a heavy anti-Santorum buy to hit from the 23rd to the 28th.
