I am for Santorum. Strongly.

I think he is the only guy left who has a chance in the general (though I will support the nominee, and do so strongly).

That said, I am really worried about this line of attack that is clearly developing, namely, that “Santorum wants to ban your contraception”.

I think the American people, especially the beloved independents (the same people that put obama there in the first place) are going to be terrified of this demagogic rhetoric. I am not confident AT ALL that the genius independents will be able to see through this. But that’s what’s coming. Plus, if the D’s manipulate the numbers enough, why, we are likely to see numbers of 7.5% unemployment come next October. If the economy is “on the rebound” according to the news media, and if Santorum has only one agenda and that is to take away everyone’s birth control, then, personally, I don’t see how obama can lose.

I am very, very worried.

I hope someone here at Free Republictherapycentral can make me feel better.

I am a strong Newt supporter, but I’ve been listening to Rush today and I think he is as concerned as you are. He has spent most of today decrying the contraception flap and trying to help Santorum out of the mess.

My theory is that Santorum stepped in it when he said off the cuff that states have the ability (or something like that) to ban contraception. The media is running with it, and I’ll bet Santorum will be asked about this numerous times during next week’s debate.

Like I said, I’m Newt person, but I’d much rather see Santorum the Romney.

Santorum would win in a landslide against Romney in MI if only Gingrich graciously withdraws from the race. Time to put conservatism ahead of personal ego. Gingrich is simply not making the sale with primary voters with his pie-in-the-sky stuff promises. The baggage he carries is so heavy its unlikely he will get any further traction except help split the conservative vote against Romney.

See what happens if Gingrich drops off: It would be worse for Romney if Gingrich pulls out. Santorum beats Romney in a landslide.

This is an excerpt from Public Policy Polling. “Rick Santorum has all the momentum in Michigan right now,” Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling, said in a press release. “But it’s important to note that more than 50 percent of voters say they could change their minds in the next two weeks. There’s a lot of room for this race to shift back toward Romney in the coming days.”

“Voters were more likely to have a favorable opinion of Santorum (67 percent) than Romney (49 percent) in the PPP poll.”

“If Gingrich dropped out of the GOP presidential nomination race, his support is more likely to flow to Santorum than Romney, the poll indicates. If just Romney, Santorum and Paul were in the race, Santorum would get 48 percent (up from 39 percent if Gingrich were in) and Romney 27 (up from 24 percent).”

I am a Newt supporter and was just making your point on contraception on another thread to a Santorum supporter who was being rather smug about suggesting Newt needed to drop out if Rick wins Michigan.

That said, I am rooting for Rick in Michigan; as he is the strongest challenge to Romney there and I hope he kicks Mitt's butt! I see it the same as Sarah Palin does: The longer both Newt and Rick can stay in the race the better the chance of defeating Romney.

It doesn’t matter who the nominee is, Obama and his surrogates will try to slime him.

They couldn’t find anything legit to slime Santorum with, so they had to invent this contraception issue.

Just think of what they would throw at Newt or Romney!

Those negative ads that Romney has in store for Rick worse compared to Romney deliberately putting his dog on top of his station wagon for their family trip ? ....
Rick won't have to paint Romney as a animal abuser, people are already doing it.

Dog's say no to Mitt.

Not that it would be good...but the foreign situation just keeps getting worse,,and THAt is one of Santorum’s strong suits, Gingrich as well.

A huge factor would be WHO Santorum picks as VP.

That’s your “crisis intervention” for the night!(I try to relax by reminding myself I just don’t have much control over this....then I just freak out again.ha)

I feel like we a backed up on the two yard line in an election we should already be in field goal range to clinch. Why is Obama at 50% approval ?

Where is our “John Elway” candidate ?

“I don’t see how obama can lose.”

I can see plenty of ways.

But what we’re talking about is some therapy, so let’s start with truth. The truth is that obama has a good chance of winning. Any incumbent has an advantage going in and people will often pick the evil they know over the evil they don’t.

That said, the Presidential race will be about the economy, and Rick actually has a bit of an advantage in this respect in that (1) he isn’t obama, and (2) he really hasn’t said a whole lot about how he would approach the problem. That gives him some flexibility in putting together a politically palatable alternative. His blue collar roots help as well; he can credibly respond to the tired canard that the GOP is the party only for the wealthy.

His weaknesses are actually more on the primary side; he is a big government Republican and that is not a good place to be with conservatives. If conservatives choose to overlook that in the primaries, then it isn’t much of a problem in the general.

The ‘rats and their allies in the media will attack Rick for his social conservatism. We already know that. If Rick is the nominee, plan on a long slog over things like contraception. All in all, I think people care more about whether they will have a roof over their head and food on the table than a candidates views on that subject, so I wouldn’t expect it to be as much of a problem as it would in good economic times.

Summary: it’s a winnable race for Rick. Not easily winnable, and not winnable if Rick does the typical GOP thing and figures out a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. But all things being equal, he would have a fair chance going into the general.

(Full disclosure: I’m in the Paul camp. But Rick would be my next choice amongst what is available.)

You are right to be worried. Santorum is extremely vulnerable to the very attack you imagine. Indeed it has already begun.
