Top GOP Senator Says ‘If Romney Loses Michigan, We Need a New Candidate’
ABC News ^ | Feb 17, 2012 | Jonathan Karl

A prominent Republican senator just told me that if Romney can’t win in Michigan, the Republican Party needs to go back to the drawing board and convince somebody new to get into the race. “If Romney cannot win Michigan, we need a new candidate,” said the senator, who has not endorsed anyone and requested anonymity. The senator believes Romney will ultimately win in Michigan but says he will publicly call for the party to find a new candidate if he does not. “We’d get killed,” the senator said if Romney manages to win the nomination after he failed to win the state in which he grew up. “He’d be too damaged,” he said. “If he can’t even win in Michigan, where his family is from, where he grew up.” What about Rick Santorum? “He’d lose 35 states,” the senator said, predicting the same fate for Newt Gingrich. It would have to be somebody else, the senator said. Who? “Jeb Bush,” the former Florida governor.

Orrin Hatch? He stated he believed Romney would be the nominee, but I cannot find an article that says he officially endorsed him.

I think someone posted awhile back that this was Jeb’s plan all along. Tacitly support Romeny knowing he’s going to fail. When he fails, swoop in and grab the nomination.

Personally, I could get behind Jeb. If his last name wasn’t Bush, he’d be considered to be a strong candidate. I can vote Jeb, Newt, or Rick - but FUMR.

Gotta wonder who the anonymous republican senator might be? McCain?

Can’t be McCain if the writer is correct in saying that Mystery Senator hasn’t endorsed anyone yet. McCain did endorse Romney, so he’s out on that score.

From the article: It would have to be somebody else, the senator said. Who? “Jeb Bush,” the former Florida governor.

Is everyone in the Senate senile?

What the hell is wrong with this party??

If Romney wins MI, then we really need a new candidate.

In other words, WE NEED A NEW CANDIDATE!!!

Remember McCain. Once he had the nomination he started talking up Obama “He’s a good man, he’ll make a good President”...

how is that for fighting?

/not

[ What it tells me is that the GOP sees Romney as their candidate against us.

They’re more worried about beating us than they are about beating Obama.

That’s pretty damn pathetic. ]

I don’t necessarily think so. I think some of them honestly believe Santorum and Newt can’t win. What the fools fail to realize is that there is no way Romney can win the general if he can’t even win the primary. Maybe they are starting to get it. I really think a conservative Governor should get in the race now. Maybe Perry ahould get back in now that it is acceptable to skip debates!

Is that pic for real? Jeb Bush doesn’t even wear a suit to meet in the White House with two Presidents? Really?

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA is right. Jeb Bush, sure, that's will get us a win. He wouldn't get a single Dem crossover and probably few if any independents. I do agree we need a new candidate. Santorum doesn't stand a chance in hell and mittens is fizzling out and would probably get more Dem votes than he would Republican. I want Newt but I don't see that happening and I am getting more and more disillusioned.

The establishment is terrified of a conservative - I love it. A moderate, RINo worked out so well for them last election (eye roll).

I will vote for any Republican, including Romney, except Jeb Bush. That would be the ultimate poke in the eye to me.

I’d like to know how a new candidate will get on the ballot in most states. That seems to be the biggest problem with running ANYONE else, let alone someone that the go-along, get-along, inside-the-Beltway, big-government RINOs want to shove down everyone’s throat.

Oh, and that would split the Party even further, making an Obama victory much more likely, if not certain. So who’s side is this nutless wonder on, anyway?
