Maryland House approves same-sex marriage

ANNAPOLIS — The House voted Friday night to approve Gov. Martin O'Malley’s same-sex marriage bill, sending the legislation to the Senate and clearing what was likely its most formidable legislative hurdle.

The chamber voted 72-67 in favor of the bill, which would make Maryland the eighth state along with the District to pass legislation allowing gay marriage.

The vote drew cheers from many visitors in the House chamber balcony and touched off a celebration among the bill’s supporters, many of whom exchanged hugs and shed tears after leaving the chamber.

“It’s an amazing day here in Maryland,” said Delegate Heather D. Mizeur, a Montgomery Democrat who is openly gay. “Our time has finally come to have love free of fear and to bring a measure of equality to every family in this state.”

The bill’s supporters reached 72 votes — one more than the 71 needed for passage in the 141-member chamber — by securing support in the past week from two Republicans and three Democrats who were formerly undecided or in opposition to the bill.

The final vote came Friday afternoon, when the House accepted an amendment to the bill proposed by Delegate Tiffany Alston, Prince George’s Democrat who withdrew her co-sponsorship of last year’s failed bill and voted against this year’s bill in a Tuesday committee vote.

Ms. Alston chose to support this year’s bill after passage of the amendment, which stipulates that a gay-marriage law would not go into effect until after any potential lawsuits over a referendum effort are resolved.

House members debated the bill for about two hours Friday night, giving impassioned speeches that ranged from defending marriage as between a man and woman to lauding gay marriage as a civil right whose time has come.

Good. Now the voice of the people will be forced to the forefront; to the extreme angst of the Left. Let them force a referendum; I’ll bet a marriage amendment passes.

by securing support in the past week from two Republicans

Sometimes I wonder what is the point of supporting the GOP. GOP votes legalize gay marriage in NY, MD, NH, and I believe WA too.

If it had to pass I am glad it passed now, when we still have time to bring it to a referendum.

Maryland may be a Dem State, but I believe we still have enough straight Marylanders to put this down in a referendum.

A for those two so called Republicans who joined this thing,

I wonder what counties they came from?

Did Stalin really say that? It doesn’t sound like something he’d have said. Do you have a source?

Once you redefine marriage as NOT being between one man and one woman, you will not be able to prevent it from being confined to just two people, or even two human beings.

There will be no legal basis to do so.

That is what comes next.

“Once you redefine marriage as NOT being between one man and one woman, you will not be able to prevent it from being confined to just two people, or even two human beings.”

It has always been a danger, at least in modern times. When the state is involved, its definition of marriage is simply going to be whatever pols, judges, or the majority think it can be at any one time. The homosexualists and statists have to be thrilled that many have been conditioned to believe that the state determines what marriage is.

What comes next is to Lose the Freedom of Religion and the Freedom of Speech. This is what happens when a society disrespects the Ten Commandments. The loss of freedoms and ultimately slavery to a dictatorship (or such) that will impose order again is required.

Just as Israel was taken to Babylon for it's sins, God has a way of dealing with wayward nations (such as ours). Returning to the Lord and Repentance is our only hope. Pray that God will Grant it. For without it, there is no hope.

This is my source: Libertytree.ca

It says there, "source: attributed" and it certainly is attributed to Stalin, but I do not believe he ever said or wrote it, and at your source there are a few other people who doubt it too! Nevertheless it is a fine quote and I may steal it and start attributing it to myself! :D

The article said if passed and signed into law, “would make Maryland the eighth state along with the District to pass legislation allowing gay marriage.” Which are the other seven states that passed legislation allowing gay marriage?

Good question. I thought most of the states had it done by judicial fiat.

However, Washington just passed SSM, and so did New Hampshire.

Also, Maine passed a SSM law, but it was overturned by the voters. New York passed a SSM law as well. So maybe not so much judicial fiat after all.
