The moment handcuffed woman, 20, was left brain dead after being Tasered for trying to escape police

A 20-year-old woman has been left brain dead - after she was Tasered by police and smacked her head on the ground. Danielle Maudsley had been taken to a Florida Highway Patrol Station after being arrested for a suspected hit-and-run in September. Handcuffed, she ran out of the door.

But as footage from a police cruiser dashboard camera reveals, Trooper Daniel Cole, who this week was cleared of any wrongdoing, fired a Taser's electric probes into her back.

She spun, fell backwards and hit her head on the ground. Bleeding and crying she tried to get up. She then blacked out and has remained unconscious ever since.

Cops are far too fond of all the battle rattle festooning their belts, and far too quick to use it. At the very minimum this fat slob, who should have chased her down, should be charged with manslaughter or negligent homicide. If he’s too fat or out of shape to pursue an handcuffed suspect he should be fired or permanently reassigned to dispatch or custodial duties (oh, sorry, union contract won’t allow I’m sure).

Yes, falling unprotected on the back of your head on concrete because you are tazed and have no motor ability didn’t cause her brain swelling and ultimate death.. No... not at all.

She was on foot.

She was on foot when arrest was attempted. The hit and run happened some time prior and there was a warrant. She thought she was special and immune from laws and common decency and accountability. Didn’t work out though

Do your duty as a citizen and lobby your representative to make drug use, car theft, and hit and run punnishable by death.

Good luck.

No one punished her with this. She caused it.

You could apply the same logic if he had pulled his pistol and blown her brains out. In this case I think the cop failed to use the discretion that we've a right to expect from those to whom we assign such powers.

She was administered the death penalty without the benefits of due process.

Of course she didn’t forsee that consequence of her actions. She clearly did not intend to fall and hit her head and be in a coma and brain dead...she intended to escape.

She was breaking the law while so doing. She had evaded arrest for months and was now ready to get out and do it some more...already having shown she was a danger to others around her.

The policeman used non-lethal force to stop her.

Her hitting her head was a tragedy, but it was not the police officers fault.

You may have served, and if you did in combat or anywhere where you might have to physically subdue an enemy or criminal, then you know there is significant additional danger in so doing.

To wrestle this girl down on the run opens up the possibility that he could be injured while so doing, that she could perhaps somehow get his gun out of the holster during the scuffle, etc., etc.

I addition, as much bigger as he was than she, he could easily have injured her in that scuffle as well.

The taser was the much less dangerous option at the time and he used it.

I will not second guess him. I was not there.

I will not pass judgement on him, and get into some kind of high school name calling on him. Again, I was not there.

You do not know his record and neither do I. You do not know his attitude, and neither do I.

It’s easy to pass judgement...particularly with a video to make a snap judgement, but in my experience it is rarely advisable, even with the video.

If he is tried civilly, a jury will decide, as it should what his civil level of culpability is. Butt they will see a WHOLE lot more evidence than we are seeing.

Yes, I have been on FR, and for a long time (14 years) long enough to know exactly who was responsible for this...and it was not the LEO. He did his job and his duty with a criminal who was now felony escape.

It was a tragedy she fell as she did...but it was a tragedy of her own making...after several very bad choices on her part, which she made (and she made each and every one of them) that led her there.

"Poor baby. They should have just let her go. Everything would be fine in the world if they did. sarc"

its all about PROPORTIONALITY....proportional reaction to the event...

a hit and run incident months before, and they just arrested her ?...

its not like she was accused of kidnapping, raping, and murdering a child that morning...or that she had been on a murder spree...or if the perp was accused of serial rapes and murders....

she was brought in months after a hit and run....

she was of no immediate danger....

most likely, she was a druggie or mentally or psychologically challenged..I have no idea why she tried the stupid action of trying to run...

but does not give a fat slob cop the to taser her....with hands cuffed, she couldn't run very far and he had to know that she would fall ackwardly to the road...

not saying he should have been convicted....not at all...he didn't make her brain dead on purpose..but his lack of judgement is what I question.

look the govt agencies are now in a position to go after ANYBODY in this fashion....send your little child to school with the wrong food...have too much ammo at home...fly your confederate flag....go on the internet too much to the right wing wacko sites...

we better reign in their power where the next time it could be us they go after..

She’s brain dead, the cop killed her, yes, her body isn’t dead yet, but she’s effectively dead thanks to the cops actions.

NO one is arguing her decision to run was smart, it was a stupid decision. However she isn’t brain dead because of that, she’s brain dead because a fat ass lazy cop used a tazer when he should not have. This guy did not even bother trying, he just tazed her, he had to cover less than 3 feet to have a hand on her, he wasn’t even willing to try. This cop has culpability here, both legally and morally, and he and his district will be paying out big $$ thanks to his stupidity and laziness.

Yes, folks die every day, and folks are killed by others every day, this woman was killed by this cop, yes, he didn’t plan on killing her, but he did. If he had chased her down and tackled her, and she hit her head, I’d be with the argument you are trying to make, but he didn’t do that, he chose to use a tazer for what should have been a little bit of effort.

This guys actions disgraced true hard working cops everywhere, and honestly if you are too damned lazy to even break into a run to do your job, you have no business being a cop.

Since you stick by the perp then, you can maybe pay her hit and run victim. I don’t have an ounce of sympathy for the brain dead hit and run perp who was attempting to run a second time. If the cop had tackled her and bruised her fragile ego you’d be bitching about brutality

I certainly hope that your child or mother does not become drunk & belligerent from hypoglycemia-diabetes and get executed by a lazy stupid leo for not responding fast enough to a lawful order. But if it did happen I expect you might change your opinion about who was the responsible party for their death. Please don’t post anymore crap like this.

My observation is that most police today are over weight ,and too inclined to use deadly force rather than exert themselves;the switch to prefer deadly force over [physically subduing suspects came about with the female officers on patrol who simply haven’t the upper body strength and size to risk physical battles.I note the Iniana State Police seem to insist on keeping in better shape than the county and city departments. One almost never sees a local officer outside his luxurious cruiser except at the doughnut counter of the cnnvenience stores! SERIOUSLY.

Society and its members keep paying heavy prices for artificial promotions and willful disregard of known economic, biological, and scientific facts.

Yes, they will make sure he won’t face a criminal trial, but he’s going to face civil trial and lose, as will their district. A tazer is a weapon, pure and simple. If this guy had grabbed his billy club and started beating this woman everyone would agree he abused his power, but because he used a tazer instead its ok? Rediculous.

This guy didn’t even bother trying. He never even left a trot, just a little effort he would have easily had an arm on this gal, and I hope at 267 lbs could have subdued the little 100lber, given she was already in handcuffs, but nope..

This guy and his district need to be fiscally ruined, and fat ass lazy cops need to be fired.

cleared of any wrongdoing?

She resisted arrest and tried to escape.... that certainly makes them think you might be guilty

I am scared of allowing cops to do anything they want. And you know what, I should be scared and angry. Fear tells you you’re in danger. And our nation is in danger of becoming a police state, where people like you simply submit to your master rather than protest.

As for being clear, are your smoking something?
The people who cleared him are pigs too. Of course they cleared him. Pigs have been covering for pigs for a long time.
As for “fine officer”, I don’t thinks this guy ever ran anywhere but to crispycream.

How many police are just bullies with a badge?

He had her, she was in cuffs, how far could she get?

Too many cops see a taser as a toy.

You must want a police. Think about what you’re advocating. You are advocating for judge dredd. Ian that really them world you want your kids living in?

Slow down and compose yourself. Thank goodness you’re not a police officer having to make split second decisions on whether to beat, shoot or taze a person wanted on a felony warrant. I don’t know what “want a police” means, nor do I care what that “judge dredd” reference is.”Them world”?
I want my kids living in a world that doesn’t include out of control, drug addled idiots that have been conditioned to believe they aren’t resposible for their actions. This young person got a rude awakening for their continued bad judgement. The cop deserves a medal
