A Montara man walking two lapdogs off leash was hit with an electric-shock gun by a National Park Service ranger after allegedly giving a false name and trying to walk away, authorities said Monday. The park ranger encountered Gary Hesterberg with his two small dogs Sunday afternoon at Rancho Corral de Tierra, which was recently incorporated into the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, said Howard Levitt, a spokesman for the park service. Hesterberg, who said he didn't have identification with him, allegedly gave the ranger a false name, Levitt said. The ranger, who wasn't identified, asked Hesterberg to remain at...

Mumbo-Jumbo Mystic Impervious To Cops' Electric Blasters For those of you who've ever wondered, like you do, whether the Jedi lightsabre or the Taser is the more effective weapon, we're delighted to report that the electric dispenser of justice is no match for Obi-Wan Kenobi's mighty glowing tool. David A. Canterbury earlier this week went on the rampage at a Portland Toys R Us store, assaulting three customers with a plastic replica of the Jedi weapon. Cue swift intervention by law enforcement operatives, who found 33-year-old Canterbury wandering in the parking lot, "talking incoherently", and still swinging his Star Wars...

Ouch.. Some folks are calling this thing.. "...Remote crowd control of pain..." An Australian gun company 'Metal Storm' is working on it. "According to Wired, the weapons group is producing a 12-gauge shotgun called the MAUL that will accept several electrically charged cartridges and fire them up to 30 yards away in quick succession." "Taser founders Tom Smith told the guys at Wired his thoughts in development: "We developed the XREP to provide an extended range for situations where a close approach was dangerous or not possible.” Wired calls it a "remote crowd control of pain."

Dayton police "mistook" a mentally handicapped teenager's speech impediment for "disrespect," so they Tasered, pepper-sprayed and beat him and called for backup from "upward of 20 police officers" after the boy rode his bicycle home to ask his mother for help, the boy's mom says. Pamela Ford says her "mentally challenged/handicapped" son Jesse Kersey, 17, was riding his bike near his Dayton home when Officer Willie Hooper stopped him and tried to talk to him. The mom says that "Prior to the incident described below, defendant Hooper knew Jesse and was aware that Jesse was mentally challenged/handicapped and a minor...

VANCOUVER — The mother of Robert Dziekanski, the Polish immigrant who died after being Tasered multiple times by RCMP officers at Vancouver International Airport, said Friday she's "pleased" that the officers involved will face perjury charges. "The RCMP should not be investigating itself," she added. "Police officers are not above the law and I will await the verdict of the courts. I hope that justice will finally be achieved in the death of my son." Dziekanski, who spoke no English and had never been on a plane before, was unable to find his mother upon arriving at the airport. He...

WEST MICHIGAN — Muskegon County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Jeff Blackmer said he wishes the state legislature would holster attempts to allow stun guns under the state’s concealed weapons law. “I think it’s a bad thing,” said Blackmer, who has been a stun gun instructor for the sheriff’s office since 2009. “It’s bad enough to keep kids away from knives and firearms. “People might treat (stun guns) like toys and they’re dangerous. There is an awful lot of power,” he said. Stun guns — commonly referred to as Tasers, a brand name — are not legal in Michigan outside of law...

"Why as a Society are we allowing this to happen around the Nation? To show how mainstream and accepted this has become, watch this video of a Cop (with his partner assisting) who doesn’t like the actions of his Fantasy Football Teammate. Did you laugh? I didn’t either and I plan to contact DirecTV and demand they pull this offensive commercial. What about the Bud Light commercial where a fully equipped SWAT team secures the beer and pizza, but leaves the individual needing help stranded across the hall?"

If mine were truly a free country, US police wouldn't wield such immense power or employ such aggressive tactics against their own citizenry – a militarisation of our police forces that started with the war on drugs and intensified after 9/11. Consider: can you invent a realistic scenario wherein you shoot a man dead; justify it with a story witnesses contradict; confiscate any surveillance video; claim a "glitch" makes it impossible to show the video to anyone else – all while enjoying the support of state legal apparatus? Police in Las Vegas did that last month, after they shot Erik...

The BART Police Department will return Tasers to its officers, two months after suspending use of the stun guns to update department policies and retrain officers. "The policy was revised so there's only one way to carry a Taser, versus three," said BART spokesman Linton Johnson. Officers now must carry the stun guns on their "weak" — nondominant — side, or they can choose not to carry one altogether. This has always been an option, but all officers have been trained on how to use them, according to Johnson. The temporary suspension of Tasers went into effect mid-April of this...

Can the same zap that immobilizes a criminal brandishing a weapon be used on a manic moose or a gonzo grizzly? Spurred by the efforts of Fish and Game wildlife technician Larry Lewis of Soldotna, the use of Tasers on large animals is beginning to gain currency among wildlife managers across the U.S. -- and even overseas. "Since we've started this five years ago, it has garnered a lot of interest from other states and management agencies," said Lewis, who recently finished instructing the first group of state Division of Wildlife Conservation staffers on the use of Tasers in limited...

Considering objections from Lisa Nowak's victim, an Orlando judge Monday denied the former astronaut's request to terminate her probation for attacking a fellow military officer over a mutual love interest. According to documents from the Ninth Circuit Court, Nowak was eligible for termination once she reached the halfway mark of her one-year probation period. But the judge instead loosened her sentence to administrative probation, which does not require the Navy captain to report to a probation officer. Florida law says administrative probation is reserved for a defendant who "represents a low risk of harm to the community."

Valley law enforcement agencies this week modified their Taser policies, saying the devices can no longer be used to force compliance by people who do not pose an immediate threat. The change comes after an April 7 incident in which a Jackson police officer attempted to arrest a man and then used the Taser to stun him when he resisted. Jackson police had stopped Frank Meek because of an alleged license plate violation for which he had already been issued a citation. A video of Meek’s arrest showed officers ordering him out of his car. Meek got out briefly but...

The Lakeland Police Department ordered 150 of the devices, which are capable of stunning three people from the same device compared to the Scottsdale company’s earlier models that are single-shot devices. It represents the largest single order for the devices that debuted last summer, said Steve Tuttle, the company’s vice president of communications. “We’ve had others go out, particular for field studies, but nothing this large,” he said. Lakeland is a long-time customer of Taser (Nasdaq:TASR). The department...

Police need reasons to believe a suspect is dangerous before firing a Taser and can't use their stun gun simply because the person is disobeying orders or acting erratically, a federal appeals court in San Francisco ruled Monday. The decision by the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sets judicial standards for police and for people who claim they were victims of excessive force after police hit them with a Taser dart. "The objective facts must indicate that the suspect poses an immediate threat to the officer or a member of the public," Judge Kim Wardlaw said in the 3-0...

Pocket Tazer Stun Gun, a great gift for the wife. A guy who purchased his lovely wife a pocket Tazer for their anniversary submitted this: Last weekend I saw something at Larry's Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The occasion was our 15th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my wife Julie. What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse- sized tazer. The effects of the tazer were supposed to be short lived, with no long-term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety....?? WAY TOO COOL!
