After a third day of bloody protests over the burning of the Koran, there is a sense that America is lurching from one image crisis to the next in Afghanistan, with no clear path for U.S. officials to defuse the latest uproar.
President Barack Obama apologized on Thursday for the burning of copies of the Koran on a U.S. base in Afghanistan, an incident that has triggered far more outcry than another shocking incident: the emergence of a video last month showing Marines urinating on the corpses of what appear to be dead Taliban fighters.
Obama's apology over the Koran burning has been accompanied by other steps by the U.S. military meant to show remorse over what it sees as a tragic blunder. The Pentagon detailed new outreach to Muslim leaders, and the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan has promised training on the proper handling of religious materials as well as a swift investigation.
But analysts are doubtful more can be done to calm Afghans incensed by the destruction of Islam's holy book.
Instead, outrage in Afghanistan may have to simply run its course, leaving America to grapple with any fallout on its delicate campaign to foster reconciliation and forge a long-term security agreement with Afghanistan.
The Taliban has urged Afghans to target foreign military bases and kill Westerners in retaliation and, on Thursday, a man wearing an Afghan army uniform opened fire on two American servicemembers. NATO has declined to say if the shooting was connected to the protests.
President Hamid Karzai's office said on Thursday it wanted NATO to put on public trial those responsible.

An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last. And that's the man whose bust Obama returns to Britain, instead of actually learning something from the man and being spurred on to win what Obama himself termed the "war of necessity". (Believing the propaganda against Churchill is obviously more important.)
What this idiot doesn’t realize is that he may want to appease them but the American people refuse to do the same.
Counter Analysis: Who really gives a $hit....
do we even want to? i say FO!
It is not our war against Islam.
It is Islam’s war against us.
Start by penalizing Afghanistan a million dollars a day out of the billions we put in there, until the protesters are gone and charge them for all damages.
If they don't come through, then take military action against one of their units closest to Karzai - start by leveling one of their barracks.
These people only respond to strength and force. If we don't take tough action now the next time the radicals will do worse.
Pull out of Afghanistan now. It is a hell hole that is not worth another American life or another American dollar. And if in the future there is a real need to go back, then go back to do it right, from the air, and leave the place a land of green glass.
No apology, lets just burn the rest of them.
The Afghans have no respect or fear of the US. Yell, “GUN!” and open up on the crowd. If they still don’t respect us, they will damned sure fear us.
The United States Department of Apology and Genuflection.
This is the only apologizing we ought to be discussing.
No, the Mohammedans response to any effort to defuse their outrage will be more outrage. Mohammedans first response to anything is outrage. They do mellow out fairly quickly when faced with naked violence, however.
Forget the stupid books and the nonsense.
The CRIME is touching an American citizen or soldier.
The penalty should be swift.
I must be missing something here.
We free them from the beheadings and limb removals, put more money into their crappy country than we put into some of our own states, put their women and girls in school and stop the bearded ones from raping them randomly and then killing them for being raped, we install working plumbing for the first time in their history so they don’t have take a dump in holes in the ground, we enable them to have democratic elections and elect leaders instead of terrorist rulers who beat them into submission, we help them get accepted into the international community...and for that we get three days of crap and two dead for burning the very terrorist propaganda that we freed them from (not unblemished Korans as the media would have you believe). Where are all the democracy and peace-loving Afghans we have been hearing about? O yeah, right, they are busy screeching in the streets and killing those who put their lives on the line to save them from the Taliban crap, and that includes that jerk Karzai.
Screw this. Pull out the troops. Send in the bombers.
Afghanistan has a huge border with Iran. Obviously, Iran is infiltrating the country with provocateurs and terrorists. We need to cut off the head of the snake. Once done, our troubles in the Middle East are over.
Muslim = infantile outrage. Every time they throw a tantrum the world has to pay attention. Why not simply round up the rioters at night by snatching them out of their beds? This thing is being ginned up by the Taliban and our media are playing along.
Is this CIC really afraid that he’ll incite more Muslim anger? If it’s Thursday it must be Afghanistan. Friday is Egypt.
We should just create some paramilitaries and turn them loose on these enemies of America. Our money would go further and without spilling American blood. Let our Afghans kill their Afghans, repeat throughout Islamistan.
Although I suspect our government has its own kook farm; when the administration needs a diversion from the news headlines, they unleash a “person they have been monitoring” and give them a plastic bomb vest from Hasbro. So maybe we are not much better.
Analysis on how to defuse this? Really? The sky being blue is cause for jihad!
This may as well be the Borg..you don’t ‘reason’ with it..you destroy it. Utterly.
