Fed up with mounting legal bills and rattled by intense scrutiny of her family and work, Sarah Palin was ready to step down as Alaska's governor months before she left office in July 2009.
Emails released Thursday, most from the last 10 months of her time in office, show she told her husband in April, "I can't take it anymore" and complained to spokeswoman Sharon Leighow and aide Kris Perry in March that she had been the target of "many frivolous suits and charges since the DAY I became VP candidate."
"I can't afford this job," she wrote.
The emails illustrate what Palin has said all along: After running for vice president unsuccessfully with John McCain, she returned to Alaska to find that the financial and emotional drain of her gubernatorial job was too much. She flirted with a presidential run last year, but told supporters she instead was dedicating herself to "God, family and country." She currently serves as a commentator on Fox News.
In a March 19, 2009, email, Palin complained that more than 150 freedom of information requests had cost the state more than $1 million, adding: "and who knows what all the bogus ethics charges have cost the state."
She expressed anger at having to pay for her own defense, with a bill that at that point totaled more than $500,000, and said her husband had to go back to work on the North Slope to help deal with the growing costs.
"We've all had to pay for our OWN legal defense in this political bloodsport - it's horrendous - why do you think Todd is on the slope today?" Palin wrote. "I am paying to defend in my capacity as GOVERNOR - actions taken in my official position. This is unheard of anywhere else."

Maybe her move to quit was the best thing to do for her family, etc. but in the media environment, it was destructive—because it leans to the left and would give a “break” to a liberal in that situation but not to a conservative.
Scenario One:
Palin resigns as governor. Later she runs for President
and becomes the GOP nominee. The Dems bright out the following ad: “Sarah Palin. She says she’ll fight for you. But she quit. Quitters never win, Sarah...” Fair? Who knows, but you KNOW they’d do that.
Scenario Two:
Palin stays as governor and does her best to fight back.
GOP runs an ad for nominee Palin: “They tried to get her
but she fought back. The mainstream media tried their best but she’s a fighter—and she’ll fight for you as President.”
Scenario Three:
A lib/dem candidate resigns after pressure similar to what Sarah faces. He or she is praised by the media for doing what was best for his/her family. OR the same candidate
decides to stay in office and tough it out. They are praised by the media for being such a fighter. Regardless, the Dems get a pass. Double standard.
I could see myself voting for her based on positions, and I realize the Dems and the media had it out for her, but I’m just being honest: if she ran, they would hang this around her neck—”she quit”. Add to that the perception that she quit to make money with books and the lecture circuit. Even if she did make efforts to help conservative causes,
she will still be attacked for “going after the big bucks”.
Nobody said life is fair. For us it certainly isn’t.
This doesn’t surprise me. They were after her from the beginning, even before she became the VP nominee, and especially after.
I’ve never seen a public figure be treated as awfully as Sarah Palin by the establishment. They carved out new lows to try to ruin her, including the suggestion that she faked a pregnancy.
If she were a liberal woman and had aborted her Downs baby Trig, she would be heralded as a hero and celebrated as the model of a strong woman by the left. Disney would make an Erin Brokovich type movie about her.
Note two comments to the article. THIS is what conservatives have to put up with:

Oh that's NOT it? It could be liberal hatred and bias against conservatives? Kind of like the reason they covered for the creep John Edwards? And the woman killer - Kennedy - and the sexual harasser of young employees/interns - Clinton?
And yet, places like the New York Times and Washington Post wonder why they've lost credibility.
Playing favorites is obvious to all of us - - well, except the journalists... who couldn't find their noses if they wasn't attached ( or if they were conservative noses)

I suppose it is becasue we are focused on the battle at hand (the Republican Primaries), and FOR NOW, Sarah is not part of that.
Heat? Possibly going broke and losing her home with five kids just because some lefties don’t like her and are afraid of her? Are you on their side?
It doesn’t matter what Sarah Palin did or didn’t do. The media/enteratainment industry was and still is spitting mad that she lives and breathes. The LAST thing our masters want is to have Sarah Palin wake up the American spirit of freedom and individual liberty. They can not have that.
Sarah Palin could have sent emails saying that nothing they were doing was bothering her and they would have said she was too stupid to know when to quit.
They HATE her. They literally HATE her with every fiber of their ugly beings. She was and is a threat to their precious baby BamBam. And they of the (stop the bullying) campaigns will bully and belittle her and the Americans who think like her in order to destroy our constitution once and for all.
What happens if a Presidential candidate dies or must withdraw for some reason during a campaign? Does the spouse step in as has been done sometimes when a Senator dies while in office? That seems absurd. Or, does the VP candidate suddenly become the candidate? Or is there any sort of guideline for it at all? Just trying to think of any scenario that theoretically leads to a really great leader due to twists of fate.
In all your scenarios, it is the dominant CommunistMedia that is framing the perceptions, and laying out the ground rules.
As Conservatives we need to find a way to defeat that very difficult and fundamental problem.

What information I have tells me that she is, at this time, possibly the most vetted politician out there.
The left cannot let a woman and/or black Republican get elected president under any circumstances, and will destroy any who try... and not just politically. They'll go after their friends and family with a viciousness never before seen.

While they definitely fear Sarah Palin as a politican per se, it is really her potential for awakening American conservative values that has them utterly terrified. They saw those wildly entusiastic crowds at the tail-end of McLame’s campaign and they knew they weren’t mobilized for the deranged aisle-crossing RINO.

3: This explanation is pretty much what she stated in her resignation speech, but some did want to listen.
4: If this the state of politics in this nation now, lord help us.
Sarah will always be my President. I don't know that I'll ever be able to forgive the drivebys and leftists for what they did to this woman. Those of you who can forgive them are better Christians than I am.
I pray daily GOD would bless us with her in the WH at some point in time, although as a nation we tragically deserve the POS current occupant.

Since she is a private citizen, I think she should sue the AP for bazillions in cash for slandering her. She resigned her governorship a couple of years ago. We KNOW why the DBM keep attacking her, but she needs to get them in court and make them explain IN PUBLIC W-H-Y they keep attacking her!!

Your post makes it clear that you STILL don't fully comprehend the issue. Sarah didn't resign solely for HER benefit, she resigned because the frivolous lawsuits were being filed on almost a daily basis for MONTHS and they were taking not only resources AWAY from the state to accommodate them, they were taking HER time AWAY from her duties as governor.
I assume that you don't recognize real honor and real character when you see it. She didn't run away from a fight; she abandoned a losing situation that was detrimental FIRST to her obligations to her state and SECOND to her family's bank account.
Take a moment and try to honestly put yourself in her position and then say that she is NOT prepared to be president.
I see that many people here have forgotten that, as soon as McVain announced her as his VP, BHO unleased a cadre of 33 attorneys to go to Wasilla to try to dig up any dirt they could find on her. 33 attorneys!!!
The “dirt” they thought they found was nothing and was all explained. They tried bringing cases against her in court and lost . . . . . . . . . . . . EVERY SINGLE ONE!!!!!
They expected Palin to be in the thick of a primary race about now and it was intended to defeat her. Once again, they failed.
Yes, true, and I admire anybody who looks their mistakes in the eye and admits them. That takes character and guts, excellent values that if one doesn't exhibit all the time (me), one can at least strive to! Kudos to you.
The thing to do with mistakes is to learn from them, and then apply what you've learned. That's what I try to do with them, and it's kinda one of the things I like about Gingrich, having perused his election website. On Education alone, compared it to Santorum, Gingrich's position is one to inspire real optimism.
