SONOBUOY PING!

Photobucket

Click on pic for past Navair pings. Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist. The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation. This is a medium to low volume pinglist.

The hardware is impressive but I have some serious questions about the brass these days.

The steel is in decent shape but the brass is somewhat corroded.

“the brass is somewhat corroded”

Good ole bug juice and elbow grease will take care of that.

Old picture and impressive but the image is fading.

Yeah, all the media wants to show us now is two lesbians kissing on a pier.

Kitty Hawk's laid up and the Navy is smaller, weaker, and in the hands of an Enemy.

Au Contraire my good man. I see two boats in the picture as well as ships!

Enjoy the picture, because everyone on this thread will be working the rest of their lives to pay for it.

Each escort carries a whole bunch of missiles. Not much can get thru all the layered defenses. Most countries air forces would not even get close to even see the carrier.

They did. The helos are Navy and there is a flight of Hornets center position in front of the carrier. The Buff is accompanied by a flight of Eagles.

Seriously sweet!

Why is it that all the destroyers are trailing the carriers?

The short answer is because carriers sink destroyers when they run over them, so the safest place to be is astern of them. Smaller ships generally follow the 3-2-1 rule operating around carriers-no closer then 3000 yards ahead of a carrier, 2000 yards on the beam, 1000 yards astern. Especially during flight ops, when carriers are notorious for maneuvering to follow the wind and not signaling their movements to other ships.

This is a photo op formation though. Someone on a staff came up with it just to get some symmetry. It bears no resemblance to a real open ocean steaming formation.
